Sorry for the challenges you are facing. Forget about having to give up some favorite foods. We've all had to do that. Your health is the number 1 goal, no matter what you have to eat. Do what is necessary to avoid further complications…after all, food is not that big a deal considering the consequences. My thoughts go out to you, but be disciplined and do what you have to do…Eat to Live! (not the other way around)

HI Melanie,

I am so sorry to hear your news. This is a lot to deal with. I can understand why you would be asking "Why me?" It's one of those questions that there aren't any answers to, but it's only human nature to ask it.

This is a good time to be close to people that you care about, who can listen without judgment and without trying to fix you or tell you how you should think or feel. A good time for support.

I hope that you have people in your life who can do that for and with you. Having some kind of spiritual connection can also be a source of strength.

I hope that you will stay close with your friends here on Diabetic Connect. Let us walk this road along beside you.

Gary

So sorry to hear about your health problems. I will pray for you. Hopefully before you need to go on dialysis they will find you another kidney. Hopefully you have family and someone is a match and they will step up for you and donate one to you. Never think it's over though. The fat lady has not sung yet. Their are angles watching over you. I know right now you don't think so but try and stay calm. You will find new favorite foods. It's always darkest before the dawn. We all have had really bad spells. Give it a few weeks and look into things before thinking about turning a gun onto yourself. People care and are praying for you. I'm going to pray for you now. God Bless!

I know the feeling Melanie! My kidney function is now 20% and I am at the razor's edge of going on Hemodialysis again (I was on it for 10 months from Nov 2006 through July 2007) But as I told you in the email reply to yours, my Glomular Filtration rate (GFR) was 14% 2 months ago. I didn't think my GFR could improve but it improved 6% pts in the past 2 months.

You do not go on Hemo until you drop below 10% GFR. Look over the links and the info I sent you as a reply to yours and it MAY not be all gloom and doom.

Even if I have to go on dialysis, it is not really all that bad. I have had it before so it is not so scarey for me.

I drink water only to avoid working my kidneys harder than needed. Let me know either here or via email should you need more information. The Library link I sent you from AAKP should give you a lot of food for thought.

I had some crappy hands of cards when my kidneys quit on me in Nov 2006 and I had thought about giving up and letting my ESRD "take me". I chose not to give in to despair and give my sons a bad example of how to deal with some of life's crappy hands. After I chose not to give in to the despair, my life improved a great deal. Not all of a sudden, but over time. Kidneys started working and I was able to get off dialysis, and then a "Jem" dropped into my life and improved it a whole lot. I am today much much better, even though my Jem has passed from this life.

You have a long way to go till you need dialysis of any kind (hemo or peri) and perhaps you can reverse the slide of your GFRs and you won't need to be on the transplant lists.

Prayers that you can do it.

Blessings to you and yours

James

I am sorry to hear that you are having more kidney problems again. My last visit my kidney's were working at 40%=was a cmplee surprise to me, but they said it was due to the cisplatin chemo I years in 2004. You;ve lost alot of weight since I talked to you last. John & I are still not back after our camphosting this summer. We have stopped and visited several of our new "camphost buddies" on the way home to Washington. You will be in my prayers. It seems like you have had your share of challenges, but you always seem to have a positive attitude. You inspire me. Take care, Elaine

Dear Malanie: I have a very similar problem as you. My kidney funtion is back up to 60%. If I get dehydrated, espically from drinking to much iced tea rather than water I end up in the hospital with IV fluids. 1st may I suggest to get off the water pills, you don't want anymore damage done then already has been. Flush your body out with atleast 36oz. of water daily. I do and have no more problems in that area. The water flushes the built up water in your system. If you have to give those foods up, do so ASAP. Do it gladly knowing your helping your kidneys. Which is saving your life. Lastly, my friend had a kidney transplant and is so thankful she did. She takes a lot of medicaton so her body won't reject the new kidney, but, she's not on dialysys either. She only has the one kidney. She knew what she should do but she didn't. She just got lucky with the transplant. So hang in there girl, oh yeah the urinary tract infection. I get those if someone blinks at me wrong. My Dr. just puts me on antibiotics and it goes away in 9 or 10 days. I'm not trying to minamize your pain, but there is no reason to want to shoot yourself either. All of this can be fixed…Hugs to you and hoping your day is more a Blessed one…Valentine Lady

The Doctors told my husband he would never walk after his accident. He walked for 9 years.
My friend was told she had cancer and it turned out to be a gal stone.

I just say that to say that doctors are not always right and they don't know everything. And those that are so flat and cold like that, really don't believe in the power of the human body. But you can. You can show them wrong and give them a fight. You can be the exception that they talk about for years to come. It is not easy and it will be crappy sometimes. But you can show them that you have power that they just don't understand. They can always use a good dose of humility.

Dear One, Can you research other treatment? I have been drinking unsweetened almond milk and it really does satisfy me like milk. I never thought it would. Can you get a second opinion, perhaps research someone who specializes in your areas of needs? You may find someone who does something different. Maybe stop the water pills. Flush yourself with water drinking a lot. Kidneys shut down when you dehydrate. Remember God is bigger than this. I will pray and ask him to heal you and you do the same!

I know exactly how you feel.! I am on a low phosphorus, low potassium , low protein diet…there are days I want to dig a hole and curl up in it. (my can not give up is diet coke) My GP mentioned 6 months ago that my eGFR was low, so he had me drink extra liquids thinking I was dehydrated , took another test and it is worse..my function is 33 %, so now they start to do something…I have been sent to 3 different specialist in the past month…I have low this high that..they have me on more pills and injections…what's the use?
I go back at the end of the month to see wear I am at…I can't give up..I will watch my daughter get married and have kids (she is 15 now, so I have to keep going at least 10 years)) Keep your chin up and keep in touch.

I'm terribly sorry to hear this. I'm a dialysis tech so i know how hard it is. My father was also on dialysis for over 2yrs, so i understand that aspect also. The diet is rough, but a lot of people do it. I agree with Heather, see a nutritionist to help you redesign your diet. I hope it gets better for you. Please do not give up hope. You don't walk this journey alone. Lean on Jesus, he is there for you. I'm putting you in my prayers. God Bless

I think it's time revisit a nutritionist. I know you have more limitations now but together you guys can figure it out. I am so sorry that you have to go through one more thing. Keep your chin up. you can do this too.

Although it seems impossible now be strong. I am so new to this a little over 2 months, but this sight is wonderful. Keep your head up high and keep striving God is close although we often wonder why me he only can remind us that times like this we are reminded how much we need him and how he sends us people like the ones on this site who actually can relate to our issues. Think positive knowing that we all are here with you. Hugs and prayers!
