I have read that taking actos makes one prone to broken bones but my doctor said the studies weren't conclusive yet. Tell me more about that

I was on Avandia for 6 mths and had a heart attack… last year they put me on actos and I started retaining fluid, no energy, was on it for 6 mths also . My doc took me off the actos and lost the fluid, and am full of energy. but each meds work different on each person. So it is your choice with your docs.

It's so interesting to hear anecdotes about weight gain. I have gained about 50# in the last 2 years in spite of exercise and diet. I had some broken ribs, but that was due to a hard fall on the edge of a cedar chest…

I actually broke my right ankle while I was on Actos. I am not exactly sure if taking it at the time was the reason it happened or not, but. it was not a good medicine for me.

I have been taking ACTOS for 3+ years and I have gained 45lbs, and will be talking to the Doc this week about a different med, what is a better choice with less side effects?

I've been taking Actos since diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. I've put on 50 lbs. +…after reading alot and having my diabetic nurse instructor tell me Actos puts on weight…I asked my dr. to take me off of it. He did. I'm losing weight and I have energy I haven't had in it has been the best thing for me, and I can tell the difference in my whole being.

I am currently taking Actos. Yes, one of my left ribs seems to be cracked or broken all the time. I am trying to convince my doctor that it is the actos. She states she only has recorded 1 time of it being broken. I can't afford to go and have x-rays all the time. Good Luck!

"change dr. actos and avandia are not good for anyone."

Can you back that up with a study, article in a medical journal or other medical research or is it your opinion? It's pretty dangerous and irresponsible to make claims like that if it's just opinion.

I took Actos for about 2 years, and never had any problems with it. I currently take Avandamet which is a combination of Avandia and Glucophage, also without any complications or problems. I'm also on Glimeperide, (Generic Amaryl), and the only warnings that that one realy has is possible sensitivity to excessive exposure to strong or artificial sunlight. Personaly, I'm had no problems there either.

I was taking Avandia for several years and I got concerned when there was a black box warning put on it.

My doc put me on Actos but there is a black box warning on it too. I'm going to ask to be taken off it.

I heard the broken bones was with Avandia, not Actos.

I take Actos, what exactly is a black box warning?????

kdroberts 2008-05-29 02:53:01 -0500 Report

It's given to a drug that has the possibility of a very severe side effect. The one for Actos/Avandia is for congestive heart failure. Basically, in my opinion, it's a stretch. The side effect was already listed on the medications but Steven Nissen and Kathy Wolski came up with some statistics based on other peoples studies. The issue is that in studies that totalled about 27,000 people, 86 people who took avandia had a heart attack compared to 72 who didn't take avandia and 39 others avandia takers had cardiovascular problems compared to 22 who didn't take avandia. The % increase was significant enough to have the black box warning but the overall % of people suffering these things was very small, I think around 0.2% or so in total.

kdroberts 2008-05-29 02:46:43 -0500 Report

The black box warning on Actos was inherited from Avandia. The "study" that came out that lead to the black box warning was only looking at Avandia, Actos got tied into it because it is the same class of drug. The original study got, and still gets, a lot of criticism and it really is quite weak when you really look at it. Having said that, you need to be comfortable with the medications you take but make sure you are fully informed of the risks and benefits before making the final choice.

I used Actos for over a year and the only problem I experienced was some weight gain. My doctor switched me to Glucophage and it is taking the weight back off. They have been taking about Actos for quite a while now, but I haven't heard any hard evidence. I would do more research if you are really concerned. Good luck.

You should also search the product reviews on Actos. There are several people in the community who have used it and would probably be glad to share with you.
