I am so glad I am not really big on fast food or I would be in really big troublel listening to you guys. The closest to fast food I love is Olive Garden and their soup and salad deal. I love their Toscana soup, one bowl only. though I could get refills all day.

Miguel Jr's mexican restaurant is my favorite. Only 17 in the Corona area. My favorite meal is 84 carbs and I take 7 units of insulin to cover it and I don't have spikes from the meal

Tell me people, why is food that is SO ILLEGAL for us, taste SO DAMN GOOD? It really should be the other way around. Legal foods should be so bad for us, while all the damn illegal foods be so GOOD for us. Am I the only 1 that thinks like this?? Or subconsciously do we ALL think this way?

It seems like the stuff we like the most is what hurts us the most. I used to love to bake…breads, cookies, cakes, pies. All things as a diabetic that I should avoid. I rarely bake anymore. I have a cousin who has high cholesterol and heart disease issues. She loves her butter and eggs and cheese. She also made the best pies with home-made crusts using lard…really flaky…all things she should avoid. Of course, if we could eat all of the taboo things we crave, we might not savor them as much…it's the allure of the forbidden.

Just stopped at Subway for a delicious, well chilled salad…So tasty and the best thing about it, it was good for me…

Type1Lou 2011-10-02 17:01:07 -0500 Report

I agree…Subway has some really great options. Right now, my favorite is their Spinach and chicken salad, hold the onions and jalapenos, with ranch dressing!

2011-10-01 18:12:23 -0500 Report

Mine used to be Taco Bell. But I haven't eaten fast food in over 7.5 years. It's the F.C.C.C.S of food. (Fat, Calories, Cholesterol, Carbs, & Sodium). So no more fast foods for moi!!

Type1Lou 2011-10-01 11:58:06 -0500 Report

Taco Bell…specifically, their Mexican Pizza (45 grams of carb, though). I also eat lots of Subway's salads and McD's salads too. Love Panera's souffles and cheddar-broccoli soup too. It is getting easier to find lower-carb alternatives.

2011-10-01 18:13:23 -0500 Report

When did Subway start to serve salads? Very long ago?

Type1Lou 2011-10-02 12:57:14 -0500 Report

They've had salads for several years but Subway does feature their subs. If you look hard at their menu, you'll maybe notice that they will take any of the sub ingredients and make it into a salad for you. And their salads are quite large with a good assortment of dressings. I can usually eat one for around 20 grams of carb, including the dressing.

yes i eat chicken thats my favortie one.we have at least half dozen subways in the town next to mine 2 miles away this town has one subway. awesome

I have been a fast food junkie for over 50 years and still enjoying it. I like the burgers at Burger King (Whoppers and Single Stackers), the Chili Dogs at Checkers and the French fries at Wendy's. Wendy's fries are not only real good but it easy to get an order before they are salted. To me McDonald's have the worst tasting everything. :-)

2011-10-01 18:17:23 -0500 Report

Agree w/u about McDonalds. But I don't know if you consider Bob's Big Boy Restaurant fast food, but boy do I LOVE their Big Boy Combo. With salad and their Blue Cheese dressing. Get the dressing on the side, that way you have leftover dressing for the fries! YUMMY YUM YUM!!!!

I love all the food that I shouldn't eat. I am Italian, reared in an Italian household. Grew up on all varieties of pasta, pizza, lazangna, antipasto, homemade bread.I have to battle carbs.,,pitas, hot dogs, and anything on a bagle ,spaghetti tacos,.This is my Mount Everest. I have to overcome it ever day. Pete

