My BG is great with a whopping 127. I followed my plan except instead of eating a sliver of pumpkin pie I ate 2 slivers with some whip cream on top. Yes, I feel guilty, but not really guilty. I did okay, how about you?

No, I didn't have a plan, I ate everything. We had turkey, dressing, collards, potatoe salad, broccolli casserole, mac & cheese, giblet gravy, ribs, sweet potatoe pies, cakes, strawberry pretzel salad ( the only thing I made with equal) cognac, beer and wine. Yes, i know this sounds bad but with things the way they are this is sometimes my greatest pleasure. I know this not what I'm supposed to do but I truly believe that God has already destined how long I'll be on this earth. I haven't always had a relaationship with God, always in church but no real relationship. I'm not depressed, most people who know me will say I'm one of the most up-beat people they know. My mom died at 49, shen I was 12 and I always had the fear that I would die young. I'm 61 now and I love my life and family but none of us came here to stay. I hope I don't sound morbid (that's not my intention). The pic of the little lady to the right was 90 when she passed last month, I couldn't have love her more if she had been my biological mom, I praise God for placing her in my life, I thank him that things are as well as they are. I love my church-family, my pastor and the fact that I a Heavenly Father that has my back. I'm so glad I don't get caught up in the hustle and bustle of the holidays, I concentrate on those less fortunate and give to charities. I heard someone say that most of the people we know already have to much. Sorry this is so long but I just feel like saying I'm gratful no matter what. I love the song Be Grateful, God has not promise me sunshine, that's not the way it's going to be but a little rain, a little pain makes me appreciate the sunshine. Love to all of you.

What is strawberry pretzel salad? I would love to know, it sounds like it could be very yummy!

swanslake54 2011-11-30 12:24:00 -0600 Report

2 c. crushed pretzel sticks
3/4 c. melted butter
3 tbsp. sugar
8 oz. cream cheese
1 c. sugar
8 oz. Cool Whip
1 (6 oz.) pkg. strawberry banana Jello
2 c. boiling water
2 (10 oz.) pkgs. frozen strawberries, partially thawed

Mix first three ingredients and press in bottom of a 9"x13" pan. Bake at 350 degrees (metal pan) or 325 degrees (glass pan) 8 minutes. Let cool completely. Beat 1 cup sugar and cream cheese. Fold in Cool Whip. Spread over pretzels. Mix Jello and water until dissolved. Add strawberries. Stir into Jello, then set aside for 10 minutes. Pour over cheese mixture. Chill.
I used equal instead of sugar, I've also used prepared graham cracker crusrt and lite cool whip. The frozen berries helps the jello set pretty quick, enjoy.

Thank you Carolyn!
Please post this in the recipes section (Link to the left) so more people may be able to find and enjoy it and it won't get "lost" as the discussion gets longer. Please?

I think you have a beautiful aspect on your life. It's not morbid at all. I was raised in church and even though I don't actively go right now, I still keep my faith close to my heart. I pray on a regular basis and have three songs that keep me reminded of His love and power (Oh The Blood, Great Is Your Grace & Yes Lord). I am like you in that I trully beleive that my life has already been mapped out in God's plan. I walk in a path of trials and tribulations that have sculpted me into who I am today, but I am ever changing. Everything that has happened in my life has happened for a reason, known or unknown; even diabetes. But I walk in faith and pray that when my time does come, I am welcomed home with open arms. God bless you.

Why should you feel guilty? What's the big deal especially with your numbers. Two slivers now and then will satisfy your cravings and keep you on track.
I followed my game plan of eating everything on the table (all the Italian and traditional American foods including desserts along with a little wine and beer). I just tested a few more times than usual and used extra Novolog to compensate for approaching highs. I survived and enjoyed the day. I plan the same for Christmas Day and New Years Eve too.

I envy your being able to eat that way! I have battled a weight problem since the late 1990s, and I am now only 8 pounds above my ideal weight. If I overeat and use extra insulin, I gain weight very easily. I keep my daily carb intake to 130-150, even on holidays. That works well for me. Enjoy the holidays!!

