I got information from a Doctor by way of a friend that she should take Cinnamon. She told me the whole story how it dropped her sugar too low since she is NOT Diabetic, so she went on Mulberry instead , she encouraged me to try the Cinnamon as her other friend did with great results. She was going to be put on the pump and so she tried the cinnamon and now she no longer needs the pump. I started the Cinnamon 2 weeks ago and my sugar went from 200's in the am to 90 to 102. I was taking insulin 5 times the strength of Lantus and Humalog called Humulin-R U500 I am not taking 50% less insulin AM and PM my endroconalagist will be surprised when I see him next week. I myself am astonished. Try it you may find it works for you too!

Week 1—Take 1/4 tsp which equalls 1 - 500mg table Take 3 times a day
Week 2 —Take 1/4 tsp twice a day
Week 3— and there after—- 1 -1/4 tsp every day

If you berp it up it taste like apple pie ! ( a little humor there but true)

As I said to Bonnie, if you're taking the baking/powder version of cinnamon, you might try capsules. Cinnamon capsules are available (or should be) in your grocer's natural foods aisle. Capsules are easier to digest with drinking water or whatever beverage and no burping. I've taken it for less than a week and have seen a wonderful reduction in my numbers. I take one 500 mg capsule twice a day along with my metformin (also twice a day) and have seen my sugars drop from 191 to 105. Fenugreek seeds in capsules are also good for lowering blood sugars.

Are we allowed to post links to websites where we have bought supplements? I have one website where I get my ceylon cinnamon supplements, and they are wonderful. Even though they are one of the few that sells true cinnamon supplements, they are not unreasonably priced.

jayabee52 2011-09-30 18:02:33 -0500 Report

Howdy heather
I have posted links for various websites and haven't had them deleted for violation of terms of use. As long as someone does not have a vested interest or get some kind of compensation for recommending a site, it is OK. I believe. What Alliance health doesn't want is (1) someone who spams the whole site with links somewhere else (2) folks who are independent representatives for some MLM sales organization selling their new miracle cure for diabetes.

I, for one would be interested in learning where you get your ceylon cinnamon suppliments. I control my BG numbers by what I eat (or don't eat) and occasionally need some help with that. If this works for me it would be great.

This is what I was told on how to take it. 1/4 tsp = 500 mg capsule

Week 1——Take 1/4 tsp three times a day
Week 2——Take 1/4 tsp two times a day

After that take once a day.

Hope this helps, and as every one says it doesn't always work for everyone but you won't know until you try it. One friend suggested putting 1/4 tsp on a half apple with a bit of sweetner and put in the microwave for 45 seconds, I would use for a sweetner Agave it is like a syrup found in the healh section of your grocery, it is better for you than the powdered sweetner and it taste great. Kinda like maple syrup. God Bless you and yours too. Bonnie

You are so right Heather. Glad you brought this up. Something I was unaware of. I find mine at a local Indian grocery, but have also bought online from Spice House.
Don't use decorative cinnamon that is mostly seen at Holiday time. It is not food grade cinnamon. Not meant for human consumption.

HeatherHall 2011-09-29 09:55:57 -0500 Report

You should be careful about which kind of cinnamon that you use. Cassia cinnamon has a high amount of coumarin in it, which is NOT good for you. Ceylon cinnamon has a MUCH lower amount of coumarin in it. This is straight from my doctor, not some crazy website. He told me that he has seen good results with cinnamon, but to spring the extra money for ceylon cinnamon instead. I hope this helps. :O)

Be careful with the artificial sweetner it is bad for you truely, it causes an aray of health issues. Try Agave Sweetner from the health areas in your grocery store, I heard it was better for you. I used it for quite awhile and really liked it . It looks like syrup in bottle, tastes sweet but not too sweet.

Cinnamon has been the subject of many studies and I am attaching one of many articles on the findings:

However I have also read articles which state that cinnamon has absolutely no effect on glucose.

Perhaps like with anything, there are people who find improvement with a certain vitamin or supplement that does nothing for others. I've been taking cinnamon tablets and not noticing anything better or worse; but, I'd hate to stop and find it was working.

Taken the right way it should work. Like all medicines ( not that cinnamon is a drug) you need to get it into your system that iswhy the 3 times a day first week, twice a day the secnd and then once a day. I am on the once a day and I will now be taking 1000 mg capsules a day. Hope it works for you.

Good for you at least you can say you tried it, use Agave sweetner from the health food section in your grocery, its great not too sweet and certainly not a powdered sweetner that is unhealthy for you. nnie

For Cinnamon Flavoring in Tea, Coffee, oatmeal & other cooked cereals, use small pieces of stick cinnamon. Stick cinnamon available online from spice vendors, Indian groceries, and some Hispanic product displays (Bada Brand) in many grocery stores. Start by using a 1" piece in boiling water for tea or cooked cereal.

Sounds Great I will try it in my oat meal, do you discard the cinnamon stick after the oalmeal is cooked? Or does it cook down?? Bonnie

Gracie40 2011-09-29 09:17:23 -0500 Report

No it does not cook down. I toss it out after using. Cinnamon sticks are actually the bark of one of 2 trees: the Cinnamon tree or the Cassia tree. For the small amount of cinnamon one gets in steeping the stick for a tea or in cooked items, I doubt that it would affect bg much. But oh, the flavor is luscious. And flavor is so important.

