I was just diagnosed with Type 2 about two weeks ago. I am having crazy dreams where I am eating candy or sweets and then remember I am diabetic and feel so guilty and get sick. Last night in my dream I ate 3 dozen boxes of doughnuts. I made sure I got all the sugar off the boxes. I wake up frantic and out of breath. I wonder if I'm losing my mind. Has anyone else ever experienced anything like this? It keeps waking me up!!!

I work in healthy treats & occasional treats as well. Prepackaged sizes help me. I work the carbs into my daily carbs count. Cocoa roasted almonds from Emerald, rice crispy treat all natural frozen yogurt (we have local shops), DQ makes TINY blizzard now!!! Flips pretzels. I can't have candy with sugar alcohol in it! Tears me up something TERRIBLE!! I eat very healthy & work these in. Sometimes something more healthy like the cocoa almonds every night for a week. You also need to find what works for your blood sugar. I remember feeling like you after I was diagnosed. I think it comes from telling yourself you CAN'T have things anymore and self control issues. I never thought I could get past that! Here I am on the other side! You can have anything but work it into your meal plan. If you deprive yourself you make it harder. Just don't have those 3 boxes and take it a day at a time. Best wishes…

Howdy Joyce!
Did you post this in the wrong place by mistake? It seems out of place. The original post was about dreaming about eating "bad foods"

jladytiger1979 2011-09-26 21:17:43 -0500 Report

I was just trying to help in the sense of satisfying the "bad food" urges she is dreaming about I guess…I'm starting to ramble in my old age. Lol

Your dreams seem to be triggered by the fact that you were just diagnosed with Type 2. Hopefully, they will be fewer and farther between as you "come to grips" with your new situation. For me, I finished college a log time ago and have been retired for 2 years. Recently I have had several dreams where I am back in school and finals are coming up, but I forgot what a couple of my classes were, where they were or what time or day I was suppose to go to them. Since I have no intentions of going back to school, I have no idea where this is all coming from. I just wish I was dreaming of donuts or cakes or something else that I like. Best of luck!!

jayabee52 2011-09-26 01:09:18 -0500 Report

I do that too. Occasionally I will dream that I am still in grad school, and have blown off a series classes and won't graduate with my class. I get a bit anxious. I also dream about workplaces I have been but the features of the building have been rearranged. And I have to give a presentation, but I have not yet prepared the speech and it's only a few minutes till I go to the podium. I am usually quite relieved when I wake up.

lol cheryl !That is too much! When I crave sweets I get diet butterscotch Werther's hard candy. yum.

dIDYMUS 2011-09-26 12:16:37 -0500 Report

I mentioned to my diabetic counselor that I sometimes ate a Werther's sugar free candy. She said that it had sugar alcohol. I didn't pursue it at that time, but still don't know what she meant. I also sometimes eat a small piece of homemade Angel food cake, with a few strawberries and real whipped creme. I suppose that is completely out of bounds too!

jayabee52 2011-09-26 19:16:26 -0500 Report

A person may probably eat 1 sugar free candy every half day. But if I eat 2 or 3 in rapid succession, my bowels act up. I can even get the "hershey squirts". Here's something from Spark people about sugar alcohols: http://www.sparkpeople.com/resource/nutrition...

Angelfood cake is one of the better choices for cakes, but that being said be aware that a 1/12th serving size can still contain 30 to 35 g of carbs in the cake alone, so portion control is important. The strawberries are a better choice than some other fruits as they have fewer carbs in them, 1/4 c of strawberries is 1.8 g of carbs so again, portion control is important. For whipped cream the carb count for 2 Tbsp of heavy cream, the kind one would make into whipped cream would be 0.8 g See Bella online's Low carb site: http://www.bellaonline.com/subjects/4486.asp for carb counts.

dIDYMUS 2011-09-26 21:04:35 -0500 Report

Thanks for the 2 really good sites. I don't eat Werthers every day, but sometimes I get it in my head that I have to have something sweet after dinner. Luckily, foods don't affect my stomach or digestion very much. I like to make the Angel Food myself, since everything is on the box. Yup, i t has 32g of carbs, and 23g of sugar. Not much else except 310mg of sodium. I don't really know what is in already made Angel Food. But after reading lots of labels, I decided that it was the best cake (so far). I neglected to mention that I use Reddi wip. Used to use Cool Whip, but heard somewhere that it had oils in it. Reddi has 15 cal. and 1g of carbs. Serviing size is 2 tbls. A skimpy little desert, but better than nothing. I need more (lots) of time to really sink my teeth into carb control.