Pete, you love all the food you can eat. Just don't gorge yourself and make it a daily matter. I usually plan two "lousy lunches" and one "dreadful dinner" a week.
Tomorrow, Sunday is my first “lousy lunch” at Burger King ( a #11 - Double Stacker Meal, small size). The second “lousy lunch” will be on Friday at Nathan’s after I see my cardiologist (a large #2 - 2 hot dogs with mustard, relish, sauerkraut and onions French fries and a Coke Zero). I haven’t decided on the “dreadful dinner” but it will probably be Wendy’s (a small double bacon cheeseburger deluxe value meal). The rest of the week its my usual Spartan fare. Try planning a meal “time out” to satisfy your cravings. You can do it and not destroy your numbers.
I too am from an Italian household. Thought my parents are long gone I enjoy all the goodies on the holidays at my brothers homes. Its always a feast of fine food and I eat it all but I don’t pig out.
Good luck on your climb. If you’re careful you can make your Mt. Everest an ant hill.

I like the salads at mcd's, bk, and wendy's. I get the grilled chicken (when that is part of the salad). I only eat half the salad at a time. If I'm really craving the chicken nuggets I get the kid's meal, and get apples instead of fries. My daughter tries to steal my toy! I haven't eaten at a fast food place since my diagnosis though. That was just what I did before.

ston3xc 2011-09-30 12:57:30 -0500 Report

Even with the salads, you have to watch. Look at the calorie count on the packet of dressing, and you need to nix the cheese and crutons. Now I'm depressed, that is why I don't eat fast food!lol

DragonDreams 2011-09-30 23:49:57 -0500 Report

I love the pomegranate vinaigrette at Wendy's. They give 2 packets with the salad, but I only need 1 to cover the whole salad. I save the other one for a salad at home later. Yeah you have to watch the nutrition for the salads, but half a salad or the value salad isn't too bad. At least a salad is better than a hamburger, and way better than a meal.

Type1Lou 2011-10-01 11:59:58 -0500 Report

If you eat the burger without the bun or the fries, the burger isn't so bad…but that's not really the same, is it?

Fast food?!!! Are you kidding!!! Doesn't anybody cook anymore?!!! Too much fat, too much sodium!! Even in subway it's hard to have a good tasting sandwich if you have to watch all the carbs and fat. I'd rather cook at home where I have control. Haven't had fast food for5 years!

Type1Lou 2011-10-01 12:01:34 -0500 Report

Subway will make you a salad instead of a sub. I love their grilled chicken and spinach combo. By going the salad route, you keep the carbs lower.

redcamel 2011-09-29 23:31:41 -0500 Report

I only eat fast food if I have to work late or run out of food at home. If you stop eating FF for a month or so and then go back to it the food tastes weird like not real. The reason is the food at home is real and tastes real. Just basic food that you prepare yourself.

ston3xc 2011-09-30 12:46:09 -0500 Report

That's right. Most fast food is fast because it's deep-fried. I do like the fact that alot of places are offering healthier options but you still have to watch and be aware.

Subway for sure. I like their veggie with monteray jack cheddar toasted, and all the veggies they have with vinegar and oil or sometimes just without dressing. I eat half with some fruit and my BG stays pretty even(crossing my fingers).

Corner Bakery (good dinner size salads and the best angel food muffins), Panera and Au Bon Pain (between 5-6 pm, they sell all of their baked goods half price. They also have sandwiches, soups and salads for lunch). I also like the seafood louie and frozen yogurt at Macy's (not in the same meal).

James we've been talking (below) about what an inspiration you are, but I don't think you know it, 'cause you haven't acknowledged it. ;-) Mara

AuntieM234 2011-09-26 20:49:49 -0500 Report

Well, I like Subway's tuna sandwiches on whole wheat, with lots of onions and whatever veggies are available. I get a foot long, cut in half, and have it at two meals. I tested it first to see if it was okay. It was/is; I didn't spike within an hour and after two hours, my BG was two points lower than when I began eating it.

I've had the same success with Taco Bell; two crunchy tacos and a green burrito.

Those aren't necessarily my favorite places to eat, but I really like the food I've mentioned and some of the other places' food didn't fit for me. ;-) Mara

jayabee52 2011-09-26 21:01:26 -0500 Report

I have been afraid of subway because of the bread. I have to stay away from Taco bell because I have to avoid cheese due to my kidney disease. Do you realize that most all resturaunts use a lot of cheese in their dishes? I didn't until I had to avoid eating cheese. And I really loved to eat cheese.

