I just have to share this. I'm sooo happy!!!

I just had a check up with my GP doctor. We did a fasting glucose and checked my A1c.
2 months ago my A1c was 8.7, today it was 7.1 !!! I'm so very excited! I know I still have some work to do, but in just under 2 months, I have lost 15lbs and brought my A1c almost into normal range! I'm so excited.

All of you have been so supportive of my fears about my eyes that I just had to share the happy news also!

God Bless,

Good job Mickey, keep it up. I wish my A1c was as good, my last one went from 8.1 to 8.5. Considering my 1st A1c was off the charts I don't think mine is all that bad.

It's a hard thing to do? I found keeping a food journal and also writing my bs#'s in it to be a very valuable help! It showed me what was working for me, and what was not! If you don't journal, I would strongly suggest it, it's a great tool to have in the fight!
Thanks for the support! I wish you all the best in your fight! Let me know how you do!
God Bless,

Full speed ahead…!!

Mickey/CCHT 2011-12-08 23:59:30 -0600 Report

Yes, lets! As long as no one can see me! I used to love to dance, but I was a little younger, don't think I've got the moves anymore! At least not from what my teenager tells me!! LOL

jayabee52 2011-12-09 01:01:01 -0600 Report

well your daughter may not think you've "got the moves" because she doesn't dance the same way you used to. I love to dance and I do several styles of dancing. A few years ago I tried getting my 20-something sons interested in the style of dance I was learning (east coast swing). They came to a class, but didn't return. I did and went back nearly every class session for about 4 years, ( I was a slow learner LoL!) until the couple who taught it returned to Seattle area due to work.

I suspect you still got moves Mickey. Just that she doesn't see things that way.

Mickey/CCHT 2011-12-09 21:47:28 -0600 Report

I always thought swing dancing would be SO much fun! I couldn't jump around like the ones I seen dancing do, but it sure looked like fun! I thought it would be fun, also to learn ballroom dancing! It just looks so cool!!
Do you miss it? It was probably really good exercise for you!
As for me, I used to tear it up, but that was back in my younger, bar hopping days! I probably just thought I looked good!! AH the good ole days! NOT!! LOL

jayabee52 2011-12-09 23:28:30 -0600 Report

The Dance where they do the jumps and the flips is a version of East Coast swing called the Lindy Hop (or sometimes just "Lindy") I don't do the Lindy cause I don't have the balance to do that. (I am "balance challenged") I can barely do the East coast and some of the more complex patterns I don't do at all so I don't fall.

It was excellent exercise for me. There's a couple from the first dance class ("Dance Gig") which met on Sunday nights. Who since dance gig is no longer meeting have started a class on Monday nights called "Happy Feet". Dancing with Dance gig and with Happy feet really gave me an endorphin high. If I missed a class for the week my whole next week wasn't quite right.

Happy feet is on hiatus for the rest of the holiday season so I am not dancing at this time. But when a opportunity presents itself I will be out there doing the East Coast Swing. And YES i think I looked good too. The ladies I danced with sure liked dancing with me. Like I try to do on DC, I put a lot of myself into my dancing and learning new patterns.

I also do other styles of dancing too. But I will stop now because when I get talking about dancing I can "talk your leg off" and I don't think I should spend THAT much time talking about it on this board.

Mickey/CCHT 2011-12-11 03:23:01 -0600 Report

Your so funny! It is obvious you are passionate about dancing and love it very much. I don't mind reading what you are sharing! I like when you are telling me these things! You can "talk my leg off" any time!!
It does sound like good exercise and much fun. I work with an RN who also had D and she does belly dancing and loves it!! I'm thinking of looking into it, but with my big belly, I don't know if I will qualify!! LOL JK Will have to wait and see!

jayabee52 2011-12-12 17:27:56 -0600 Report

I hear if you do belly dancing you will lost the belly fat, so you'd qualify. If you have a belly of some type you'd qualify.

Caroltoo 2011-12-12 18:23:00 -0600 Report

Don't know about that James, I've sure seen a lot of belly dancers whose belly's also dance as they are not trim, but more Raphaelesque.

