Do you have a New Years Resolution?

Mine is to control my blood sugars better.

Also to get back on track with my diet and exercise.

I know it is going to be a battle but, this time, I'm really going to stick to it.

Are you willing to share yours?

Mine is to work more on my weight loss. I had been stuck for over a year and now am on the downward trend. I want to keep that going.

ConnieMarie 2012-12-29 08:26:08 -0600 Report

1) get my disability - i am waiting on hearing date
2) using that 3 yrs to work on total rehab of my right side (right now stressed about bills, just unable to focus and feeling like a loser)
3) drop 50 pounds maybe more - i've gained 80 since my strokes
4) take a class in organic gardening
5) use my gym membership everyday instead of 3 times a week
6) get off type 2 meds for good…
7) work on my balance so i can ride a bike again…
8) make 2013 count for something instead of the intense rehab of 2012..i've spent this year relearning to walk, talk, drive, write my name and tie my shoes.

b102009 2013-01-01 22:39:08 -0600 Report

I'm going through kinda the same thing. I'm disabled because of back hip and leg problems. I have been out of work for over 2 years (no income) I just recently got the approval letter from ssdi. I have also gained 60 lbs since becoming disabled and have been unable to loose any because I can't workout and my diet is horrible because i am very picky with food. And this weight gain has brought on my hypoglycimia / PrediabetesHypo

Sorry that was so long I'm new to this

Like you I want to accomplish the following in 2013.

*Get all of my disability stuff taken care of so that I can work on the bills that are stressing me out!

*Get my blood sugar under control and loose around 50lbs the healthy way not just yoyo dieting

* Volenteer at a pet shelter / vets to help the animals that need it

*Find some type of exercise program that my body can physically

*Research and get information on how it would be a safe way for me to have a child (because of my back pain and all the meds that I take I am unable to carry a pregnancy)

ConnieMarie, you have a lot to take in this year. Don't get frustrated if it doesn't come all at once. You've been through a lot.
No body is a loser, you've just had a challenge. I feel that you will do it if you put your mind to it.
You've done so much, coming back to learning how to walk, talk, drive, write and tie your shoes.
I know you will do it, I wish you luck, and that it comes easy for you.
Thank you for responding.

Happy New Year re1ndeer, I don't do the resolution thing. Why waste my time when I know I will break them immediately. Instead I set goals. This gives me something to achieve. My goal is to lower my A1c, find another job and with luck move out of the State of Maryland.

I want to continue to be healthy and fit and add new things to my arsenal to achieve that goal.

I don't make New Years resolutions. Most resolutions are pie in the sky and are usually broken adding stress and disappointment to an already bad situation (having diabetes). No sense in making a resolution that you will kick yourself when you break it. I just keep on doing what I need to do to survive and control my health issues.
Good luck with your resolutions and Godspeed.
Happy New Years.

The only thing I am going to do is try not to get too stressed out, instead of just sitting there boiling over I just might blow off if I feel the need!

Old-n-Grey-n-Wiser 2012-01-01 17:32:29 -0600 Report

Don't worry, you'll start feeling the ground shake!
I have a terrible temper, but learned to control it and put the energy to better use at a young age. A little over a year a family member lost theirs causing a year of hard feelings and more stress than my health could handle, now the pot is being stired again and I will no let it affect my health or any members of my my family living under my roof.

Just Joyce
Just Joyce 2012-01-03 13:37:32 -0600 Report

Tom the people with bad tempers and are angry with the world are usually angry with themselves. I use to be angry at the world and learned through therapy that I was angry with myself. The minute I realized this, I let go of the anger. I now hold people accountable for their actions. Family can be the worse when it comes to making people angry. My aunt was in the hospital with minutes to live when one of my cousins boyfriends started calling her names and was about to smack her. I got up, picked up his cane and told him I have three things to say to you, shut up, if you hit her I will put you in the hospital and sit down. He asked who I was. I told him I am the one person in this family your don't want to mess with. Then I told her, if you let him talk to you like that you and hit you, you need help. If he hits you call me. He never hit her again. A year later he had a brain tumor that nearly killed him.

Finally, after getting totally whacked out by something, ask yourself was it worth it. In most cases it wasn't. You can't control anyone but yourself and if people know they can rile you up, they will make a point of doing so. I choose my battles wisely and I fight to win. Good luck and find a positive way to blow off steam.

Old-n-Grey-n-Wiser 2012-01-03 14:34:06 -0600 Report

Joyce, I respectfully disagree, there comes a point when one has to blow off in order to put the person at fault in a place where they are going to have to realize that they can no longer go on as they have been, they can no longer hold others in fear with their temper tantrums, they must change or get out of my family members life. There are different kind of tempers, the one used to control and belittle people or like mine, very rarely seem, I can be mad enough to literally see black, but control it, but once in a while it will come out, I will do no one physical harm, but they will darn well know where I stand and am coming from.

