We all know that carrots protect your eyesight, but new research shows that some other foods may be just as important in preserving your vision, especially against such age-related disorders as macular degeneration and cataracts.

SPINACH: contains lutein which protects the macula (center of retina) from cell damage and protects against cataracts and macular degeneration.

SALMON: contains DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) which prevents abnormal blood vessels from building up in the retina and protects against retinopathy.

BLACKBERRIES: contain anthocyanins which lower blood pressure, improves blood flow to the eye, and protects against macular degeneration.

SOY: contains isoflavins which improve tear production and protects against dry eyes.

ORANGE BELL PEPPERS: contains zeaxanthin which protects the retina from the damaging effects of sunlight and oxidative stress which protects against macular degeneration.

Thank you Renee! My Mom, an aunt and an uncle and their Mom, my grandmother, were legally blind due to AMD (Age-related Macular Degeneration). And my Dad lost an eye to glaucoma. One of my worst fears is losing my eyesight. Along with the family history and the diabetes, my risk is high. I love spinach, salmon and blackberries and will feel less guilty about spending the money to buy them now in the hope that I can stave off any damage to my eyes. I appreciate the info!

You are very welcome Lou! We know with D that we are particularly vulnerable to eye disease so anything I find about it I will share!!

This info just moved spinach to a 3 times a week thing for me and I'll make sure my daughter gets some as she has eye problems and has to wear glasses.

Hello Sayed! I googled marigold, also known as calendula, and it does indeed list a wash for sore and infected eyes as one of many uses! So thanks for that!