Caroltoo 2011-12-12 19:02:07 -0600 Report

We might, but in some cases it appears to perhaps be a cultural norm…we do have a very ethnically diverse population here in Hawaii from the tiny women who are less than size "0" to the Raphaelesque ones. What I do notice though, and am very pleased to see from the perspective of psychological health, is that most seem quite happy with themselves where ever they fall in the spectrum. At least, it is emotionally healthy, though many on the plus side of the scale do also have diabetes. D is very rampant in the Hawaiian community where so many seem to have accepted the worst the west has to offer in the way of food choices. (I've been here 20 years and I will never wrap my mind around why people enjoy SPAM. It was a WWII horror food.) Dr. Terry Shintani's recent study and recommendations focused on going back to the original inhabitants Hawaiian diet and removing things like Spam from the diet. The study was done at a hospital near where I worked and was amazingly successful in terms of reduced BG and weight.

jayabee52 2011-12-13 20:05:42 -0600 Report

I on occasion would eat it when there was nothing else available, but it was not my fave thing to eat. It was just so greasy and had so much salt too.

Caroltoo 2011-12-13 20:02:29 -0600 Report

Don't know, Mickey, but spam musubi is sooooo popular. My foster kids used to cook it and I'd have to leave the kitchen. The smell makes me gag.

Mickey/CCHT 2011-12-14 00:49:51 -0600 Report

I can just imagine! The thought of it makes me queasy, I can't imagine smelling it! I bet it smells as bad as it looks!! I will pass!

pixsidust 2011-12-09 00:42:45 -0600 Report

We can dance as little kids do and jump up and down in place
I don't care if you don't care

Mickey/CCHT 2011-12-09 21:48:25 -0600 Report

How did you know that's how I dance!?!? JK.
I would jump around with you, if you don't mind my jiggly parts! Just don't look!! LOL

Caroltoo 2011-12-08 16:57:01 -0600 Report

Wonderful, Mickey, especially with all the stress you have been under recently which could have driven it back up. 8.7 to 7.1 is gaining good ground…keep it up.

Mickey/CCHT 2011-12-09 00:02:36 -0600 Report

I know, right! Was a little concerned, but was optimistic! So glad it came back like it did, I was hoping for at least the 7 range, so I was pretty geeked!!

My last A1C was 3 months ago and came back at 5.7 .
Next one is Dec 13th 2011.
Wish me luck!

Mickey/CCHT 2011-12-08 16:08:43 -0600 Report

Good Luck! I like that 5.7, that is my next goal for the next checkup in 3months. Somewhere in the 5 range! Must have goals! Baby steps!!
Let me know how you do, I will be curious. I hope it comes back where you want it!

Zolar1 2011-12-08 20:54:40 -0600 Report

I had it lower at one time. As low as 5.1 before I stopped exercising and regained 70 pounds I lost. Sigh

Mickey/CCHT 2011-12-09 00:08:46 -0600 Report

Yeah, it's tough trying to lose weight and keep it off. But 5.7 is good.
Have you been working at getting it lower? I need to exercise and was planning on going to our gym, but with my daughter being sick, I just have not had a chance, plus money is a little tight. I have to go to the gym, I'm not one to go walking our neighborhood! I walk all day long at work, so I need some structured exercise. I will get there though, eventually!!! :)
Good luck on your battle. Keep me posted on how it's going for you. I'm going to friend request ya, hope we can be pals!
Blessings, Mickey

Yes you DID do It. I couldn't be happier for you. This is wonderful news after the past few days you've had. I can almost hear you squealing when you heard 15lbs. I'm sure that alone washed away some of the stress you've been under. And then on top of that, your A1c drops almost 2 points. Whoo boy. You make me wish I had an upcoming appointment too. I've seen a lot of good news like this today. You ALL are shining stars today. Proof positive that you get out of this what you put in it. Who's next? LOL God bless you Mickey.

Mickey/CCHT 2011-12-07 20:29:28 -0600 Report

Thank you so much!! I knew about the weight, I weigh myself once or twice a week at work. I've actually been stuck at 15lbs for a bit, but I know it will start coming off again, I think I'm at a platau.
The number I was really wandering about was my A1c, she was not happy with me 2months ago because it had gone from 8.4 to 8.7 AFTER she put me on glucophage! So I was very happy to show her that I was serious about this. But you know, all the hard work is fine and good, but you need the proof (#) to reflect it! She said she was very proud of me and wished some of her other patients would work on their numbers!!
I did tell her I was a little concerned with my everyday to day #'s which hover anywhere from the low 130's up into the 190's! She looked at my journal and said it looked like I was doing all the right things (mostly! She didn't see the day I ate the donut! Big mistake!) so she just tweaked my meds and added 1 20mg Amaryl at lunch time to see if helps support me alittle better. But all in all, I did good!!
Thank you for sharing in my happiness!!
Blessings, Mickey
