Missing insulin

I would just like to know weather I can take my insulin after I have eaten. I sometimes forget to take my insulin before my breakfast, and was told that I have to take it just before I eat, so I usually miss out on the insulin that I was meant to have. I don't know if it will hurt for me to take it after I eat or not. I don't miss out all the time but sometimes it does happen.

Dear Narelle, This is probably a question best posed to your doctor because the answer probably depends on how much time has elapsed between when you should have taken it. My sense would be to take it right after your meal if you're aware that you forgot to take it before. Your body needs the insulin to metabolize what you've eaten, otherwise, your BG will undoubtedly skyrocket. I forgot what kind of insulin you take; I'm assuming it's one of the fast-acting ones like NovoLog or Humalog. In fact, if my mealtime BG is too low, I'll postpone taking my NovoLog until after I've eaten to try and get it up a bit before the insulin kicks in. Just my take on this, though.

Yeah, but remember, neither us or your doctor guarantee that our answers are right. Oh wait, I know my answers are right, but I don't know if you asked the right question!
