I am finding it really hard to lose my weight. I have a thyroid condition, but I exercise 6 days a week and I still can not lose any weight. I am starting to think that it is a waste of time doing the exercises and I am finding it harder each day to start them. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hello dear friend Narelle~~Why not try for taking walks with your wonderful furry friend to keep you company. Isn't it about your spring there—maybe not, I seem to remember a snow storm down your way recently. Anyway, when the weather permits, I'm sure walks would prove beneficial. I know our lovely friend Mary (MewElla) has been successful in eliminating weight—I believe its like 75 lbs—in just that way. I'm not dissing the importance of the exercise regimen, but I've known others who've walked to build up stamina for completing their exercise regimen. Also, they've said, and I've experienced it, as well, that the more you exercise, the more you WANT to. So, I was thinking about how beautiful your place is there, and what a neat idea it would be to map out a trail. I would begin small, and keep adding time and distance until, finally, you are regularly walking a good distance. I don't know if that's how Mary did it, or not, but its working for me. I'm so sorry you're having these issues and I pray things improve quickly for you. Sending love and good wishes to you! ;-) Mara

Harlan, keep hanging in there. The weight will come off, it jsut takes some people longer to lose the weight than others. You are doing good. Keep it up.

Humm…interesting. Thanks for the reason not to exercise. I will take all of them I can get! Seriously, don't give up. My line of thinking is that you may not be losing weight, but you should still be toning your muscles. These double whammies are tough to fight. You do what you know should work and it doesn't. I know that $%^%$&*^# thyroid can really mess things up and I know weight gain is one of them, but that is my limit on thyroid knowledge. Wish you the best, my friend.

i understand exactly how you feel rellypoo. My endocrinologist added T3 .it's called cytomel and it helps kick in the synthroid or it works with it. Ask your doc if it might help you.

I envy you that you are able to exercise. I am partially disabled and am told to exercise and then my doctor meets my blank stare and says move around as much as you can but do not hurt yourself. Being 60 it is really hard to lose weight especially since I cant walk 5 miles a day like I used to. Water arobics is great and can be a lot of fun. I will allow anyone to install an indoor pool in my back yard then we can all jump in and get our exercise. Our town pool is only open 3 months during the summer, costs $5.00 a day and you are not allowed to take anything into the water to exercise with. It is unheated and filled with kids. My next choice is driving 70 to the city public pools. Water arobics gives you the cardio exercise without the hard impact on your body and no sweating. For those just starting out most drs recommend that you pace yourself. Remember when you are sitting at your computer or watching tv move your feet around, that helps to pump the muscles which help to pump the blood to them.

Thankyou for that I always swim when I visit my mother, she has an indoor pool and I do love to swim. She has the pool to help with her muscles as she has M.S.

Where do you get that? Never heard of it before. Must be from a snake bite. Did you know that Australia has more varieties of poisonous snakes than any other continent? Now N, I need to get out of here and look that up. It sounds like you are either allergic to Hash Browns (USA breakfast) or hashish (?sp), which you shouldn't have anyway. Anyway you fight many battles my friend. Hopefully you will win a few of them. Jim

Found this post again! The Hashimotos is your particular thyroid condition. According to the Mayo Clinic it sounds like a lot less fun that Diabetes. Yet you managed to have both. Remind me not to let you pick my lottery numbers!

Yeah I must have admit I do get everything thats going around but I am not too bad on the lotto winnings though

I know I need to set time for the big E, but like you i am on my feet most of the day, standing or walking or running if there is an alarm going off! When my doctor asks me what I do for exercise I tell him I live.

GabbyPA 2011-09-13 09:54:36 -0500 Report

Maybe focus on your numbers and how the exercise helps with that. I know when I worry a lot about loosing weight I don't do well. But if I am doing what I know is right, then I know it will come. My body is something I cannot fight with. It will do what it wants, but if I keep doing what I know I need to do, I will eventually prevail. Hang in there!!

Dont give up or feel bad a lot of us are in the same boat
It takes time to get it off and I have a long way to go but I will keep swinging at it
I just look at it like this it didnt take me a year to gain it so it will take more then a year to get rid of it and thats just life.
Hugs and best wishes

Why is it so easy to put on and so hard to take off?

GabbyPA 2011-09-14 17:04:15 -0500 Report

I think fat should come with a zipper so we can just step out of it like a fat suit. Wouldn't that be great? I would love it.

Hey, I know the feeling! I have an extremely hard time losing weight also. It seems I can lose about 10lbs and then nothing. I'm being tested for thyroid problems. Right now, I'm going to just try and concentrate on getting my blood sugar numbers lower. How is your diet? You might want to exercise more often/longer periods of time. Have you talked to your doctor about this?
You can also focus on how you feel after you exercise, you know, those feel good hormones that get released while you exercise.

rellypoo 2011-09-13 03:54:10 -0500 Report

My diabetes educator says my diet is spot on so I can't blame that( I wish I could) I don't have any feel good hormones after exercise. I think I need to get my bs levels lower also thankyou for your reply

I'm with you rellypoo. I've never felt good after exercise. Hot, sweaty, sore, tired… No happy endorphins… Not sure about your interests… I tell myself I need to be able to run/walk at least 5 miles in case of a Zombie apocalypse… HAHA. Really, for our safety, we should have the endurance to be able to take care of ourselves in case of an emergency/catastrophe… It'll only be harder to get into shape as we get older - might as well start now. Also… Not sure what you have for activities / interests where you are. Maybe trying to reward yourself as you go along. For instance, if you walk/exercise enough miles to cover the distance to the beach - maybe you can reward yourself with a mini-vacation. I know you said transportation is difficult. Is there anything near you that you can reward yourself with? Our shopping center/Mall is 15 miles from my house. When I walk 15 miles on the treadmill, I'm going to rewrad myself with a $10 shopping spree. It's something to distract your brain with while you're hot, sweaty, sore and tired. Hope this helps. I have been thinking about you. Hope you are feeling a little better! <3

You welcome! I don't know if I helped you or not, but it is reassuring to see other people having the same difficulties as myself. Not that I wish this on other people, but, just that I'm not alone in this. I don't think most non diabetic people understand. I still don't! It really helps being in this group!!
Anyways, God bless you! I pray that you will start to see results in your weight loss, don't give up!
