Does anyone know what the right amount of hour you should fast before taking the blood works for the A1C?

Fasting is not required if you are just taking an A1c. However, my doctor does all of my lipid panel at the same time so I fast a min of 12 hours before my labs.

Right Gabby, I've never had to fast for the A1C. Usually I do however so that when I get the results I can double check against my meter for that day and see how it is running.

Howdy Noel
Like snuggles said, there is no requirement to fast before taking the A1c test, if that is the only thing for which you are testing.

There MIGHT be fasting required should you be testing for anything else. Requirements differ for different blood tests. So look on your lab sheet to check and see which blood tests they will be doing and then call the lab to see if there is a requirement to fast before doing any of them. Ask them your question about how long to fast.

When I did A1c years ago, there was a 12 hour fast before hand as I recall.

Thanks for your reply to noel7 about fasting for A1C test. I've often wondered about fasting before blood work was taken .I know sometimes the lab will ask if you have fasted and usually they do several differant test at one time but I never know the amount of time I need to fast and frankly never thought to simply call the lab and ask. Thanks again
