My am bg was 139 today and I notice with the cold weather during the day my bg is also higher. Does anyone else experience this? Also depressive symptoms.

Yes!!! It happens to me so I asked the dr and was told that the weather does play with the numbers and that I would have to check them more often. He said one reason is because the cold slows our body down, may be a polite way of saying I'm getting older?, and that when it's cold most people stay inside and don't get the needed exercise to burn calories and make our insuline do it's job . He also said that the lack of being in the sun and fresh air let's that depressive feeling start to creep in and for me to make the effort to get outside for any reason to help with my issues.

I'm sure taking vitamin D can't hurt, and I do, but the dr said 30 min outside a day will do wonders. Being cold natured I said so what do you want me to do, sit in the sun in my sleeping bag? He said YES!

For some oddball reason mine is lower. My lowest is 69 and the highest is 107 but mostly in the range between 70 and 97. I guess it depends on our bodies, everybody is different.

I had noticed that just the past couple of weeks, as well, and wondered about it, as I am not doing anything differently than I had all summer except for wearing more clothes! And as I have gotten older, I have noticed that SAD sypmptoms are cropping more frequently, too. Isn't winter fun?!

Hi Jan! My endo says that it's often due to lack of vitamin D! Did you know more people are diagnosed with T1 during colder months and in colder regions of the world? Researchers are finding that vitamin D has a HUGE part in autoimmune diseases.

Lack of vitamin D can also cause depressive symptoms as many people develop seasonal affective disorder during winter months.

Try taking a vitamin D supplement or use a tanning bed :)

Hi LindseyLou, I will take more of my vitaminD3 as I have been only been taking a partial dose. I'll let you know if this works. I do have a SAD light. I love to tan but the derm says no.

That's a great number…congrats. Anything under 180 will give you an A1c in the 6's which is all you need. Don't try to aim lower or you'll risk low sugars and reactions where all kinds of bad stuff can happen…even depression if you're below 80 during the day.

I never noticed a change in blood sugar levels as far as the weather goes. I use the winter months to catch up on the books I have to read. I will see if it does this winter.

Caroltoo 2011-12-14 14:46:12 -0600 Report

SAD, seasonal affective disorder, is a form of depression brought on by lack of sunlight, perhaps related to lack of D3 also, but definitely lack of sunshine.

I spent a lot of years in therapy for depression, I try very hard not to be depressed. Even in the Winter months I bundle up and get out of the house. At work I would go out to get lunch or smoke. Maybe this is why I never noticed the difference in mood over the winter months.

I have never noticed this. I think it is because I have different interest for the winter months. I read more in the winter than summer, I put together jigsaw puzzles and I watch more tv during the winter. By March I am bored with all of this and anxious for spring to arrive. This winter right after the holidays I am going to spend time learning to make wire jewelry. Having something to occupy my time and developing new interest keeps me going.

I have a light therapy light for SAD and i definatley need more vitamin D3. Thank you Caroltoo!

pixsidust 2011-12-14 22:26:49 -0600 Report

I need that light! Do you like yours? What kind is it? How does it work?
Approximate price if you remember?

In the movie Fried Green Tomatoes Kathy Bates plays a woman going through change. Her husband comes home to her taking a sledge hammer to one of the interior walls. He looks at her and her response is "I need Light" It stuck with me because I immediately related!

Dealing with the cold and dark of winter is another form of stress.

Boy,you got that riight! now if I could just cruise away for a few months that might do it.

Have to admit that I haven't had SAD here in Hawaii for the last 20 years, but I did develop it the last two winters I lived in WA state where it was beautiful, but also dark, snowy, and cold. The land of sunshine, palm trees, and sparkling waters does it for me!!!!

Jan8 2011-12-14 16:52:35 -0600 Report

Wow! That's wonderful. What a beautiful place to live. It just sounds wonderful. Wish I could have the heart to leave my family. All my family lives here, but the happiness might be worth it.

I just posted some new pictures so you can see some of what I'm talking about. Take a look when you have time. Page 1 is mostly scenery, Page 2 is more personal—family, home, cat, etc.

Well, It's snowing like crazy here but I am pretending just for a moment that I am under a palm tree , very peaceful.

Caroltoo 2011-12-17 18:57:44 -0600 Report

Hold that nice warm thought, Jan. But you have to admit, fresh snow is beautiful. I know, picture fresh snow blanketing the warm Hawaiian beach! What a trip. The kids would love it.

Caroltoo 2011-12-14 17:00:00 -0600 Report

It was a good choice for us and has been a good life. It was hard to pick up and move. All of our families are the mainland also.
