Nowhere NEAR ENOUGH!! Suppose to test FBS then before each meal and 2 hrs. after each meal and once before bed. Somehow I ALWAYS manage to forget somewhere down the line. Lucky if I test 3 times a day!

actually 3 x/day is pretty good. I test when I first get up (fasting) and then test 2 hrs after one of my meals (can be a different meal each day of the week) and then just before I go to bed.

2-4 times daily Total. Depends on how pristine my eating is and what I am doing. If I have steamed fish and spinach for lunch (a favorite) I see no reason to test. If I have pasta. I may test before and two hours after to make sure, I am alright, first to eat it and second to see if I have no ill effects. More if I feel woozy or light headed. Also after exercising strenuously (everyones definition of that is different). I have had some drops then, so play it safe. If I drop its an excuse to have a taste of real OJ!

I was told i need to only test once a day randomly and log. Why? They have me on formin at dinner. What is the point of testing?

I would suspect that the doctor wants to see trends so they can adjust your medication as necessary at your next visit. I'm still new at this (diagnosed early October) so I'm testing 3-4 times a day. I test every morning because my fasting blood sugar is still higher than I'd like and then I check 2hrs after some meals. Occasionally I'll check before a meal as well if I am uncertain what the meal will do to my numbers. Most of the people that I've heard at once a day either have good control or are limited to that by their insurance (medicare?).

If you use insulin, I would say a minimum of 4 tests daily is needed. And I agree that testing before and after exercise is wise to avoid lows. When I was on MDI (Multiple Daily Injections), I tested a minimum of 4 times daily and up to 6 times if I felt a low coming on or if I were exercising. Since starting the pump on August 16, I'm testing 7 to 10 times a day to gather the data needed to properly establish the pump settings. After we get that down, I expect to be able to cut back to 4 to 6 times a day. Luckily, I have insurance that pays part of the cost of the test strips but my out of pocket is around $50/month for them. It's one of the more expensive parts of dealing with diabetes.

I test 2hrs after eating. So it is either 2 or 3 times a day. If i don't work that day i typically don't eat until later. My schedule is crazy because of my job.
But I heard that you should test after you exercise, right? I have not started a program yet, but going tomorrow about starting at our local rec. center.