Just Joyce
Just Joyce 2012-01-03 14:43:43 -0600 Report

Tom thanks for the clarification. I agree no one should be in fear of someones temper and if you put them in their place, go for it. Sometimes you have to do what you have to do.

re1ndeer 2011-12-31 20:24:45 -0600 Report

Great, we need people to not hold in their feelings. That's what makes most people sick. Everyone should vent their feelings whether they are good or bad. Thanks for responding.

pixsidust 2011-12-31 19:55:45 -0600 Report

Here is something I forgot…wonder why
I am dedicating my self to exercise daily of some kind
whether its the gym. biggest loser walking tape or my slim in six aerobic tape. I walk the dogs 4X a day with shorter walks in between and its just not enough. I only walk 4 blocks each time because of the weather and some people who let their pitbulls run loose. Certain directions are not safe

Just Joyce
Just Joyce 2012-01-03 13:39:53 -0600 Report

Pixi this is why I don't walk my dog. People with pittbulls have a habit of trying to test their dogs fighting ability. I have a 65lb dog and I can't control him if this happens. He gets his exercise in the yard.

Thank you for responding. At least you are moving, and not just being slack. Yes, weather is a big factor to most people(including me- talking snow for the next few days).
It's hard to go out when weather and other conditions make it unsafe.

I know, I have a feeling this is your year to do it. Good Luck.

Young1s 2011-12-30 20:52:05 -0600 Report

I said I'm not making one because it never turns out well for me. So I'm starting from the here and now. But in the coming year I will, as you mentioned, I will CONTINUE to control my BG's and exercise more. I will also, continue to live sober, tell my family how much I love and appreciate them more, get this chocolate cake monkey off my back (I don't even like chocolate cake that much), and continue to explore new ways to cook and live healthier, for my family and for my D health.

Caroltoo 2011-12-30 20:57:54 -0600 Report

Gee, I've not met the chocolate cake monkey … that sounds interesting.

My New Years resolutions are small compaired to some of the others. But, big to me…to keep my A1C down around 6.5 as it has been these past 3 months, Watch what I eat, stay on my diet and get to my goal or very close before 2013. To accept things as they are and not try to fight the system. Still remain positive and improve all that I've already worked on. Happy New Years to One and All. Valentine Lady

Diabrettic 2011-12-30 18:04:17 -0600 Report

1. Get my A1C down to 6.5.
2. Stay disciplined with diet and workouts.
3. Be more present in my relationships.
4. Finish my record!
5. Improve my guitar playing/practice more.

Caroltoo 2011-12-30 16:17:38 -0600 Report

My goal for 2012 is really to continue to do what I'm doing, but to get better at it!

1. Continue to control, and attempt to improve, my blood glucose levels by narrowing the range and possibly lowering the A1c further. Will need to start charting to verify this, since I am no longer using a meter that holds a record of the readings.

2. Continue to get 30-60 minutes of exercise daily and begin to vary the routines and/or activities so that I don't get so bored that I want to quit. Currently I am looking for a bicycle that fits me, so I can start riding and go further than I am willing to walk. The possibility of riding to Lanikai (one of the world's most beautiful beaches) is inspiring to me at the moment.

3. Continue to care for my husband through daily care and 1-3 excursions per week where he can see the outside world, get beyond our house, and get more stimulation.

4. Continue to eat in a healthy, organic manner, that will help maintain my BG control and lower cholesterol readings.

5. Decide whether I am retired, unemployed, or reimployable and make whatever adaptations I need to deal effectively with my financial planning. If retired, I need to sell my home (I'm living in my retirement investment). If unemployed, then do I want to more actively seek employment or revert to position #1 and adapt to retirement. If employed, plan and prepare for eventual loss of spouse's retirement income and be ready to make that next transition.

6. Do home repairs that will allow me to be ready to sell, if I decide that I need to.

7. Continue to connect with friends and expand my connections to new friends so that I build a more viable physical and emotional support system.

8. Continue to discover new interests and things that bring meaning into my life: being in natural beauty, being healthy, experiencing live music and drama, swimming more, contact with family and friends, new choices of restaurants, learning more about something new (maybe photography? a website for gluten-free, diabetic compatible recipes and ideas? learning about native artisan's crafts? or who knows what else will trigger my fancy!), and continuing to improve my capacity for happiness and joy!

Now, if this were all new it would be overwhelming and I would probably fail. Since it is tweeking what I am doing, I will succeed. Number 6 is one I need to step up the pace on. Number 8 will involve new things, but I will discover those as I go through the year. The real challenge in here is to keep expanding my interests and horizons!

re:#2 Do you know how to fit a bike? Do you know what type of bike you are looking for? One of the more important numbers to know is the stand-over height. Here'show to find that.
Find a helper, and put a verticle strip of masking tape on a wall. Wearing the shoes you will wear to ride, stand close to the wall, facing the room. Keep your feet approx 10" apart, mimicing placement on the pedals. Holding a book (about 1 1/2"thick) tight against your crotch, similar to sitting on the bike seat, have the other person make a mark on the tape where the book hits it. Do this 3 times, then measure the marks and average them. You want your bike (from the ground to top of top tube) to be 1" less than this.

My husband rebuilds bikes and sells them. I take it you are in Hawaii-not real practical for you to come and take a look at some here in Iowa.

Caroltoo 2012-01-02 02:20:22 -0600 Report

No, it would be a long bike ride, but I would probably lose weight! Seriously, thanks and size/height was actually a question I was considering taking to a speciality shop. You have saved me time. Thanks!