Type1Lou 2011-10-01 12:05:33 -0500 Report

James, you can avoid the bread at Subway by opting for a salad instead of a sub. I have a friend who is not diabetic but is allergic to all foods/condiments related to the onion family. Subway is one place where we can both eat safely and follow our diets, so it's our lunch place of choice when we are out and about.

jayabee52 2011-10-01 13:48:50 -0500 Report

A friend has given me a subway gift card. I'll have to use that for a salad there.
I really had it in my mind that subway = subs = bread. I'll look into it!

AuntieM234 2011-09-27 16:16:34 -0500 Report

I'm so sorry you can't eat cheese. Its one of my very favorite things. American and cheddar are mainly what I eat. I love a snack of cheese and saltine crackers. Six saltines are 15g, so 1 carb. It works well on this low carb high protein thing I'm copying from you.

I feel the tuna and all the veggies on the sandwich must nullify the effects of what carbs are in the wheat roll on which its served. After all, half a foot-long roll equals, IMO, about two carb servings. I don't do it more than once or twice a month, and it is the ONLY sandwich I ever have there. (I refuse to eat white bread of any kind.)

BTW, James, I'm soooo very pleased about my good fortune in meeting you and hearing about your control without meds for the D. I was taking three 850mg Metformin tabs daily, with meals. On August 26, I decided to see what I could do about exercising that same control. Since then, I've only had four Metformin tabs! I am VERY pleased, to say the least. I sure have gone through a lot of test strips though, as you know, I'm sure. ;-) Mara

Thank you Lou and Mara! Sometimes I don't feel inspirational. Sometimes I wish I could do more. So thank you both for your very kind words. You both are inspirations to many others too!

AuntieM234 2011-10-01 18:11:11 -0500 Report

You've practically made it your life's work to help others, James. And its working! Had I not met you, I would have been content to continue with the Metformin; oblivious to the possibilities! I must admit that my PCP had planted the seed with some comments he had been making, but it was you whose enthusiasm, confidence, and guidance are responsible for germinating that seed and making it flourish! ;-) Mara

Ok, don't shoot me, but once in a great while I just gotta have a quarter pounder with cheese and a small fry! I take all the excess bun away, till all that's left is exactly what's on the burger, and then give lots of fries to the dogs! I have unsweetened tea with it, and I'm good to go for many months again! So, Mickey D's is my favorite! We don't go anywhere else fast!

redcamel 2011-09-29 23:37:52 -0500 Report

Sophie I used to work at Mickey Ds. No horror stories but EVERYTHING they serve is cooked in grease. With enough salt to sink a battleship. They are just now trying to clean up their act with better food after getting their arches slapped over the kids meal. Also they dont recycle and 90% of their waste can be recycled cardboard etc. The amount of trash from one place is staggering.

granniesophie 2011-09-30 09:58:19 -0500 Report

So did I, but a craving is a craving, and it isn't very often!! And I don't think I am gonna die from an occasional craving :) I am good otherwise, and do what I should, and have given up all my other vices, so gotta be bad once in a while :)

pixsidust 2011-09-26 20:28:16 -0500 Report

I love Subway breakfast sandwiches. I order mozzarella cheese, egg white & steak, on flat bread because it holds more veggies. Load those veggies on and add a splash of chipolte mayonaise. Then I get home and slide it out of the flat bread and onto a plate. The egg acts as a tortilla at this point. My dogs like the bread and I eat the filling.

Denny's is good about their breakfast selections. They will trade eggs to egg whites, bacon to turkey bacon, pancakes to a whole wheat pancake and offer sugar free syrup. Sure it has Carbs but a whole lot less than the real thing and a tasty treat.

At the burger places, I am like James and toss the bread and never never have fries