Richard; I too have a weight problem and keep my carbs around 75 to 100 to be able to loose. My eating plan is so low on carbs and calories that it was a big ooop's for me to eat 2 slivers of pumpkin pie with whipped topping. But, I was
happy and that was great. I mean what is Thanksgiving without pumpkin pie…Hugs…Valentine Lady LOL

GabbyPA 2011-11-29 13:33:27 -0600 Report

I make mine without the crust and that reduces the carbs even more. I pour them into little tart cups and there you have a single serving just ready for a dab of whipped cream. YUM

Dear Gabby: Your idea sounds wonderful !!! Can you freeze them and take 1 or 2 out at a time? I don't see why not but it's your recipe and you would know best. I would love to make a batch, but could only eat 1 at a time. Let me know…Valentine Lady…Thanks again…

GabbyPA 2011-11-29 13:47:21 -0600 Report

I rather imagine you could. People sell frozen ones all the time. I also have a whip recipe I got from here that is for lemon whip. I think you could adjust it and make a pumpkin whip as well. That would be yummy. Pumpkin is actually VERY good for us. It is sad we only eat it a couple times a year and then we eat it sweet. I found a great pumpkin soup recipe here as well....try your pumpkin in all kinds of ways.

I had no plan, and not much of anything different from any other day. My wife does not like turkey, dressing, or gravy. Don't feel sorry for me! My wife bought 3 turkey drumsticks and a bag of dry stuff for dressing. I had turkey dinners for three days, with dressing and gravy. Only 35 carbs at each meal. I do not eat desserts with my meals. Fruit for snacks is my dessert. My blood sugar was very good.

After 66 years of type 1, I am very healthy, so I am THANKFUL every day, not just on Thanksgiving.

I stressed out over the food choices..I only ate some turkey and my BG was high all day because I was stressed. I wanted to just stay home…I am very sensitive to cards even a spoon full will do me in. As the night ended my sugar was back on track. Why do I stress out over food…and how many units of insulin do I take for stress??? I need to relax. I bet you enjoyed that sliver of PP. Congrats to the 127!

Kelley: Ys I did enjoy that pie, even 2 slivers was great. I am also very sensitive to carbs. Too much and we all knows what happens, not enough and my BG goes nuts and I drop fast. So I have to be so very careful, I worried until 5:00 p.m. what my sugar would be. I just lucked out. I agree with Gabby, you need to ask your Dr. about how much insulin you should take for stress. I think a lot of us would like to know. Good Luck in your future, let us know. Valentine Lady

My doctor never asked what I do for Fun…I am a down hill skier. I love to ski and when I do my sugar levels are so high sometimes…I always wondered maybe it the altitude …maybe I am over working my body…nope it's the Adrenline rush I get when I am going down! Adrenaline is a hormone that need insulin…I just figured this out not to long ago…what do you think?

Caroltoo 2011-11-28 13:21:11 -0600 Report

Kelley: skiing is a lot of fun, but physiologically it stresses the body. Seems like "good stress", but any stress, good or bad, raises the adrenaline. You got it right!

I'm glad your BG was only 197, it's the 300's plus that worries me. Are you following a strict eating plan? and if not you should be. With BG that high, serious damage is being done to your kidneys, etc. and you know that, don't you?!?!? I know the damage diabetes can do when not in control. Please' for yourself, get those numbers down. Just thinking of your well-being, I have your best in my heart. Valentine Lady

Young1s 2011-11-28 08:16:55 -0600 Report

I don't think that is right. Because, think about it. If that was the case, the hospitals would be overrun by diabetics on a daily basis. When I was innitially diagnosed, both my doctor and my diabetic nurse said that it is anything over 300 for three days in a row.

I did OK on Thanksgiving day, but on the way home from my son's we stopped at an outlet mall (We don't usually do things like that on Black Friday, but…) and I was able to pick up something called soft pretzel bites. Yikes. They were really really good, but… but 5:00 last night blood sugar was way out of whack. Over 200. Needless to say bolus was a big one. This morning it was back down to 96.
