Be careful for PAD (Peripheral Artery Disease). Went to a seminar on it last week sponsored by the cardiology group from Innova Health Center (where I had my bypass 10 years ago). PAD causes pain in your legs…lack of circulation/oxygen. Diabetics are especially vulnerable. Look up this disease…there's an easy, cheap, non-invasive test. They compare the Blood Pressure reading in your arm with the blood pressure in your lower leg (above the ankle). If there's a big difference, then you have the disease. The cures range depending on severity…everything from a relatively simple clearing of the femoral artery with a stent, to surgery. If you smoke, quit! Smoking severely further constricts this artery. As diabetics, we all know how important it is to have decent blood flow to your feet. If you don't, you're going to have miserable costly complications. Anyway, control and exercise are extremely important.

I had leg and feet cramps. I increased both my water increase and my calcium increase and I know longer have any problems. If you do decide to take a supplement, I would just try a good 1 A Day Multiple Vitamin. A generic for Centrum would be quite good. That will help in case you are needing some other vitamins or minerals other than Potassium and Calcium.

You may need to add calcium supplements to your diet. My Dr. put me on them when I started getting cramps in the back of my legs. Talk to your Dr. or health food store about it…Valentine Lady

I get both leg and foot cramps. I have found that drinking enough water helps, as does eating bananas. I know you have to be careful about what you eat and bananas can affect blood sugar. I have also taken potassium supplements and that has helped. Have you asked your doctor about this?

another thing to be aware of if you are forward in your seat there is a tendency to push with your toes esp in shooters as if your body was trying to dodge flexing the toes will press the calf muscles causing cramping and tightening both durin play and some times in the middle of the night realization from my own experience

Try bananas too. Lots of potassium. :)

Not if it's small bananas.

suit yourself! But you might want to use your meter to test to confirm whether it is shooting your BG levels very high, I just know that for myself the carbs really kick me, and the potassium is bad for my kidneys as a kidney patient too.

My problem has been low potassium levels at times due to certain meds needed for allergies & asthma.

I found the food w/highest potassium that is NOT a carb is King Crab Legs. Also too expensive! :)

Stretch before you sit & flex while you play. I'm a gamer also (PS3, PC games - Guild Wars, Champions Online, City of Hero's..etc). I was diagnosed with a herniated & bulging disk at T4/T5 smack dab on top of each other after a injury from clearing out an inground pool. I was bedbound for a week, did PT & chiropractic treatment for a year to get better. Sitting for long periods can put strain on the muscles and nerves in the lower back down to your toes. Stretching can help alleviate this & moving muscles while sitting can help. Try rotating your ankles and flexing your feet, straighten your legs a couple of times or just stand up for a few secs & walk in place. If you get muscle cramps or pain frequently..have your doctor check your sodium levels, particularly potassium as too high or low levels can cause muscle pain, cramps, and weakness.

Try some magnesium. I was having severe cramping at night, almost too painful to get out of bed and walk it off. Mom told me about the magnesium and my cramps have been few and far between and nowhere near as severe.
Or, you can always stand up and do your gaming systems!

Yes saber, my V-D level was less than 4, almost none, I take 5000 mgs a day, which some say is high, but it makes me feel better. I think we should have our levels checked yearly to make sure were on the correct dose. Thanks for writting me, your friend and member Teri sadi23

I had a really bad Vit D defiitency(SP?) in 2009 & my Rheu Dr put me on 50,000 units of Vit D weekly for 3 months to get it up to where it should be. Yes I wrote that correctly & you read it correctly. Fifty thousand units weekly. Then he had me take a 1,000 unit OTC pill 1 a day after that so I was getting 7,000 a week.

So in my eyes 5000 units are not that high.

sadi23 2011-10-17 21:22:20 -0500 Report

Yes I have heard of taking 50,000 units, so that sounds fine to me, but I have been questioned about my 5000 mgs, that is why I stated that. When I found my levels were so low, i then found out how important to our health VD3 is for our bodies and health, I like to share that with others, that were like me, that didn't know they should have their levels checked, and how important it is to have it checked, and get on the dose their doctor feels is correct to them. VD3 makes me feel better, I am thankful for that…Thanks for shareing..keep in touch Teri

That was a smart idea. I was very fatigued at the time & didn't know what was going on. Also vit D helps in the absorbtion of calcium. The main way we get Vit D outside of supplements is being in the sunshine. The weird thing for me was that I was in the sun a good amount cause I worked w/ kids & oversaw Recreation programs outdoors. I also coached 6&7 yr olds in baseball. The same year I ended up in the hosp for emergency hernia surgery & they found out at that time I also had very low protein in my body. So now I follow a high protein diet.

My Rheu Dr said the low vit D could have occured due to some of the other meds I was taking. I clarified 50,000 units by writting it out like this "Fifty Thousand" Cause people tend to think I accidently put an extra zero & the comma in the wrong place.

