I HATE that insulin makes you gain weight.....

started taking better care of me and doing my insulin like I should…and have gained almost 20lbs…and haven't eaten a whole lot with working 2 jobs. Benn doing rice and veges for lunches…man oh man…how disappointing. I mean if I don't do insulin I ruin my body but loose weight…if I do my insulin like I should I gain weight.!!!! Like I don't have enuf stress and tons and tons of worry in my life now my weight is once again a big issue!!!!!!

You know, I am in the sae boat. I take meds and boy have I put on the weight. I was advised that perhaps later I will have to take the insulin instead of meds, I thought o boy now I can loose some weight. Wrong insulin does put on weight, I have finally adjusted to the fact that I am going to gain weight and my goal is to loose weight and not to gain. So far I have not gained but stay the same, I eat less and walk more or do housework or anything that will keep my body moving. Do not stress, just take in stride and find ways to not gain, it can be done and you will do it. Good luck to you.

You are so right. On top of everything else, the medication we need is also hurting us. I finally got off of the Insulin about a month ago. I had to change the order that I was taking my oral meds and pay closer attention to my diet; so far so good. I've tried the DASH DIET with some success. It can be found at dashdiet.com Blessings

Good Morning, just read your comment and I THANK you. Had severe pain for the last four days and had to to do the dreaded thing; "take prednisone" because nothing else was working. B S jumped to 162 from 85. Took most of the day to get it back under control without the Insulin, but I did it. So far so good. Blessings

I totally get the dilemma here that is building and so many of us know how frustrating it is. Times are tough. Many of us work multiple jobs and raise kids or take care of family. Then we try to juggle diabetes into the mix along with other health issues. The thing is that you are not alone in this.

Your expression of frustration was posted and people here are trying to help give you ideas on how to make it better not worse. I know when you are overwhelmed, seeing things in a positive light can be hard, but that is all the members here are doing is trying to help.

So maybe just take one of the ideas and give it a try. You might have to do it several times to make it work and you might have to ask for help. But at least give it a try.

Are your numbers in a good range on insulin? If they are, then that is one thing you don't have to worry about so much. But if you meet every suggestion with an "I can't do that", then there will just be a continued frustration for you. Insulin is not your enemy. It is your friend. You just have to learn how it plays and that may mean changing some things in your schedule.

When I get that trapped feeling, I sit down and write down every single bit of my day. In half hour increments. All 24 hours of it. Then I fill in my schedule and I find that I actually do have time to do things for myself. Like take a 15 minute walk or make a salad instead of a quick cracker and cheese snack.

We are not making suggestions to you to make you feel bad. Just giving you some insights to what has worked for many of us in the same boat.

I am so sorry you are having such a difficult time right now. I will pray for you that a change for the better comes for you. Try to understand that while some of the posts that you have received may seem a bit hard to take, it is only peoples opinions not fact. And I want to beleive that we all are trying to respond to you from a place of wanting to help. Please take a moment and reread some of the posts because there are some really good ideas for what you can do, in respects to you eating choices. Don't get discouraged. It takes time for sure. And if you look thru these posts, you will see some good advice that might help. And girl, I know of what you speak of about working long hours. I'm a dialysis tech and some days I'm running 14 to 16 hour days. I get home, the last thing I want to do is exercise! It's like, what have I been doing all day but running around!! I'm going to make time for it though. I haven't yet, been trying to figure out what is wrong with my sick kid. But I will be doing something here soon, because I want it just that bad! Just not on the days I have been running for 15hours!

I am a T1 Diabetic so I'm of course on insulin…I've definitely NOT gained weight! I'm 5'6" and just barely 120 lbs. My theory why some people gain weight is a) they take too much insulin and need to bring sugar up fast with candy/sugar/cake/whatever and b) they are not eating the right kind of carbs and are gaining weight from those (not the insulin.)

Rice is OK sometimes, but there's better ways to get carbs.

Try getting whole GRAIN bread. I say grain because whole wheat is not the same thing. Whole Grain breads are high in fiber so they digest slower and will not spike your sugar. Try it with a slice of cheese and meat for protein or maybe some lettuce and tomato. Even some peanut butter and a banana is good! I try and stay away from jelly because it's not a good way to get fruit. I buy a Sara Lee brand and each slice is just 6 carbs :)

Also, hard boiled eggs are a great snack for high protein and low carb!

Broccoli is one of the best veggies for us diabetics - high in fiber AND protein! I don't even bolus for it sometimes! I heat it up with a small bit of butter and some cheese sprinkled on it.

