First I fell and tore my acl/mcl and fractured my knee cap. So I was not able to walk to do anything for several weeks. Now I am having foot problems. The Podiatrist gave me a post op loking shoe/boot and crutches and says I have to stay off my feet for another 4-6 weeks. How am I supposed to stay active and control my bs when I am so restricted? HELP!!!

Actually I had surgery on my knee last friday and am now cleared to resume exercising again! THANK YOU so much for all the helpful info and advice. My dr. was surprised that I had not had any weakness in my muscles and am recovering so quickly. I owe it all to y'all. Thank you. You are all such a blessing to me.

My usual approach is to find which body parts are working and exercise with those. I'm not being flip when I say this, it truly is something I've done.

When hospitalized for a heart attack in 2005, as soon as they let me off the monitors, I started dragging my IV pole up and down the corridors so I could keep my BG down because they couldn't accept that I wouldn't take insulin to make it easier for them to manage my BGs. Wrote a rather scathing letter to the hospital administrators when I got home. No response to it, but I did feel better.

When I was in for 3 days giving birth to my son (they did three day hospitalizations back in the dark ages—he is now 40), I started doing leg lifts to work on the jelly-belly before I could even get out of bed.

Thankfully, I haven't had too many of these situations, so now I practice on my wheelchair bound husband…poor dear…and get him to exercise without even really realizing that is what he is doing. Of course, with Alzheimer's that may be more him than my technique!

Thanks! I can't do anything that is weight bearing on my right leg or foot. I can't do anything that requires me to bend my knee either. But I will start doing what I can. I just got some large bands so I am going to try and do upper body exercises with them. Thanks for your help!

Good thought. Kettle ball, small weights, elastic bands, cords all can be used in a seated position on a hard armless chair or stool.

There are exercises you can do while seated. Dumbell curling, push ups, stretch band exercises. There may be more check out this here ~ ~ for starters. Google "seated exercises" for more