Jan8 2011-09-26 18:25:33 -0500 Report

sugar alcohols absorb more slowley than sugar. some of them can gve diarrhea Manitol but you have to eat lots of it. I think Angel food cake sounds yummy esp with strawberries and cool whip light.Real whipped cream may have more fat and sugar content but you don't have to give up what you love. Just eat smaller amounts. This diiet isn'y a punishment. It's just healthier ways of earing. you will find out what you can and cannot tolerate . It takes a while to know. i

dIDYMUS 2011-09-26 21:15:59 -0500 Report

Thanks. I now know more about sugar alcohols than I ever wanted to! I really do eat smaller portions, although I never eat donuts, but a big old brownie sure does appeal to me. I will try to think of this as a healthy way of eating, instead of a punishment. We were raised to eat healthy. No fast food when I was growing up. McDonalds got here when I was in highschool, and I never liked it and still don't. I sometimes feel sorry for my husband. He really didn't sign on for this, but he is a good sport and never complains. I just buy him ice creme and he is good. I like Subway though. I usually have a spinich salad with a whole bunch of the veges. But then it comes to the dressing. I love Caesar, but try to have a lite Italian with me. Turkey burgers instead of hamburgers - the list goes on and on.

It's difficult to grasp that certain foods should be out of limits for the rest of your life. You were just diagnosed. It takes time to re-train your food intake. But it doesn't mean you have to suffer for it. An occasional donut may be alright, check with your doctor. After a time you will get to understand your body more. But please be careful and mindful. I had a stroke the one and only morning I had 3 bavarian creme donuts. The stroke was caused by diabetes and I didn't know I had diabetes. Lucky for me I worked across a Doctors' Hospital at the time and was immediately taken care of. Be patient with yourself but don't take it lightly. A lot of diabetics can control their diabetes following a good healthy menu. In time you will see what works for you. Good health to you.

Type1Lou 2011-09-23 12:04:39 -0500 Report

The good part of dreaming about these taboo foods is that it doesn't actually raise your blood sugars…at least I don't think it does. Just like smelling fresh bread baking doesn't have any carbs or calories…it just makes it harder to resist them…sometimes the mind is a terrible thing!

SEEKINGHELP 2011-09-22 21:39:01 -0500 Report

I understand.. Before I was diagnosed as a Diabetic in 2004, I very rarely eat any sweets. My down fall was fruit juices and bread, so i was so upset to find out.. Now every day is a struggle in picking the right food, I dream of eating bags of cookies and donuts.. And licking the bag dry.. lol I feel like a heroin addict sometime..

Maybe this is a bad choice of words, but doesn't it about kill you that stuff you were raised as being good for you, good breads and fruit juices, are some of the main things that drive your BG #'s up?

Jim I was made to eat beef liver and heart. I was forced to finish what was on my plate because someone in China was starving. Lets top this with "It is better to be fat then skinny"

jayabee52 2011-09-25 12:17:18 -0500 Report

Beef heart? OH I LOVE IT! (liver not so much) Loved it boiled and then cooled and sliced. Put a little shake of salt on it, MMMMM Good eating! Beef tongue too. Loved that cooked and shredded. Folks who ate it at my house never knew what it was unless I told them (afterward). To them it was just shredded beef.