Try to eat spinach instead of an iceberg mix or a caesar salad blend. Spinach has a lot of important vitamins and minerals as well as fiber while light lettuces are basically crunchy water.

Hope I helped! I'm a poor college student so I afford things by clipping coupons and buying produce at farmer's markets. I KNOW how discouraging this disease is, just keep your head up! :)

I am really impressed with your knowledge of nutritiion. I teach nutritition and
could not have said it better mysellf. I do the same things as you and do not gain
on insulin and can even lose weight. People are told to take enough insulin to
cover the carbs they eat. I decide what is a balanced diet for me, including much fiber and only slow digesting carb. Then I take only enough insulin to cover that

That is some good advice in there. There are ways to make small changes for the better without having to break the bank. Tuna fish is not that much and has lots of protein and little carbs. Eggs are a good one also, like you said. I like baby spinach instead of iceberg which has no nutrional value!

The right meal plan will help, counter balance any side affects of Insulin. Of course you were told that but you can still take charge to lose the weight. Its our nature to offer help and solutions. Its meant with care and with love. Truth with Love.

Eggs are cheap. I love mine with onions cut up in them. Cabbage is cheap. Chicken leg quarters 49 cents a pound! I am broke as all get out but find if I cut out buying my meals out, remove the junk, eat spinach etc…I can do it. A meal could be string cheese with an apple. I also took care of my grandparents when they were alive.

I know you are upset that we do not want you to place blame without taking the responsibility for your health. It seems there is no understanding and compassion. Yet there is… What you are doing is not the path or the way. No one needs to know you intimately for that.

You are tired and do not have the time for yourself. Yet thats just what you must do. You help your parents and they are helping you. I am sure it would be much harder if you had to be alone with your child. I lived at my grandparents when my son was little. They watched him while I worked after school. I paid some bills and they paid some bills. SSI, and Medicare really took care of the main bills. My money was groceries and for the odds and ends. Is there the possibility of child support? I made the mistake of not getting that when my son was a child. Can any of you get an EBT card? Too much money, then its not all bad, just feels like too much for your shoulders.

In the end, its about you. We have heard the why can'ts and while you keep with that philosophy, hope of Better will pass you by. You have to find Why You Can. How can you spend the money from One or two SSI checks better, plus that of two jobs? How can you shop in a way that allows for healthy eating and pack lunches and snacks with you to work. How can you find ways to exercise and move. I took the stairs, my coworkers walked around the perimeters of the parking lot round and round.

Making a plan for success will make you feel good.
Find the I can do attitude that will set an example for your child and ultimately save you. Save yourself. Decide today. I look forward to being your cheering squad! Love to you and many Hugs. I believe in you and I know you can!

Hey girl, Take a deep breath and just relax. You can always vent here just take it with a grain of salt!! Everyone's entitled to their own opinion ;) I know exactly how you feel…I worked 2 jobs and raise my now 14 year old grandson and put up with my lazy 36 year old son and support everyone myself. I was a cook for 25+ years. And as you can see by my pic I'm pretty "Fluffy" too!! But let me tell you…you REALLY need to get control of your sugar one way or another!!! Don't let it come and bite you in the ass one day and end up in the hospital like me!!! It's NOT pleasant!! BECAUSE my #'s were uncontrolled I have a TON of "Complications" just because of the Diabetes!!! I thought I could wait I thought it would get better…it didn't!! I had my Gall Bladder out…Pancreatitus 7 times…(More painful than childbirth)…problems with the pancreas… scar tissue building up in the palms of my hands…(will need surgery to correct or will lose the use of the pinky and ring finger)…Neuropathy starting in my big toes…feet hurt ALL the time…shots 3-4 times a day…1 at nite. My Blood pressure Meds and my insulin ALL fight against me losing weight…so I know eaxctly what you mean…all I mean is take this very seriously!!! And even though not everyone is going to be polite on here with you it is only to motivate you to take care of yourself!! Please know that!! Don't give up the fight O.K.??? Do you have Insurance?? If so get yourself a good nutritionist maybe you could work together to find something that works for you? Just get ahold of it soon don't let it get you!! Your friend, Ellen :)

You don't have to gain weight on insulin. I am able to lose weight on insulin.
What kind of insulin are you taking, long acting or short acting? Do you also
take , medications? We are told to test our blood and take enough insulin
to cover the carbs eaten. That is really not correct. It makes more sense
to design for our selves a healthy, well balanced diet that has only high fiber slow digesting carbs. (Rice is not good as it is low in fiber and digest quickly)
Take just enough insulin to cover that. An example of a meal would be 1/4 cup cooked whole barley, a large amount of any of the following: broccoli, mushrooms, cabbage, green beans, celery, onions etc. a few ounces of meat, chicken, beef etc. Peas and corn can also be used in a smaller amounts. Do not try to go no fat as you will get hungry and end up eating more. Do not eat bread
along with another carb like the barley. if you have a desk job, try to walk at least 10 minutes after lunch.

