Very cool to add a link to other sites for DC. I don't have a blog or anything, but I added it to my signature on my email. So even if they can't get it directly, they can come visit anyway. If you do have a website or a blog, add the link and earn some points! Very cool, great way to get the word out.

Hope everyone is still linking to Diabetic Connect. If you haven't, please do. Every bit helps to bring us new members.

Ok guys, you know how to find your badge, I assume, it's on a lot of pages like your picture downloads and such; you click on the picture that says earn 1000 pts. and it will show you your choice of badges; pick one and click on it. BUT RATHER THAN GO THROUGH THE SAVING AND EMAILING; RIGHT CLICK AND SAVE TO YOUR PICTURES; THEN YOU CAN ADD IT TO ANY ATTACHMENT AND ADD A TAB ON YOUR TOOL BAR WITH IT ON IT. I went through the whole email to my husband the link; then he emailed it back to me; I opened up the link, and then right click and saved to my pictures, and added a tab. Next I am going to add it to my automatic signature. Good luck, I finally have mine; if you need help let me know.I just sent John and Amy and a few others (only ten allowed) because Amy had asked if anyone had found an answer on how to do it. anyway, I tried to include all the people I could

I don't know how to get the points, but I think you have to click on the link in your space and then it is tracked. John C is the one to ask about that. I am just happy to have it in my email signature so people who want to check us out can. I am very proud to be a part of this site...I am happy that they are letting us do this.

Can you tell me how to amend the code to make it open in a new window or tab so my page stays open, please?

2008-10-31 08:10:57 -0500 Report

copy and paste on your internet explorer and then it should save there, after you have used it.

I don't think you understand what I'm asking. I put the button on my blog. When people click on it, DC opens in the same window so if they want to keep reading my blog, they have to go back. When people click on the button, I want DC to open in a new tab or window. The code has to be altered, and I'd like to know how what I have to add.

Lee Ann:

Your Tu Diabetes badge does the same thing…doesn't it?

We are working on your fix though and understand what you mean…good idea.

Ya, not all my links are, but I've been trying to make them that way if possible as I add them and I remember. There's a thread here discussing applying it so I figured I'd ask.

If you're interested in starting a blog, here's one that's free and easy to get started.

Then if you want to add the Diabetic Connect badge, copy the code from our "Link to Us" page by clicking on the badge you want, then selecting "copy" from the edit menu.

Then go to your blog, choose "customize" and click on the "Layout" tab. Then on the right-hand side you should see a little link that says "Add a Gadget." That will bring up a list of all kinds of gadgets you can add. Click on the one that says "HTML/Javascript" and just paste the code you copied from Diabetic Connect into the "content" box and click "save." It's that easy.

look above our name there is a website then right below it tells you how to do it but i can't get the points

2008-10-30 20:37:23 -0500 Report

In order to get the points, you MUST click on your badge at least once. Just displaying it isn't enough. It's the only way the system can track things.

Let me know if you have any more trouble!

I figured mine out; I have yahoo and Gmail-Google site and I linked them together with the google add-on button autolink. so all you have to do is log onto google, sign on for email and toolbar buttons and get the autolink; open your blog on google and autolink the home pages together

Goddess 2008-10-30 10:05:40 -0500 Report

I do not have a blog or website. I have tried it at myspace, signature on email. It's not fair that a bunch of us can get put on anywhere!!!!!!!!!!!

2008-10-30 14:27:08 -0500 Report

MySpace is blocking the badges to Diabetic Connect, claiming that they are spam–I'm working on contacting their development team to see if we can straighten it out.

What issues are you having attaching it to email?

I've had problems posting links on myspace to articles or discussions on other diabetes communities. As far as they're concerned, it's their competition because it's another social network. Good luck getting them to turn that around…

I'm not very familiar with Facebook, but I'll certainly look into it today. Is there typically a way to add graphics to your profile?

John Crowley
John CrowleyCA 2008-10-30 17:45:28 -0500 Report

Just to clarify. These links are designed for personal websites and blogs to let others know about Diabetic Connect. Thank you to all those who have already placed them--that's great.

My Space and Facebook see sites like this one as a competing social network. Facebook won't allow you to post the image, but will allow you to share links from your profile page. If you use the link from our "Link to Us" page, it will still work the same.

We're still waiting to hear back from My Space, but as Lee Ann said, it looks a little bleak.

Let me know if I have thoroughly confused you :-)

I put the link on my tagged page, but would also like to put it on my facebook page. I have tried but I am not sure as to how i go about it. I can't get it to post on facebook. Any one know how or tried it yet? Thanks. Lanore

Lanore 2008-10-31 08:05:50 -0500 Report

Ok I have the code on my facebook but not and badge it self. That i put on my tagged page. It is cool and i like the idea. Wish facebook would allow it as well. Lanore

You may have noticed the giant orange banner in the left nav–custom badges are live and ready for you to use! Let us know what you think.

kdroberts 2008-10-30 10:52:38 -0500 Report

Might want to put a cancel or done button on the html view so people can easily see how to get rid of the box.

Also, there is a very, very easy way to get the points without actually posting the badge anywhere. I just tested it out so you can take my 1000 points away if you want.

2008-10-30 14:10:51 -0500 Report

Yeah, we're doing very simple checks for links.
If it becomes a problem we'll implement something stricter. Thanks for the heads up!

Sorry guys, I stumbled on it and got so excited...I wrote to John to ask him about it, because I couldn't find it again....I thought I was just having a senior moment. LOL

I told him it was okay to pull this disucssion so I don't confuse everyone more. Sorry...I can be dangerous on here. Watch out! LOL.

Sorry guys.

OOPS! We're still testing this feature. It is not quite ready to go live. And you guessed it! we accidentally saved it to the wrong server and it was live.

So, this will be like a sneak preview :-)

Coming very soon to a website near you :-)

Stay tuned.

John, I see we're offering a whopping 1000 points for this. Can you explain to folks what the points are good for?

John Crowley
John CrowleyCA 2008-10-30 18:06:01 -0500 Report

The points are a way to recognize those who contribute to making the site great. One of the best things anyone can do for a social community is to let others know about it. These Diabetic Connect badges will help us spread the word about this great community. That adds a lot of value to the site, so we wanted to reward those who participated.

Also, we're developing some new features that will add some extra benefits to those who have earned more points.
