Could someone tell me what vinegar does to lower you blood sugar, please? Also, after I exercise, my blood sugar is higher rather than lower. Any ideas why? Thanks for any information.

I do eat something before I exercise. Usually protein with about 15 carbs too. If I am on a long walk, I carry and energy bar too. I have never tried vinegar. I am with AutumnBill and think it's best on salad:)

Exercise has caused me muscle soreness, or should I say over exercise. Anyway people suggested I may be low on pottasium, but with my kidney insufficiency a pottasium supplement is not an option. It's only STRETCH, S T R E T C H, S T R E T C H.

Do you eat before you excercise? I always eat a high protein meal before excercise. I also test one hour after. My BG are usually lower than before I began.
Try it, it may work for you.

I have had the same problem with exercise…What has corrected it for me is to eat a light carbo meal 3 hours prior to exercise. Stress (including the physical stress on your body from exercise increases your blood glucose) As long as it comes back down it's okay…I give myself one hour without eating anything after i exercise and then i recheck…and thankfully it's back down to normal

I am using an extract of garlic, ginger, lemon, apple vinegar and honey all mixed in equal proportions 2 spoons before breakfast and I think it is helpful in maintaining BP, cholesterol and possibly in controlling BG levels too.

Chitty have you tested for ketones in your urine. You run a higher risk of BS increasing after exercise if you are spilling ketones in your urine.

gadgetgirl007 2011-10-16 14:02:45 -0500 Report

I don't know if there are ketones in my urine, I was just very surprised to have a high blood sugar, 151 after a 55 minutes of a very intense cycle/spinning class that followed 20 minutes on an elliptical machine. I found that depressing & confusing.

margokittycat 2011-10-16 14:11:41 -0500 Report

It is pssible that with that exercise that maybe your BS started dropping while exercising and then started turning stored fat into sugar and that spiked your BS. My doctor always told me to check my BS before intense exercise and check for ketones. Usually if you are spelling ketones, and do intense exercise that will spike your BS up instead of down right away.

It could also be due to a Liver dump where the liver dumps stored glycogen which is there for emergency lows. Everyone both PWDs and non PWDs store it in our livers. It is usually used for a quick burst of energy in the morning after sleeping all those hours.

Howdy Gadgetgirl
I am CKD stage 4, almost to stage 5 and needing dialysis, so tell me about it!

This "liver issue" is not a malfunction. It is SUPPOSED to do that to protect ANYONE (PWds or Non PWDs alike) from low Blood Glucose readings.

gadgetgirl007 2011-10-18 07:41:30 -0500 Report

I almost never get low BS readings, at least when I test. I think I'm @ stage 3 CKD. I assume CKD refers to kidney disease.

jayabee52 2011-10-18 08:17:51 -0500 Report

Howdy Gail.
Yes, CKD = Chronic Kidney Disease.

Here is something I found from "National Kidney Foundation" Diabetes and Kidney disease which may explain the stages of Kidney Disease further: On page 2 it tells how the GFRs and the stages of CKD are related. Do you know your most recent GFR? Then you can know in what stage of CKD you are.

Blessings to you and yours

Like I said/thought, Level 3 CKD, 53 GFR from January 2011, lowest was 47/48 in February 2010, highest was 72 in July 2007.
Noted on the info. page mention of dialysis, my Nephrologist/Kidney specialist says not until the end stages of Level 5 do I need dialysis.

Most pharmacies have the ketone testing strip. Wal Mart carries them. You just pee on the stick and time it and then check it against the bottle or the sheet that comes with the strips. It will tell you if you are spilling or not.

Personally when I use Apple Cider Vinegar, it never made a difference with my sugar numbers BUT it helped with my high blood pressure.

In another study, Johnston found that taking 2 tablespoons of apple-cider vinegar along with 1 ounce of cheese before bedtime led to a 4 to 6 percent decrease in fasting blood sugar levels, according to an article in Diabetes Care (November 2007). Meanwhile, Lund University’s Ostman found that people were less hungry a couple hours after consuming vinegar with bread, as opposed to bread alone, according to a report in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition (September 2005).

Because taking a teaspoon or two of vinegar alone seems to cause burping and acid reflux in a lot of people, Johnston suggests that people include vinegar with food. The easiest way is by using oil and vinegar salad dressing, made with balsamic, red wine, apple-cider, or any number of flavored vinegars (avoid the fruity, sweet ones, of course, or you may cancel out the benefit). When making the dressing, use about 50 to 75 percent vinegar, and add some diced garlic, dried oregano, and basil — or stir in a little Dijon mustard.

Now my BS #'s are all over the map, so I would not be able to measure a 4-6% difference and say it is because of the vinegar, but after reading 3 of these articles it is something I will be working on including in my diet and see what happens over the long haul. I love to do the apple cider vinegar with the garlic, oregano, basil & mustard, and probably onion and green pepper too!

Mickey/CCHT 2011-10-15 23:21:50 -0500 Report

That sounds good. I've wanted to do the apple cider vinegar. I know a few people that have lost weight on it. I had a pt whose husband followed some apple vinegar diet and lost a ton of weight, lowered his blood pressure and was no longer dieabetic! I think he had to drink alot of it though! I can't even stand the smell of straight vinegar so i was never able to try it! Bummer!

After you drink a pint of vinegar, you don't want to eat for a long time, so your sugar drops. Actually vinegar is a mild acid. If I remember right it does something to the body to slow the absorption of sugar. Now, if it were me, I would try and find a way to ingest about 1/4 of a cup and test my sugar again in about 15 minutes. However, if I completely remember the long ago article, it would be best consumed BEFORE you exercise. Since it is something that is not going to hurt me, I would experiment with it. Take your sugar before you exercise, then about 15 minutes after you stop (to allow your heart to return to normal), then take the vinegar and test 15 minutes later.
The 2nd way, I would test, consume the vinegar, either wait or warm up by walking (mild exercise), exercise, cool down for 15 minutes and retest. The 15 minutes are allowed to let your body adjust to what is being done to it. Jim