I know I take C, fish oil, & magnesium, but I will add others tomorrow when I have my list. By the way, every time I go to any health provider, I give them a dated copy of my list. The list includes my basic info, my PCP, all supplements, all rx's and all OTC meds. I did take D, but my levels were high, so I have been off of that for 2 years. As best i can remember, the only supplement that I know has done me good is the magnesium. When I stop it, the leg cramps start. Start it back up and they quit. Okay, need to spray another 2 gallons of insecticide to cut down on these beetles that look like ladybugs, but aren't and on stink bugs. Be back tomorrow.

jayabee52 James, I am so sorry about your lovely wife, I am sure she is with my Grandmother, she also had Lupus and diabetes. i feel her with me, since my new diagnoses only 2 months or so ago, (Diabetes) I remember, she lived next door, My parents were un-health parents, so I spent most of my time, next door at her home. She always had sugar free candy, we would have these great lunches, Tuna, she'd rince (back then it was packed only in oil) she'd put it back in the open can, then Decf coffee, for me only a little, with non-sugar, and powdered milk, then rye crisp with sugar free jam, she made…we would eat the tuna right out of the can, and she would tell me stories. I couldn't ever eat tuna like that at home, as it had to be made up with a lot of stuff, so it could feed several. She weighed her food, and had sections on my plate, with each food group. She also took, several vitamins, and this was back when not many took vitamins. She was the head Nurse at the Hospital, she was before her time, doing assisted surgeries, before nurses were even allowed in the operation room. She did Hospit, before there was hospit. she would take me with her, as she would go to their homes, through the night. We would brush their hair, do their nails, read to them. My mom and others, thought it was sick, she took me to dieing peoples home, as they would die, over time, but my grandmother, always told me "we were making their last day's on earth, as comfortable, happy and they would look so nice, when they got to the golden gates, to enter Heaven…I felt good about sharing those years with her. I started work, at the nursing home right down the road from my home, I was 16 yrs old, road my bike to work, after school.. i took a year of nursing, but I realised that I wanted more person contact with the people, not just treat many, and move on. Looking back, I see many of our times together, eating etc. were her eating diabetic, was how she was feeding me healthy and making it fun…As i learn, I remember, much is what my grandmother did daily. i think of her often, she was a women before her time, I got much of my strangth and work ethic through her. I hope your wife is up there with her:):) thanks for sharing..:) Teri

Thanks for sharing those precious memories with me Teri.

My Jem was an exceptional lady too. She had been blind since age 14 but her mind was razor sharp till the end. She earned BA and MSW degrees and got her LCSW license her first try. Some sighted people couldn't do that. She had the streets around her little city memorized and could tell me which way to turn when I told her what cross streets we were at, and she had many phone numbers memorized and remembered her credit card numbers.

She took this loser of a guy (divorced and lost a profession) and believed in me and changed my life and my attitude. I had been depressed and borderline suicidal. She brightened my life where I am no longer depressed (even after she passed from this life) and no longer suicidal.

Her friends told me that I had a wonderful effect on her too, as she felt that men would get so close and then eventually dump her. Well I proved her wrong about that. Sometimes she wanted to break off our relationship even though she admitted she loved me, but I convinced her to stick with me. The only way she would know if I was telling her the truth that I wouldn't voluntarily leave her was to stick it out and see it to the end.

What we had was symbiosis of the best kind. She had what I needed and I had what she needed and it was WONDERFUL!

She unfortunately had a lot of "medical challenges" which made her life difficult, but caused me to love her more for the way she faced them with pluck, determination and good humor.

Time to quit now, or I'll write a book.

That Lupus is wicked. You never know how it will reveal its ugly head. There are a lot of battles that we must face each day, most are not easy. Some we know we are going to lose, we just try to figure out how to hold on and for how long. Some of the battles that people here on DC have faced, are facing or will face in the future, just boggle my mind. Remember when you are tired and beat and don't think you can go on, just crawl up onto the lap of Your Father and allow Him to swallow you in His embrace. Peace to you, my friend. Jim

Jim, i remember when I just had flares, as Lupus starts out that way, I would be doing well, working etc. and Bam! I would get so sick, miss a lot of work, in and out of the hospital, which all su*ked, but then after years, my Lupus cause many more serious medical diseases, and other medical problems. They are called "Secondary" caused by the mail illness, it also means, that some can have one of my disease, alone and it will progress for them, and often treatment can be very sucessful. As a Secondary, its like Lupus is a fire, and the other medical issues are like throughing gas on many or all of the other medical problems.. also after many years, I don't have "Flare ups" anymore, I am sick 24/7. I have organ failures, organ and tissue damage, like my bladder is shot, so it is nescessary for me to Cath to urinate, Systemic problems, Chroinic infections, and Chronic over growth of Yeast and bacteria, bone infections, absesses and sores systemic, Chronic joint, Muscel, bone & skeletal system, Osteoporosis, Sjogrens (destroy's Mucus Membrains ) COPD, Lymph Node issues, Liver Toxicity & Damage, Vasular Raynaud's Disease & gastrointestinal problems, Neuolgic & Memory problems, and organ deterioration and pain with exhaustion, and just recently diagnosed with Diabetes. I feel it will never end. It almost sounds silly, that one person could possibly have all these medical conditions. But I do, I try to keep possitive, as I have been told, I am at deaths door, but I was told this many other times, and I proved them wrong!! so I keep having to prove myself daily, that i am not ready, so go knock on someone elses door haha hehe, thank you for you repeated kind words and support, I am glad to call you my friend..lots of hugs…keep intouch…hjope to talk again soon…Teri

