1. Artichokes

The use of artichokes has been implicated in the lowering of cholesterol levels in the blood. Since hypercholesterolemia is one of the risk factors for high blood pressure, this information is actually good news. Three clinical trials conducted separately by Dr. Barbara Wider supports this fact. In Cochrane Database of Systemic Reviews’ October 2009 issue, where the result of the study was published, it was shown that patients who were diagnosed with hypercholesterolemia and given Artichoke leaf extract exhibited a decrease in their blood cholesterol levels.

My husband and I use natural herbs for a variety of things: valerian root to help promote sleep, melatonin to help relaxation/sleep, milk thistle for good liver function, as I have Hep. C, Licorice root and Ginger root for fresh teas for upset stomach. We use lots of garlic, eat lots of bananas-for the potassium(cramps in my legs at night), lots of green veggies-for the fiber plus psyllium husk. They all help and they are all natural.

Why do so many things that are good for you taste icky!?! It's terrible to be such a picky eater! I do like guacamole(?sp), does that count? LOL

These tips for eating healthy foods has to be taken with a pinch of salt as I suspect it was intended for folks who have no major medical challenges.

For instance, eating 5 Bananas a day (I loved eating them) for me with my T2 diabetes would send my BG levels into the stratosphere, and if done every day they would probably not ever come down close to normal (especially for those of us attempting to manage our BG levels through our menu planning) That is to say nothing of those of us who are kidney patients. The potassium in one bannana is forbidden to those who are attempting to maintain their kidney filtering levels, and also to those on dialysis. (Before my Dx with Diabetes bananas were my favorite go-to fruit)

So those are the things which jumped out at me, with my multiple Dx's.

Your right about the bananas. People with renal failure can't have them. There is a slight few who are allowed cuz there potassium levels are so low. It's few and far between though. I know when a pt brings one in during dialysis for a snack and the other pt's smell it they are totally bummbed out! They also have to watch their phosphorus. The renal diet is HARD and if your also diabetic it's impossible.