I totally agree with you Jim, I was told eat all your food, (ex.. ham hocks, rolls with butter and syrup, mac and cheese, peach cobbler) And wash it all down with whole milk.. Now just looking at most of it my BG# goes up..lol

My son went shopping today. When I looked in the frige there is a half gallon of orange juice yikes. When my dr was telling me to lower blood sugars and lost weight I dutifully ate lots of fruit and drank large glasses of juice, so good and so healthy. Foiled again, now that carton of juice is mocking me. Sadly I am a chocoholic.

Yep I have wierd dreams occasionally too. I dream of my former wife and then mix her up with my bride Jem somehow. It is wild what goes on in my dream life. And yes, my dreams are sometimes so INTENSE they wake me.

I quit smoking about 11 yrs. ago and I still have dreams every once in while where I am smoking. I light up and take a drag, just like I used to. Even had dreams where I was going to the store and bought a pack! I just chalk it up to reliving a habit that was a big part of my life those many years ago.

dingogranny 2011-09-23 23:08:57 -0500 Report

I still have those smoking dreams occasionally too, and when I quit smoking I wasn't enjoying it anymore, but in the dreams it always feels so enjoyable!

Okay, a real answer. Still no, at least I can't remember any, but that is a different condition! My dreams are all over the map, especially since I am at the beginning of a separation/divorce. If I were to do a doughnut dream, it would never be 3 dozens boxes of 12 per box! My dream would be very specific. First, I would have to assess the value of the doughnut. Even now, when I sin and have one, it has to meet my requirements. First, it has to have coconut on it. Now I don't mean white icing with coconut sprinkle on it, I mean coconut. Next, it has to be filled with cream. Enough cream that you have to cup your hand under it to catch the overflow on every bite. Next, chocolate icing, now that can be topped with the coconut.
So a cream filled, topped with chocolate icing, with coconut. Try getting that at Dunkin Doughnuts, or anywhere else. Then it is worth the sugar, the calories and the guilt! Needless to say, I do not do doughnuts very often!

mebetty 2011-09-24 16:30:42 -0500 Report

My answer to this is Almond Joy - only half. The other half the next day. :)
I had a stroke after eating 3 bavarian creme donuts in one morning. It was then that I learned I had diabetes. The stroke was secondary to diabetes. I haven't had one since.

God blesses me in good times and in rough times. This may not be His choice or mine, but it is going to happen and I will come out the other end and he will still be my God. As far as the sweet roll goes, it doesn't meet my qualifications! LOL Now if before you rolled it you layered it with coconut, then when it was done you filled it with cream, then topped it with chocolate, it would be fine, even with the cinnamon and sugar you normally put into it! I am sorry Cheryl Lynn, your dreams will now be full of nightmares about this specially made sweet roll!

MEGriff1950 2011-09-22 13:40:52 -0500 Report

Jim I can make that sweet roll exactly to your specifications. I am a good old fashioned country cook. Not a miracle worker but do know my sweet roll doughs.

MEGriff1950 2011-09-22 11:26:56 -0500 Report

Cheryl Lynn do not feel alone in these dreams. Yes sugar is very bad for us but if you have a meal plan on rare occassions you may add one of your sweets part of your carb count for a meal. Last night I drank a milkshake with dinner, but my bg this am was still only 91. Since getting on a good meal plan designed for me I do not crave the sweets like I used to if I make sure to include fruit and veggies in my meals. When we eat refined sugar it raises our lipids.
Enjoy your dreams and do not feel guilty. Sweets when you are dreaming will not raise your blood sugars or harm you in any way. I think for right now you are too worried about doing something wrong. Soon you will be able to relax and not worry.
Please pass along one of those donuts next time. LOL
Here is another thought. I shut off my tv dish several years ago but I remember all of those commercials for foods and sweets. They would drive me nuts and send me to the kitchen. Also while waiting in the drs. office all those magazines with food ads and recipes are just too much. I especially like the articles Lose 30 pounds in a month but on each side of the articles are ads for chocolate, donuts, fast food joints etc. Then when shopping you get to the check out stand and what do you see beside you? Candy?? We are bombarded with temptations where ever we turn.
You will win over the beast,
God bless,