Ok this souds a little strange, but willing to try this! My sugars are high all day long and doc has me taking 1 more unit of Lantus and decreasing my ratio to figure out how much insulin I need. Is this the regular cinnamon from the spice section of stores you are using?

Bonnie K.
Bonnie K. 2011-09-28 12:07:23 -0500 Report

I buy the 500 mg tabs of cinnamon in the pharmacy, You can use the same idea with the spice cinnamon 1/4 tsp = 500 mg. I was on lantus nd humalog at the same time and it wasn't working for me so they put me on Humulin R U500 it is 5 times the strength of the others and it worked I started at 5 units and still ended at 20 units Now since I started on the cinnamon and Jenny craig dieting my insulin is 10 units AM and around 12 or 13 units PM so it is going down I am so glad and I hope it works for you too. If you don't want to take the capsules just sprinkle the 1/4 tsp o what ever you eat 3 times a day the first week, twice the second and then once there after, Some say they still take 1000 mg capsules once a day which iswhat I am going to do too. A friend told me to sprinkle the cinnamon on half an apple ith a bit of sweetner and put in microwave for 45 seconds and it is like a pie. I have to try that too. Sounds Yummy. Good Luck and let me know if it works for you.

lacat87 2011-09-28 12:37:35 -0500 Report

Thanks Bonnie K. for replying to me! I will first try the spice to see if it helps and then the tablets if not. I feel like I'm in my own category because I had my pancreas removed with the islet cells transplanted in my liver Jan. 2010 in Charleston, SC. Pretty new surgery here. I was # 25 for this surgery. So I don't take as much insulin as someones who comes to diabetes the usual way.1/3 of my insulin cells were good to be transplanted. As a result of my surgery, I lost a lot of weight that I didn't need to loose. So while I'm trying to manage my insulin I'm also trying to gain weight. Not too much success with the gaining of weight, tho. I was also put on Lipitor to protect my heart from the diabetes. Have you heard of this? My insurance company suggested it. I also was told to get my eyes tested with a Diabetic Eye Exam and a P.A.D. test on my legs. All 2 tests suggested by my insurance company! Glad they're looking out for me, cuz my doctor never suggested it.

Gracie40 2011-09-29 09:29:41 -0500 Report

It is about time insurance companies worked for us. Mine also suggested a P.A.D. test on my lower extremities. BTW, my cholesterol is fine, but my MD put me on a generic statin drug like Lipitor to protect my heart. As Bonnie says, one can get muscle pain from some statin drugs. If you develop it, don't let it go. Be informed and tell your doc what is up. Tell him you want to change to something else. If money is a problem, by all means ask for some kind of generic. I am on pravastatin— a generic form of Pravachol. Best of Luck to you. Gracie

I could give you half of my weight girl no problem ha ha. I too was on lipitor and found just last week that my pain was always so bad at night and I wondered why just at night and found one of the side effect of Lipitor is muscle pain. I mean it was so awful, so I quit taking it after 15 years andnow the muscle pain is vertually gone. Since the neuropathy keeeps me on pins and needles already it was a welcome relief. I asked for a generic form like Lipitor, although Lipitor does not have a generic drug form yet they gave me LOSARTAN /HCTZ and it works great and no problems at all. Besides that becaue it is a Tear 1 drug which costs me nothing with my insurance, not a penny for a 3 month supply. Lipitor was costing me $113.00 every 3 months. Stay on this site we will all look out for you, as well as every one of us tha logs in. Good Luck Hon Bonnie

I was also told to eat Glucerna, but the mini bars raise my blood sugar. So frustrating! I mean they are made for diabetics, but for me they do the opposite to me. Anyone else have this problem?

Yes I too found that glucerna was no help and it raised my sugar tremendously. I never use it anymore.

lacat87 2011-09-28 12:39:23 -0500 Report

I was really surprised by this. The company claims their products help with not raising blood sugar too fast. Told my doc. this too, and she shook her head no, as in it doesn't help. Thru the rest of them away.

I use cinnamon on my oatmeal but buy the Saigon Cinnamon which is a lot higher quality. I have also added it to hot tea but it is hard to dissolve it in the water. I have to watch though or it will give me heartburn which is not good.

Sorry to hear about that, but I am sure she thought she was doing good for you. Let me give you a great sloppy Joe recipe, that you can have and is as easy as 10 minutes. Brown 1/2 LB of Hamberger with or without 1/2 small onion. Lean hamberger is best not as greasy. Drain if needed. Mix 1 - 8oz can hunts tomato sauce and 2 (only) TBSP of Heinz chili sauce. Pour overBrowned meat mixture and serve on a bun or bread, I sprinkle triple cheese on top not much and it is delicious. Makes 4 open face sandwiches.—— If you want a great little pizza Buy 1 package of 3 small Mama Mary's pizza ready crust. make hamberger mix the same as sloppy joes only this time spread a handful of shredded motzarella cheese on top of crusts, top with meat mixture and bake according to pizza package. It's like 10 minutes Makes all three pizzas. My treat to you.

I look at sweet rolls as great looking but it's like buying a slab of poison that could kill me so I stay away, or if I really have to have it, which I don't I take a tiny piece of the samples and then share that with my husband because even a tiny on your tongue can satisfy the need. Have the coffee and the tiny taste same difference and it satisfies.
