Mine is the serinity prayer

Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference…

I learned this when I first started to go to NA…I love it!!!

Angels are the makers of hope and wonder; the keepers of magic and dreams. "You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars…you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should." ~Desiderata~

When you wholeheartedly adopt a 'with all your heart' attitude and go out with the positive principle, you can do incredible things.

One that I love, from the song “Never Lose Your Sense of Wonder” says:

Go give a little piece to others
Take a piece for yourself
Never lose your sense of wonder
Even if you lose all else

I know the Song Amy, it wonderful. I love it. Everyone that responded had wonderful ideas. When you get in a hole it's hard to think of these things. It's so wonderful to have all of you. Yesterday, I pulled out all of my old albums and started playing them to see if they needed to be thrown out. I was surprised that even the scratched ones were good. It's all the old music but really made me want to sing out loud and dance around the room. I haven't done that in a long time. Keep up all the good ideas. They are great.

I LOVE this one and I'm sure I don't have it exactly right…
God wouldn't give me anything that he and I together can't handle.

caspersmama 2008-11-10 11:06:35 -0600 Report

Actually the whole thing is this " God will not give me anything that He does not think I can handle. I wish He did not trust me so much." I always liked that one.

sparkysmom 2008-11-10 11:25:25 -0600 Report

I like that one to but the picture my friend made me says.."God wouldn't give me anything that he and I together can't handle." She may have made it up but it iis the thought that counted. :)

One of my favorite quotes is
"Life is a coin. You can spend it anyway you choose but remember you only get to spend it once…"

Thinking of that makes me want to get the most out of each and every day that I get to be alive.

I will usually burn a great smelling candle, grab a good book and just chill. Or i play online games that relax and keep my mind occupied. and now for Christmas I am making ornaments out of segiuns and styrofoam balls. Very relaxing and time consuming. and of course I come to this site and read all the new posts and I get motivation from that knowing there are others with the same challenges and issues that I have.

When I am down and out, I take a few minutes off. I will grab a cup of coffee and go sit outside and listen to the birds or watch people walk and drive by. I listen to the wind, or watch it rain or snow. I concentrate on all the positive things around me. The beauty of the bird song, children palying and laughing. I also take time to reflect on the good things in my life. My friends, my dogs, my son, etc. I also find that music is a great pick me up. Sorry guys, not to sound feministic, but its usually songs like Feel Like a Woman, If I were A Rich Girl, songs with positive messages. Music is a good thing that makes you feel good. When your depressed, put on the music, play it loud, and sing!!!!

The very best thing I have found to get through tough days is to find something new to do such as a hobby. Pick something you have always wanted to do and make yourself do it. When you get started, you will enjoy the difference it makes. Also, when all else fails, reading a good book always helps me.

I love the quote that John shared. I think that is going up on my board. I have one too that I keep where I can see it all the time. It is just a fortune cookie paper, but it encourages me.

"You'll never know what you can do until you try."

What works for me is to Laugh and Smile.

Yep! Even if I don't feel like it. It is said that our body doesn't know the difference between a fake and genuine laugh, and the endorphins that are released can make you feel better. It sounds kind of goofy at first, but once you get into the habbit of it, it really does help.

Also, close your eyes for a few minutes in a quite place and smile. Just smile. You can think happy thoughts if you want, but just smiling makes you ward off some of the harder issues we face.

And if you are feeling lonely, stop in here and say hi to someone. Drop a friend an email and read a couple of positive discussions. Share a stupid joke...anything fun. That always helps pull me out of my dreary days.

One last thing is to stay away from negative people on days when you feel down. They will just pull you farther into a pit. They need company too. I know that is not always an easy thing to do, but negative people are just no fun. When you are feeling blue, that is a bad place to visit.

It doesn't last forever...there is always an end to it. So keep that in mind.

Thanks for that Gabby. I'm really going to try and take all your advice. It's really good. I do agree about the laughing and smiling. I finally stopped watching sad shows or romantic shows that made me feel so sad (I just separated after 20 years) because of a comment on this site. I started watching Reba at first (She's hilarious) and found such improvement that I started seeking out more shows like that. It has definitely put me in a better place. I'm not saying I'm always on top of the world but at least I'm participating in life again and am belly laughing! It's really helped bring me out of a horrible depression. It does work.

My son loves motivational quotes. One of his favorites hangs right above his bed. It is from the great Wayne Gretzky (one of the greatest hockey players ever), "You'll miss 100 percent of the shots you never take."

I love that quote because it applies to so much more than sports. If you're going to "score" or accomplish anything in life, you have to take your shot. If you let doubt, fear, or whatever, keep you from trying then you're guaranteed to fail. So jump in and live every day. Take your shots and never be afraid of failing. Keep trying and you'll find success.

That is great story, I have been diabetic since 40. so easy to get depressed feel like no one else has same problems

short1dr 2008-11-10 15:56:13 -0600 Report

That was awesome John. I also agree with Dennie. Sometime I feel so lonely in this mess. I say mess because that's the way I have felt for so long. Sometimes it seems no matter what I do, I fail to keep my sugars down. Sometimes I fail because I'm an emotional wreck and I will eat or drink something I know is really bad for me but it's like I can't stop myself. Or maybe I just keep sabotaging myself so I do fail. Either way I get scared to death that I'm going to end up having limbs cut off or worst, go blind. Sometimes I just get so overwhelmed by it all. Four days ago I did begin to track my blood sugars and everything I have been putting in my mouth. I also have made a point to make sure to take my insulin at least 30 minutes before I eat. I would always forget before and never did that except once in a blue moon. I have been doing really good. I have actually lost 5 1/2 lbs and have been getting great sugars. I started all this because of you guys. I guess it really does help to know there are others struggling too and that your not alone. Thank you so much.

Awesome! Way to go on taking charge and doing what's best for you.

I look at it this way, if you could give yourself a raise at work, wouldn't you do it? So think of all the money you will save in the long run by taking care of yourself now. It's like you just gave yourself a huge raise.