Thank you saber32, most of my problems, can't be fixed, some doctors can make them not so painful, or slow down there destruction, to my body. I am trying anything out there that can prolong my life, and make me fill a bit better. i was only diagnoed with diabetes, a few months ago, but I am quite sure i have had it for a long time, I plan to educate myself and get it under control, that will help my health and the way I feel…so I am happy there is something i can get control of, and help it from getting so much worse. I thank you and all the friends here helping me to learn more about Diabetes and how to control it, and little tricks that help a lot. i added a boiled egg with my meal, and lowered my BS, someone here told me that. 2 TBS of wine vinager with 2 TBS medamulal sorry spelling, the fiber drink, its orange, in a glass of water, drink before bed. My doctor told me that, it helps with your blood, & heart as well. My morning fasting BS lowered. Doc said it helps provent blood clots, most people have strokes, in the am, so it helps to drink it at bed time, for provention. i am giving it a try.I like wine vinager…i have heard, taking some before meals helps the digestion? not sure about it, but since I like it, i will try it as well…thanks for your reply..your a good friend…how long have you had Diabetes? how old are you? Thank you all for the great info we can all use, i know i can, but I want to say to everyone, to check with their doctor, as I have found, one thing that is great for many people, can really hurt me, as i have many other medical conditions, and Lupus really messes with my body and how it runs, things that help almost everyone else, can kill me. things that build the immun system, can make me very ill, as my immun-system, will start attacking me. 'My doctors said, its like my immun-system is like a army, which should attack and kill bad infaders, but my army is like its on "Crack" and doesn't see the bad infaders, it will attact my healthy tissues, organs, while the bad infaders, run wild throughout my body, destroying my healthy parts of my body. Many things that most people can talorate, like Honey…My body can't fight the bacteria that is in Honey, even though there is very little, it will grow in my body, ad then begin to make me very ill over time. I can't be in the sun, It makes me very ill, as a teen, my sister and I would lay out in the sun, for 1/2 hour or so, she would come in and clean up and go out with her friends. I would kinda stumble in, feeling like I have the flu, lie down for the rest of the day, and feel like I have the flu with joint, muscel pain, sore growing eyes hurt w/senstive to light, lelt like i was beat up, for the next day or week, I would never know…This was before i was diagnosed with Lupus…I can't eat honey, sprouts, some milk and cheese, as they make me very sick, as my body attacts the good and doesn't attact the bad, most often… So often many people are different, even though they may have the same medical condition. So please check with your speciaiists on what you would like to try as a added or new treatment, for your condition, and will it comply with your medications, as that is another story, many things don't go well with my many monthly medications. I just worry about all my friends here, so always check, I am sure you already know that, but its always good to remind..:):):) keep giving me Vitamins and other out of the box treatments, that have seemed to help you… I will post a few good daily treatments, that doctors have told me over the years, that are some of my most important daily treatments, that I couldn't live without, and many are OTC's and should not cause any problems, and can help others, even if they don't have Lupus or any of my medical conditions. I am new on Diabetes Connect" but been a member of Lupus for quite some time, I wish we could use disscussions we write on one connect site, and move it to another, so I don't have to write it twice? If so let me know how, and if I can edit the disscussion I may of wrote on the Lupus site, so it fits better to the Diabetes site..Boy does that make any sence?? sorry..God Bless and watch over you and yours..keep intouch hugs Teri sadi23

Howdy Teri

There's no reason I can see why you can't use what you write on Lupis site highlight, cut, and paste into DC. I have sone something like that when I posted a discussion about NSAIDs. No problem.

I am sorry you have SLE. That is really rough. I don't have it, but my bride "Jem" did, and I hated to see it flare for her. I felt so helpless to do anything to help her. She passed from this life in July 2010. I miss her and would love to have her back with me. But if it means she'd have to suffer again with another attack, I wouldn't want her to have to go through that again. So I have to wait until I am on the "other side" of this life to be with her again.

I wouldn't know why you can't eat honey, as honey is known as an antibacterial agent. It can be used topiclly to disinfect wounds. Perhaps what might be the problem is raw honey has pollen in it, which may irritate your system. Other than that, I wouldn't have any idea why it would do that.

Blessings to you and yours!