Malissa: I think it might be possible that you are not eating ENOUGH calories and so your body has gone into starvation mode and is packing on the weight.
Follow the advice of the responder who said to find your caloric needs and then look at your diet. White rice is a nutritional wasteland; consider switching to brown rice, barley, quinoa, farro, one of the "ancient grains" if possible.
Some things I like to keep on hand for quick eats are string cheese, peanut butter on apples, nuts and raisins (watch portions here). Greek yogurt with fruit is a great meal, also.
You can cook up a pot of brown rice and broil some chicken breasts a few times a week and add salads or frozen vegetables to make a quick meal you can have when you get home for dinner.

I'm not on insulin, so i cannot comment on that, but I am a big girl and have been fighting my weight my whole life.

I have adapted a lifestyle change and have lost 15 lbs. in about a month and a half.
I cut out the simple carbs(white rice) and eat more complex carbs and make sure i get enough proteins. Tuna fish and egg salad are easy to take to work. I'm a dialysis tech and I work crazy hours and long days. I am unable to eat 6 small meals, there is NO way! I can barely get in 3 if I'm lucky!

It is just going to take time to find out what works for you. Keeping a food journal has helped me alot. I also record my bs #'s in it.

I hope you find a way to work this out. You can change your diet without breaking the bank. I'm on a budget also, but I have made concessions to be able to eat healthy for myself and my daughter. It is just not negotiable.

You don't need to eat six meals a day. I eat three and a snack after I exercise.
The reason I think they want you to eat 6 meals as they recommend way too much carbohydrate and they want it to be spread out over the day. They don't
distinguish between fast and slow digesting carbohydrates. This makes a huge difference. I eat only 100% whole grain, slow digesting carbohydrates, I also eat full fat cheese, and salad dressing.
They tell you to cut the fat, but the only way to cut fat is to inrease carbs. Every food that is lower in fat is higher carbs. Fat makes you feel full,
does not raise blood glucose at all, keeps you full until the next meal. Fat acturally slows the digestion of the whole meal that it is mixed with. I am
prone to weight gain. Since I stopped the fat free nonsence, I don't have
as much difficulty keeping my weight down as I don't get hungry. Also my hair and skin is not so dry now.

Good deal. I was just saying that in passing about the 6meal's thing because I keep hearing about it. And I don't do the fat free stuff either. It's gross! I do do lite things though. Like Miracle Whip lite is cool and the ranch we use is lite. The cheese blocks I buy are the 30% less fat ones. I figure if it does not change the taste I will go with the lite to be able to enjoy the full fat things on other stuff. It is all about what works for you, you know? I only eat whole grain bread and pasta for when I make spaghetti. It's my daughters fav, and she actually doesn't complain about it being whole grain pasta. And it doesn't spike me, so it's cool. I guess I don't agree with your basic premise…insulin doesn't cause you to gain weight…only if you're taking a lot of insulin and eating the carbs up to that level…and thus more calories. I've been on insulin a very long time, and losing/maintaining weight is relatively easy. You just have to eliminate carbs. You will find that you'll have to reduce your insulin to balance it out. It's simple, whenever you do eat, don't eat carbs. You just have to snack/eat on protein and fat. (and don't minimize the fat)…This will leave you satiated. I believe that reducing carbs is the key to better blood sugar levels and to achieving and maintaining a healthy weight. How many carbs are you now eating per day? I would suggest that you need to reduce your current carb intake. That means counting the carbs in everything that you eat. The fewer carbs you eat, the less insulin you'll ultimately need. Most days my lunch consists of an apple, sliced and slathered with all natural peanut butter. A medium sized apple has about 25 grams of carb and 4 tablespoons of all natural (just peanuts and salt) peanut butter has 12 grams of carb so my lunch has a total of 37 grams of carb. I try to limit my carb intake to no more than 120 grams per day. By reducing your carb intake, the pounds will drop off. Exercise also helps as others here have noted. Exercise increases your insulin sensitivity and enables your body to better metabolize the food you eat. A low carb diet is not an easy one; I avoid breads, pastries, cereals, rice, potatoes…most any white-colored food. I eat lots of salads for dinner and snack on almonds. Wishing you the strength to make the right choices.

