I am addicted to benzodiazepine if any of you guys know what they are and I'm wondering if the drug abuse that I'm doing can affect or be the reason I'm a diabetic now? I'm having a really hard time coming off them n I don't think I can with out detox … I guess my question is can it affect my blood sugars? Haven't really noticed yet when I check.

Well said, James. Benzo and other chemicals do strain the body's ability to detoxify the drug though, so, as a stressor, it could amplify whatever BG highs and lows you are already having. I am voting with James on this one Melissa. I, too, hope you choose to detox and give your body a chance to recover from the benzo.

Howdy Melissa!

You are very brave coming out and sharing this information with us. Kudos to you!

To answer your Q regarding if this is a trigger for bringing on your diabetes, My answer is "I don't think so". I looked up side effects of benzo and I noted nothing which would indicate use or abuse would bring on diabetes. Here is an example: ~ http://www.benzodiazepines.cc/ or this one ~ http://web4health.info/it/bio-benzo-sideeffec... and this found in a search on "do benzodiaepines cause diabetes " ~ http://www.benzo.org.uk/vot.htm.

I believe the answer is "no it does not".

I would expect that if you have withdrawal symptoms you would have higher than normal BG levels due to the stress on your body and mind.

But it may be worth a few high readings to be rid of the monkey on your back.

I pray that your detox goes well and with few and easily overcome problems.

Christmas blessings to you and yours!
