…two turtle doves.

While these too were most likely part of the holiday feasting, the fact that in Medieval times turtle doves were also often given as gifts and kept as pets. They are a symbol of love.

In the rush of things during this time we forget that love is what it is all about. No matter the religious connotations or lack there of, the basic premiss of our traditional Christmas is love.

Now, it needs to start with you. Love yourself and you will have plenty to share. It is amazing how that works. And by loving yourself you can avoid the over indulgences of foods that get us into a bind. You can guide yourself away from the stresses and take some time to love yourself. No matter what ends up under the tree, you will be happy, because you first loved…YOU.

Out of your well being will pour all the love you want to embellish onto those around you. Share a quite moment with a special person, no gifts, no cards, just giving of yourself. It is the most wonderful gift you can give. You might even find that you can share it with strangers as well.

What are some ways that you love yourself and those around you?

Caring for my husband with Alzheimer's is an act of love.

Yes it is. I have seen how difficult it is on family to do that. I think it is easier for a stranger because they don't have the memory of how they used to be. Those memories are what make us able to push through. You are earning your wings.

Dr. Gary did a great article as well on keeping joy in your holiday. http://www.diabeticconnect.com/discussions/13861-joy-joy-joy It is great and offers a lot of great tips for keeping joy in the holiday season.

For me, what I do that shows love is take care of myself. I always feel better when I am doing that and feel much more confident in how I can share that with my family and friends. When I am not taking care of myself I don't feel like taking care of others either. So even though it might sound selfish, it really isn't.