well its ur choice… the jobs or ur health… who has the time to excercise all day..? who said u should? … ask someone else to do it for u then… and c where u end up… do u think they call this thing 'dia..beast' for joke..? keep up that attitude and i'll come visit u in the hospital or maybe worse! i can sing.. so i could do one of the tributes… and i'm not adding any smiley face here either cause this is not a disease u joke around with.. many of the things u say u cant afford or find the time for u can …if u love ursel u will find the time… bet u would if i invited u to go shopping!! I work in a high profile job full of challenges everyday and am on call 24/7.. even this evening I have to work… but no one.. no matter how much money I'm being paid is going to deny me of the time I need rto excercise.. and I do not go to a gym.. it is very costly here and does not fit into my unpredictable schedule… but I do it everyday if even for half an hour.. need I say more..?

Every diabetic is different that is why we all need to get an individual meal plan with the help of a dietician or endrocrynologists. Some diabetics are only allowed 3 meals a day and no snacks, some are encouraged to eat 6 small meals etc. Co ordinating efforts with the help of your health care professional should benefit you and help to keep the weight gain down.

Make sure you eat six meals a day vs less. Cut the rice if that carb is working against you (sounds like it is) and replace it with a protein like chicken, egg or even beef. As Gabby said Get moving. My grandfather became Diabetic in his 50's, started on oral medication and eventually went to insulin. He lost over 150 pounds and never put it back on. Take the stairs at work. I would go up and down ours at work until I did 30 flights a couple times a day. You are too young. Make yourself your mission. Remember only you can give yourself the Carbs that turn to fat. Not all veggies are the same Carb wise either. Now that you know, you can take responsibility and plan your success. No longer lay blame on the insulin, because you need to rise above, and you need to learn to live. Live! Live Well!

The reason insulin makes people gain weight is that it is doing what it is supposed to do, put the glucose into our muscles and out of our blood. However, if our muscles are not using the glucose they are getting, it will be turned into fat. So that is one reason that exercise is so very important. It will use that glucose up and will allow your body to loose weight.

You probably feel better and a lot of times that translates into looking better as well. We get our energy back, we are eating better usually and doing the things our body needs. So I totally understand why they say you are looking better, because you are.

I hate it that insulin does that to me too!

But I was taking so little insulin (17 U AM and 15U PM) that I could manage my BG levels simply with a very restricted meal plan. No bread of any kind, no rice of any kind no potatoes of any kind or corn or products from corn.

So I discontunued using insulin (with my Dr's knowledge).

You may be on a larger dose of insulin and it may not be possible to completely discontinue insulin, but if you eat 3 meals a day and restrict the number of carbs at every meal — (like Rice) —- you may find your BG levels going down and perhaps your need for insulin may trend lower and you may need to inject less.

Less insulin injected = less fat gained?

When I went on my low carb/ high protein menu plan I lost to date about 50 lbs after being on it for about 10 mos.

I wonder if this might work for you?

I am on social security. If your parents are on SSI, only they qualify for food
stamps, help with heat, their perscriptions, help with medicare payments. perhaps more. I am on Social Security and SSI is far less money.

It seems impossible and overwelming but you can make changes. They don't have to be instant everything. Start slowly. Find foods that are good for you and easy to eat. A lot of people have issues with carbs but there are some good carbs that you may be able to eat. If you like rice try brown rice instead of white or barley. I never used to eat yogurt very much until I tried the Chobani greek yogurt. It has a lot of protien and taste really good. If you like chips and salsa try tostitos whole grain artisan fire rosted chipotle with salsa. It's looking for foods that will work for you and won't send your sugars up and help you lose weight. You just have to find what works for you. Try a few things at a time. Be careful with your portions. You can find out what your calorie intake should be by going to a body mass index site. Some will tell you what amount of calories you should be able to have to maintain your weight and then lower you calorie intake based on that. Some will recommend a calorie intake for you to lose weight. You have to make time for yourself to do this because it can be life or death. Get the people around you to help you. You may be suprised at what they will be willing to do for you. Good luck.

That is a tough one! Personally, I had to quit the rice, but I'm not on insulin and don't have that complication. I can only empathize and hope you work it out.
