I was diagnosed with Type 2 last March with a A1C of 7.4. My doctor has me on Metformin, but did not instruct me to take daily BG measures. Should I be doing so? If yes, should I return to the doctor? Should I seek other medical guidance? Should I seek guidance from a Diabetic Clinic, such as one at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing,MI?

l have scheduled an appointment with my primary doctor to ask questions about testing BG levels and some other issues. Recently, a person from some diabetic service provider called to talk about easy and cheap access to testing tools and instruction. I was not interested then, but am now. Can someone advise me access to these items.

Howdy Jon, WELCOME to diabeticconnect!
I have said it once or twice before. If the Dr puts you on a diabetes lowering medication and does not give you a meter or instruct you to get one and take your BG levels that Dr is not looking out for YOUR best interests. It is borderline malpractice IMO. Were I treated that way I would find a new Dr, because this one does NOT have your best interests at heart.

Diabetic clinic sounds like a great Idea,I check in the morning to see where i am at before breakfast, then check at lunch and dinner(depending on what I ate during the day) and sometimes I need a night snack before bedtime when I take all my meds and then I check it again, you need to monitor yourself to see if your eating right, and keep a journal of your blood sugar readings with your diet ,this gives and Idea where your at,and if any foods spike your blood sugars…check…check…check

You should speak to a Diabetic educator and I would go see the Dr. who diagnosed you. I was diagnosed in July 2008 and my A1c was 9.6 at the time, I too was put on Metformin and a 9 carb a day diet and now my A1c is 6.2. So I would go talk to your Dr.
