I know this is not diabetes related per se, but I'm so excited that I HAVE to share this with my DC family!

Today my daughter and I were out Christmas shopping and we went to my favorite store, Family Christian Book Store. I wanted to get a cd, and get my friend a birthday gift. Which I did. At the register they had some specials and also a brochure with the picture of a young boy. Well in talking with the cashier (i talk to everyone!!) I found out this little boys birthday was tomorrow (12-1) and he was part of an organization called World Vision, and he was looking to be "adopted".

Well, guess what I did!! Yep, I adopted that little boy!!! YEAH!! I took one look at my daughter and she was like, oh yeah! So I signed up to sponsor this little guy! I'm so excited!

This organization does not just help him, they help the whole family, and the community. It sounds like a wonderful organization. I have always wanted to do this, but was always leery because of hearing all the bad things and the money not going to help the children. This is sponsored by quite a few christian artists, and that was all she wrote. The boys big dark eyes pulled me in! :)

And you want to know the crazy thing?! I almost didn't go! I was driving along and had forgotten that I wanted to go there, and almost passed the turn. I snapped to attention in just enough time to be able to pull over into the turn lane and turn. And that's how I know that the Lord's hand was in this. If I had missed the turn I would not have turned around, I would have just thought, oh well, and kept on going!
God is awesome and good. I love when the Lord is at work in my life and I'm able to do His will!!

Thank you for letting me share this wonderful news with all of you. It was important to me to share with my "family"! God Bless all of you.

I would add just one thing. Find out how much of your donation is going to the "cause" as opposed to being used for "administration". If at least 90% of your donation is not going to the "cause" I would look for another organization. Unfortunately there are organizations that prey on our desire to help people, especially kids.

I know what you are saying, that is why I did not do this way sooner. But 85% goes to the family. I have heard nothing but good things about World Vision since I have signed up and been sharing this. Many people have told me great things.
Plus the Hand of God was in on what happened that day. The Lord was guiding me and so I know in my heart that we are doing good!
And you are right, there are a lot of greedy nasty people who exploit the children they propose they are helping. That just makes me sick right to my soul. There will be a special place in Hell for those scum. You never hurt the children.
Sorry, got on my soapbox for a moment! I can't help it, i have a thing about children being harmed.
Have a blessed day! Mickey

When you answer Gods call to listen and act, these small acts of kindness happen. I sponsored a girl for years and watched her grow up in pictures
You generally can send them things that are flat. I sent ribbons and paper dolls. You may be able to send stickers a boy would like, ribbons to make colorful clothes or sell etc…Its a good thing to do. You're a sister after my own heart

I was told we could send stuff, so my daughter and I were talking what we could send him, his 5 brothers and 1 sister. Then we found out that it has to be in a small 6x9 in envelope! I'm going to end up sending tons of those!!! Well, depends on how much it costs to ship to Brazil!! Might be pricey!

I'm excited to get our first letter from him. It said it would be 2-4months! It will be worth the wait though! And the pics i will get! I'm excited! Will share with you when I get stuff! :
Peace my Friend, Mickey<3

Get international paper it is very thin and sturdy and cost less to send.

Send colorful cards and pictures. A colorful T shirt may fit. Walgreen's has plain colored ones for $3. Buy big. Planting seeds for that climate are also good. Give them food and flowers. A blow up beach ball, rope, twine, fishing line with hooks, socks, flip flops, dollar store rain ponchos are small and flat. I think it is rainy and tropical there. Even a plastic painting sheet ( dollar tree) that might be used to patch a roof, small sharp scissors or pocket knife, thread and needle pack.

Use babel fish to translate and write your letter in English and Portuguese in case the interpretation is off, one on top of the other.

The rewards of giving are immense!
As recompensas da doação são imensas!

Thank you so much for all the wonderful ideas!! They are great! I was going to get the envelope and walk around the dollar store and see what i could fit in one!! LOL
These are all wonderful ideas and will be put into play when the time comes!! Thank you so much for sharing this with me. Wait until I tell my daughter! She will be very excited too!

God Bless you my friend,
Love Mickey

Definetly. The little bit of info i was given stated that the parents both were in agriculture. Will have to find out what grows in Brazil and that will have to be in our first packet to them. I can't wait! :) Big Big Smile!!!!

That's awesome! I know what you mean - I, too, am leary of sending off money to help a child and wonder whether you are acutally helping or just lining someone's pockets…Congratulations! And a very merry, blessed holiday season.

That is what held me back for so long not knowing. But the more I talk with people about this, the more positive things I hear on organization. And when the Lord has his hand in what you are doing, you know you can't go wrong!
I hope you have a blessed holiday also! Thanks for posting! Hope to "see" you around!!

We know the Lord always works in mysterious ways. And you just proved that. Yes, God is good…everday and all day. I am happy for you. I hope that you are able to make a real difference in his life. Be blessed.

P.S. I kind of got that impression about you, as far as talking to everyone is concerned. You seem like the type that would befriend the world if you could. And there's nothing wrong about that.

God is good for sure! Thank you so much for the kind words. And I am guilty of talking with everyone, if they want, some just look at you like your crazy!! LOL I just want everyone to get along!

From what I've heard of World Vision, and pastor's families do hear the inside on some of this stuff, it is very reputable.

I've often thought of it myself, but always worried I wouldn't be able to stay with it longterm. My solution was to take in 8 foster kids over the last 20 years because the financial commitment and timeframe was different, though the love commitment doesn't end.

Yes, big soulful dark eyes are hard to walk away from. Good choice! I'm glad your daughter was a part of the decision too. Says something about what she learned from mom.

Glad you have heard good things also(pastor's family?). I'm so excited!
The cashier told me she also is apart of this, she has a little girl. She told me when she had a rough patch awhile back, she called them and they took over the monthly donation for her for a few months until she was back on her feet. I thought that was pretty cool!
I think taking in foster kids is a wonderful thing. Not to be taken lightly. I kicked that idea around, but with my job and my health, it would not be a good fit at this time. But this I can do! We seen a picture of a little girl and we wanted to adopt her too, she was from Lebannon! I told my daughter we had to wait and see how it goes before we can add another! But i had a hard time walking away from those eyes! So I help her brochure and said a little prayer for her, hoping someone will come along soon for her! So many children suffering. It breaks my heart.

My husband is an ordained minister (since 1945) as well as a clinical psychologist. Obviously, he's not pastoring now, but did for 50 years.

That is wonderful. I can't wait to get to be able to meet him one day when we are all home with the Lord! We will be able to talk and hang out with out having to use a keyboard!! AWESOME:)
