Fighting With Low Blood Sugar

My reading was 64 this morning, I had my breakfast, but after that was when I was starting to feel very weak. It would really start and stop pretty quick. But it was very bad, that I went back to bed and took a morning nap. After that I had my lunch. And I took my medicine after I ate my breakfast and lunch. How do you handle blood sugar moments like this, and what is the best thing for me to do to fight it if it happens again?

I used to have just a slice of cheese before going to bed, and guaranteed I fell very low by the morning. It simply was because I did not have enough to eat before I went to bed…being you felt weak after you ate breakfast, that part may be your body going even lower from so little to eat the night before—I have had that happen once in a great while. Not too long ago, I was nearing the end of my antibiotics for bad bronchitis, and my sugars skyrocketed when I was sick and on the medicine both. When I started feeling a lot better as far as the bronchitis went, my blood sugars PLUMMETED down . I woke up one morning, no fever—this was good, but I was in a low. I took my blood glucose—it was only 100, but I felt a lot lower than that—-I knew it would go down fast, so I ate lunch—I had gotten up at 11:00am. I took it again after I ate lunch, and it barely surpassed 119—it was 120, and it struggled to stay up there. Normally, when I do not have fevers , etc, right after lunch I'm at at LEAST 200. I learned something new then—-when I'm sick, my blood sugars say " Hey!!!! We are going to do darn well whatever we WANT to do!!!! "—-ha, ha. ANNE

Howdy Carrie. (continued from below)

The fact that what you had was cheese meant that because it had a good bit of protein in it, it digested slower. But eventually it got digested and it wasn't providing that slow, even, supply of glucose. And then your body needed glucose. But perhaps your BG hadn't fallen to the point where you would get the "Dawn phenemon" or liver dump.

But you were starting to get a low reaction as evidenced by starting to feel weak. But you probably had breakfast just in time to prevent a liver dump which would have elevated your glucose levels.

What to do? Have you been taking your BG readings just before bed?

I do the readings every morning.

doing the readings before bed too would give you an idea of where you were BG -wise when you started the night. I had dawn phenemenon early on in by walk with diabetes.

I asked my PCP about it and he said to take my BG just before bedtime. If I was below 130 I should eat a little snack, some protein and complex carbs so my BGs didn't go low in the night. When I did that, I had no more problems that way. Your situation is only different in that you don't have the liver dump in the morning, at least yet. Try doing that Carrie and see what your AM readings are like after doing something like that.

Howdy Carrie!
I am trying to get an idea of what happened with you this morning. When did this 64 occur? Was it your fasting BG reading or sometime else?

How long after getting up did this lower reading occur?

Yes, because all I had was cheese last night. One piece. No cake or anything. My mum comes in every morning to to check my bs, so it is around 6:15 or 6:30. I go back to sleep, but sometimes I will get up at 8:40 something. But this morning, I can't remember which 8 hour I got up in. I think it was 8:15… I had my breakfast, but after that was when I was feeling very weak. Although I wasn't tired, I did some things I needed to do on the computer. It was around 9 something, and I went back to bed, then took a nap. I am not a nap person. I woke up at 10:34, then had my lunch around 11:00.

so the 64 was your first reding of the morning, your "fasting" BG reading?

and if I read your post above correctly, The only thing you had was a little cheese? How much cheese?
