A Heads Up

Hey Everyone. I have been a member of DC for a couple of years and something has been bugging me here of late.
I have seen alot of salespeople and jokesters come and go from our beloved site and Ive learned to recognize phony discussions, started either to move product OR elicit sympathy/emotion from our members.
Id like to share some pointers and hope other long-time members will share the benefit of their experience, too.
With salespeople, they will start a discussion and mention a product/website time and again within. They may also start a flame-out with a member/s in order to attract maximum exposure to the discussion.
With jokesters, they will attempt to stir strong emotions in members with stories that could be ripped straight from the headlines-and often are.
Im not suggesting to be wary of everyone but a little healthy skepticism goes a long way and eventually these types weed themselves out.
Ultimately, what they manage to do is take the focus off our real struggles and that is never okay! Lots of Love to all of you.

I'm late to this discussion, but just wanted to say thanks for the heads up. I tend to be very naive and just believe what people tell me. I'm always getting teased at work. They tell me stories and i just take it at face value! So it's nice to know someone is out there on the lookout! Thanks a bunch and keep up the good work! Blessings

I am wondering, Renee, if you could try to write up the gist of the original post and submit it to the Administration and have the tech people put it up to replace what was taken down?

dietcherry 2011-09-30 18:44:01 -0500 Report

Now thats an idea; Jeanette only said via messaging that it was mistakenly deleted and they were working on getting it back up but may be unable to. I will shoot her a message and ask! Thanx James-thats using your noggin!!! :)

I have only been at this site for a week and its good to see their are people watching out for the rest of us. This seems to be a nice little community of caring people in which I hope to become a part of. I would also like to offer special thanks to these people, MewElla, JralphsCA, SloaneCA, dietcherry, GabbyPA, jayabee52, Amy TenderichPA and John CrowleyCA. who were among the first to contact me. I have no idea where you find the time to be of such great service but thanks. Please continue with your conversation on scams and spammers. Your goal is to help and theirs is money gee I wonder what should be removed your conversation or their profile?

The decision by DC to censor this dietcherry discussion is perplexing and disturbing. Is DC willing to share with us specifically why it deemed fit to delete this warning about spammers? From my recollection, there was NOTHING objectionable about it and it was particularly helpful to legitimate newcomers. At the very least, it will provide us with the info needed to avoid further censorship.

For sure there must be a reacson as to why this was banned. I would like to know exactly why. Dietcherry so does seem to be a hugh part of this. What is the explnation for this . If it was an opps, then IK expect to be contacted with the results.

dietcherry 2011-09-30 18:48:54 -0500 Report

Hey Lou! It was an OOPS! on the part of administrators; they may get it back up!

Type1Lou 2011-10-01 11:51:06 -0500 Report

Thanks Renee!…if I'd read further down into the discussion before posting my indignation I would have seen your explanation…but, since it was an "OOPS!", DC should be able to restore it and un-OOPS it. I also like James' suggestion as an alternative if they are unable to retrieve the original post.

Geez! I'm glad it's possibly just a glitch in the system. With all of the dirtbags trolling this site you'd be the last person to have a post removed for a TOS violation.

dietcherry 2011-09-29 12:13:40 -0500 Report

According to Jeanette it was a mistake but I have a feeling the salesman who was posting here (and his posts have since been removed because some of us flagged them) probably flagged the Discussion heading so it got deleted. Thats what Im thinking happened! :)

jayabee52 2011-09-28 18:41:44 -0500 Report

LoL! It was a post where Renee (Dietcherry) posted a warning, mostly to folks who are relatively new to DC about spammers and snake oil salespeople who come here from time to time.

AuntieM234 2011-09-28 03:32:14 -0500 Report

I certainly hope they get this straightened out! No way would Renee violate the TOU!

Well thank you for the vote of confidence Mara! lol I hope I never violate it but you never know-theres always tomorrow! heehee
Anyway it doesnt look like theyre going to get it corrected so I was thinking of starting a new Discussion if anyone thinks theres anything left to add. What say?

Oh wow! I just read an inbox message from Jeanette, our Community Manager. She says they believe it was caused by an error in the system and that it shouldnt have been deleted and it was thought to be a very good Discussion. They are working on fixing it but may be unable to. Thanks for A Heads Up, Jeanette! ;)

I am rather surprised that this original post has been removed due to Terms of use violations. IMO it was a good and valuable discussion piece, and it got 50 likes.

I agree and was wondering if anyone else has been getting more phone calls than usual from places with "diabetic" in the name., I don't know if it's coming via what I have written here or if I'm just "lucky" (tongue in cheek)

dietcherry 2011-09-30 09:21:07 -0500 Report

Is your phone # registered with The National Do Not Call Registry? Doing so will dramatically reduce solicitation calls.
Their # is: 1-888-382-1222 and you must call from the # you are wanting to register. You may also register online at: donotcall.gov and you must provide an email address for confirnation.
Your # will stay in the registry for 5 years, until it is disconneced, or until you remove it from the registry. After 5 years, you may renew your registration.

Haven't noticed a upswing in telephone solicitation calls…but, then again, we've been gone for a few days. There seems to be an increase in some e-mail offers, but they usually end up in my junkmail and are easily deleted.

