Like Jan said Peanut butter works for me. Sometimes I will have one glucose tablet if I am at like at 50, eat 1/2 cup cheerios with very little milk. Whole wheat crackers with peanut butter help!

Kersten, My diabetic nurse practitioner told me if i get a reading loer than 50 I need 3 glucose tablets. If it is below 80,I need 2 tablets. You take your glucose level every 15 minutes until you get above 80 reading. Sometimes I just make 2 rye breads with low sugar smuckers jam,and smuckers low fat peanut butter and I feel better instantly. The PB lasts longer than a quick fix for me.

Kerstin, I drink about a 1/2 cup of orange juice. There are many things you can do or take. Individual packets of honey but they don't work so go to carry in the purse. There are tubes of gel glucose that you can take, glucose tabs or they even have a flavored glucose liqued that comes in little bottles like the 5 hour energy shots you see on tv all the time. Beanut butter or just peanuts work well to. They say milk does to but I am allergic to milk so I have never tried that. God Bless You

I drink a glass of milk to bring up my bg. Also if I drink a glass of milk at bedtime I don't drop out as often.

You all have good replies. Mine drops at work when I am real busy-and that is alot. Mine usually ends up dropping around 5am at work. (I work the night shift) It is our real busy time. I carry glucose tablets-but, apple juice and graham crackers, peanut butter on crackers with milk as well. There are alot of things you can use.

Keep some packets of honey on hand that is a quick way of raising the blood sugar. I was low last night and it worked for me. I didnt eat enough for the insulin I took thought I was fine then all of a sudden I was not ok I had to eat some honey and then within 5 minutes I was starting to feel better.

Eat some protein that stays with you when you drink your juice. That will help. Do not worry protein does not stop the sugar from working. It will just help prevent a spike as you are asking about. You just want your sugar to come up to normal so drink in increments as suggested previously. Keep something with you. I start feeling a little light headed and can catch myself before I get way low. I usually can cut it off at the pass when I hit 75-80. After a drink, or eating some it goes into the 90's to 100. Nibble small things you can have through the day. It will help with cravings and keep you regulated. Its all scary but you have some good advice from some great people here! LOL

I take gluclose tablets. You can get them at rite aide or wallmart. I buy the generic ones they are only called gluclose tablets. They work wonderfully and pull you out of a low right away! They are not expensive and easy to carry. I HIGHLY recomend them! :) hope this helps! Besides they are easy to carry and have on hand all the time!

I presume you are still living so now I can say…Go to Philadelphia and get a soft pretzel. That will raise your BS and keep it there. They must have 20 carbs per pretzel. Don't ask me how I know…LOL

An apple should do it. Juice works quicker. A forbidden Coke (1/2 can) works really quick as the sugar with the carbonation gets into your blood quickly. At 50, I would be crawling on the ground, if I was lucky! Good thing about D is that some can go lower than others. I begin my malfunction at about 80. At 70 I know I need to do something and I can generally accomplish it, but I don't know how I did it. 68 was my lowest…and I have no recollection of how, when, why, or where I corrected it. I suspect that something I ate earlier finally got into my system.

I wouldn't even be able to type if mine got that low! I keep crackers (w/cheese or peanut butter) in my desk drawer just in case. Hope you're feeling better soon!

I agree with Gabby and James. You need to treat the low with a FAST-ACTING carb…fruit juice, glucose tabs, gels, liquids, sugar dissolved in water even. The sugar in these begins to be absorbed while still in your mouth. Anything (like the apple) that has to get to your stomach and be broken down will take longer to act and you can't afford that. I just recently discovered that I hadn't been treating my lows this way which caused me to eat more and more to try and get them back up and then they would then bounce sky high.

THANKS FOR THIS INFO THAT I NEEDED. I DID NOT KNOW WHAT THE DIFFERENCE WAS BETWEEN FAST AND SLOW ACTING SUGARS. AND WHY YOU HAVE TO EAT OR DRINK A FAST ACTING SUGAR. THIS WAS NEVER EXPLAINED TO ME AND WHEN I READ THIS MESSAGE THE LIGHT BULB WENT OFF IN MY HEAD THANKS AGAIN FOR THIS INFO.

Guilty! Nothing like going from 72 to 180 in less than 30 minutes.

If we could only bottle it and market it to Detroit, we'd be oh so rich and help the economy out to boot…or is that "to wheel"! Oh wheel, I'd best hush up now.

You are a really punny person! But there's nothing funny about low BG's. I've had some in the high 20's and low 30's and was surprised that I was still upright if not truly conscious. I HATE the taste of any-flavored glucose tabs, gels and liquids but then, I'm less likely to ingest them unless I really have to. I always carry them with me now. Luckily, I haven't had to treat a really bad low since I wound up in the ER in July!

One thing I use to have as a snack, is greek yogart with 12g of protein, this is used a buffer to keep my energy level up for exercising…always eat one half apple for fiber with breakfast and grab last half after the yogart as I am going to walk…But to bring up low blood sugar, I have to grab a liquid, like a o j, coke, to quickly bring it up, I test in 15 min after drinking, and if need be, drink more and retest…Low blood sugar is very scary to me and I like to jump on it quickly…

Hi Gabby, did you have a protein after the apple

Gabby
GabbyPA 2011-09-08 08:42:40 -0500 Report

Sad to say, I have never had a "low". Well, I guess it is good, but I just have never gotten numbers that low. I would not recommend protein after a low until you are at a point where you are out of danger, like in the 80's at least. Protein will help keep levels steady, but you want them rising before you stabilize them.

I HAVE NEVER HAD A LOW BEFORE EITHER AND I HOPE I NEVER HAVE TO EXPERIENCE THAT ONE. I HAD A FRIEND THAT PASSED OUT BEFORE WITH A VERY LOW AND IT WAS NOT A PRETTY SITE. NEEDLESS TO SAY WE WERE AT WORK AND HAD TO CALL 911. HER NUMBERS WERE IN THE 30'S.

Drink apple juice instead. Or orange juice. Or take a glucose tablet that equals about 15g of carbs. Then wait 15 minutes and see if you are going up.

An apple is carb, but it is also a whole food and it takes longer to work than something like juice.

jayabee52
jayabee52 2011-09-08 00:47:22 -0500 Report

the trick is following the "rule of 15s" Take 15 grams of a FAST acting carbohydrate (like orange juice) and wait for 15 min and then test your BG numbers. If your BG isn't up enough, then repeat the proceedure again until it comes up enough. SIMPLE carbs are the fastest acting.

Suggestions are if you have frosting tubes for decorating cakes, those are recommended for something like that.

Fruit juices like orange, grape, pineapple, apple will bring your BG up fast because they don't have the fiber to delay the action of the carbohydrates.