Good morning! I JUST signed up for the sight. I DO NOT have diabetes. I am however involved in a relationship with a very sweet lady who is borderline diabetic. I have several questions and would like to learn more. I have searched all over the net and read a ton of info but still do not completely understand. Thanks ahead of time for any answers you share.
She is a wonderful lady with borderline type 2. She exercises daily and has a very demanding schedule at work. She has only had a couple of issues since we I've known her and one occured last evening. Could someone just give me some info?
She got the shakes really bad and had to take sugar immediately. Then HAD to eat something immediately. I'm afraid she is overdoing it as far as excercise, work and then not taking in enough calories or carbs. She is very smart and tries very hard to control her challenges but it just doesn't seem to be enough. Thanks again.
BTW, not a sales rep!! This is not a bogus story to get attention.

mebetty 2011-09-24 16:21:47 -0500 Report

a good rule to keep in mind is that it is very important to eat within every 4 hours - small quantities. If she exercises on a regular basis, she should include a protein drink immediately after, but should never go more than 4 hours between regular meals. It is also advisable to snack between meals to prevent sugar lows. This could be almonds, yogurt, snack bar, etc. She is a lucky lady to have someone watch over her. Good health to both of you.

dietcherry 2011-09-24 10:28:14 -0500 Report

Hello and welcome to DC!! We can clearly see your post is sincere and not bogus! Occasionally we have posters that are just here to advertise a product but they disguise their real motive and the fact that they are actually salespeople. This is their way of getting around our sites' Terms of Use which restricts advertising to certain rules.
Its tougher to recognize the phony Discussions posted just to mess with our emotions. They dont happen often, though.

jayabee52 2011-09-23 18:56:22 -0500 Report

Howdy CCtider! WELCOME to DC!
Sounds like she had a low Blood Glucose reaction. When a Person with Diabetes' blood glucose goes too low they start shaking and sweating and sometimes gets goofy or starts talking nonsense, some will even start to have siezures. Each PWD reacts a bit differently. Eventually if the low is not treated with a fast acting carb. The PWD can fall into a coma, and if the low continues the PWD may even die.

The treatment for that isto test with her glucometer and if low (below 70) get a fast acting carbohydrate into her quickly. There is a "rule of 15s" which is useful to follow in treating lows. Take 15 grams of a fast acting carb, and wait for 15 min and then test again. If it is not above 70, then follow the proceedure again until it is over 70.

The reason you test before you give the treatment is you don't want to give her a treatment for a low if she is not low. My bride used to have what I called "false lows" because she had extremely high BG numbers and when she came down more toward normal readings, she'd sometimes experience the symptoms of a low, but not actually be low. She would just have to ride out the feeling. When she'd do that, I would test her every 30 min to 1 hr to make sure she wasn't actually going low. That was a time when I needed to hug her and reassure her that she wasn't going low. (I had to do the testing on her since she was blind)

A fast acting carb could be a glucose tablet (available from pharmacies) or even a couple teaspoons of sugar in water, or a little tube of gel frosting, or reguilar candy, or a glass of fruit juice. There are a lot of things which could be used to counteract a low.

Good ror you, cc! You are wanting to learn about her challenges. She is fortunate to have someone in her life who cares enough to do that

Blessings to you and yours

mebetty 2011-09-24 16:11:47 -0500 Report

thanks for sharing james. Rule of 15s…good gauge. You have to give it time to see what the reaction is before you can continue…

jayabee52 2011-09-25 06:11:05 -0500 Report

I learned that the hard way with my bride Jem when she was alive. She would have lows and would eat like a madwoman until she felt better. But by that time she had over eaten on carbs and her BG numbers would be in the statosphere. She rode the BG roller coaster, up and down. It certainly didn't do her body any good.

We also had to watch her for what I called "false lows". She'd be in the 250 to 350 range, for a day or so (when she was on prednisone for her Lupis or RA) and then she'd come down closer to normal. She started having low reactions and she'd want to eat ravenously. I had to stop her to test her BG before she ate so to make sure she actually was low. That was hard to do because she'd almost always have those feelings of lows when we were in bed. They would wake her up but I would still be asleep. Often she didn't want to wake me. I pleaded with her to wake me so I could take her BG reading (she was totally blind - so I had to read her meter for her). When I discovered she wasn't low we tested every half hour to hour, depending on how close to a low she was. If she got low we would follow the rule of 15s.

It is sad that people can't be part of a group that sincerely cares for each others well being. I love my friends I have made on this site. I would not have had the courage to face the facts of pre-diabetes without everyones helpful advice. With the things people helped me with I have been able to get my sugar back in check on most days. I am hoping to avoid further health issues by staying in touch with those who know more than I do about this beastly disease.

Well I guess I'm guilty…since I am a salesman and have been all my career..(now retired). But the thing I'm selling is the need to control your Blood Glucose which is represented by an A1C in the 6's. I've been lucky to be able to accomplish that over the years and have, as a result, managed to avoid complications. For example, my wife and I are in the middle of spending a month in Italy. (We do HomeExchange so it's very cost effective—you simply live in some else's home while they live in yours). Believe me, if I couldn't walk, get around, etc, then Pompei or the 400 steps down to the beach to swim where we're staying on the Amalfi coast would not be possible. I guess I can't help myself, (even though there's no commission involved), check out their web site: www.homeexchange.com …:>)
