I suggest too that you head to ER and do not waste time. Just because a meter is new does not mean it is a good meter take it with you to test. Most definately a new doctor sounds like a good ideal God be with you Margo

Hey Margo, I have learned many things since I received this life sentence. One of them is, there are many things, like spider bites, like the meds you take to counteract the spider bites, like stress to send your sugars wacko. there is an OTC med that I took either for a cold or a reaction to a bite that sent my sugars wild. Now, if you need to drop your sugar and do not have a problem with it, try 1/4 cup (not 1/4 bottle!) of Vodka. I use the flavored Vodka. Now you can take this with water, but do not take it with OJ or other juice. It will drop my BS by about 100 points in an hour, so monitor your BS every 30 minutes to see what is happening.
Now, not that I doubt you, but why do you think you had an insulin reaction at 1:30 AM? Was your BS low? If so, what did you take to counteract it? I know it scares me to death when I am in the 70's as I am barely able to function to correct it and consequently, I greatly overcompensate. With your BS at 342, I think a protein only breakfast would be in order, eggs, cheese, no bread.
Hope you are better by this time. I am just getting caught up. Jim

I tried the vodka with lime juice and some truvia. Didn't work the way I hoped. Do I have to take out the truvia and lime juice?

Yes. I tried just straight flavored vodka and it worked great for me the other night.

Ok, I am not much into the alcohol. but I am getting frustrated with my numbers right now too, so will try again. As I say, I need to experiment for at least a week to see how it works, there are so many variables. I took mine about an hour before bed. When did you take yours?

I bougtt the little shot bottles froma local hy-vee store in the wine and spirits depatment I bought Kinky vodaka and cherry vodaka. I am not a drinker either but the work. and the shot bottles are exactly a 1/4 cup so no need to messure.

Oh, that is a great idea. I went to a big box liquor store and bought a big bottle and the only flavored ones didn't list the carbs, and I was afraid they had sugar in there. I did see the Kinky vodka at the store. Does it have sugar in it?

margokittycat
margokittycat 2011-09-05 11:49:19 -0500 Report

It did not have anything oin the bottles of it. I just went by Jim's suggestion. I would have to say not much because a half hour after I drank it my BS had dropped 52 points and an hour later it had actually dropped 100. Yesterday bs were great all day until about 9 pm and I just did the one drink of vodka saturday evening at about 9:15 I had to run and get some because I did not have any I am not a big drinker. The Kinky is a passionfruit, mango Vodka it is really good but not really sweet tasting like some of the others.

Nope, that didn't work. I had a 411 around midnight!! OMG. I was shocked. So I drank a bunch of water and got it down in the 200's. What a boo boo. I am not sure what happened. I am just so backwards sometimes.

margokittycat 2011-09-06 12:07:57 -0500 Report

Sorry to hear that did not work for you. I don't know if it works different on everyone or not. When I tried it at the recommendation of Jim it worked great for me. But we all know everone is different and what works for one person does not work for some others. Water though is a great way to flush the extra sugars out of your system. I posted a while back that 32 oz of ice water every hour and check the BS every hour works well the other day though it was not working for me. Maybe mine went down because I was already loaded up on water and then the shot of vodka helped it out who knows.

I'm not done experimenting yet. I will try again. I always try to do things for at least a week. The day before it went up 10 points only and I thought it might be the lime juice and truvia I put in it. Yesterday was a pretty low carb day for me. Lots of salads and veggies with protein. So I am not sure what happened, but I have it logged down so I can see what happens tonight.

The doctor just said keep checking them, use your sliding scale and increase th regular shots 2 units every two days same thing she said on the 23rd when I went in. I am looking for a new doctor tuesday.

Look for s new doctor - bG that high should be worked on while it is high - not testing to find out where it is. Also alcahol is not good for Diabetics. It changes to sugar quicker than any other form of carbohydrates. Check the side of the bottle for the carb and sugars. The sugars have to be under 10 and carbs lower than 26. Most alcahol is hogher and causes spikes in your bG. at least it does in my case.

I am sorry about your setback. I hope you get well soon. There could be some correlation with the spider bite since that is when your problem began. I will keep you in my prayers.

I too am very afraid for you. I think the problem lies in the health system. Your doctor probably doesn't think the bite is a factor. I wonder if anyone has even done any medical research in this and similar matters.

Okay this may sound stupid but how old is your testing supplies, like the meter? I had a major spike the other night and it was for no reason that was apparant to me. I'm not on meds or insulin for my diabetes, so I can't really give any explanation. I'm so sorry you are going through this. It really does suck. Have you called doctors or clinics or hospitals to get some info? I don't want you to end up in the hospital. Please stay on top of it and keep us posted on your progress. I'm thinking of you.

Why do these crises always seem to fall on a weekend? Please do not wait to see your doctor if the high blood sugars continue or you could wind up hospitalized with DKA (Diabetic Ketoacidosis). Are you spilling ketones?

margokittycat
margokittycat 2011-09-02 15:59:26 -0500 Report

No, I am not spilling ketones. I think I could still have infection from my spider bite, but when I went to the doctor today the doctor said highly unlikely. Kinda wierd all this started after I got bitten. My husband has noticed that I have red splotches on my skin I asked the doctor about that to she said what red splotches are you kidding me. I am looking for a new doctor on tuesday but sounds like I will be making a trip to ER or URGENT CARE tonight. This is rediculous.

I know that when my numbers were that high I ended up at the ER being dehydrated. I also had alot of stress in my life at the time which I contribute to making my sugars go up AND I had an infection. Definitely call the doctor and make them aware. Hope you feel better soon :)

Is there a possibility that your insulin is spoiled or not working well? I have to agree with alan, if numbers like that continue, I would say an ER visit might be in order. They will work to get you down and maybe find out why you are running so high.

margokittycat
margokittycat 2011-09-02 08:46:18 -0500 Report

I just picked my insulin up from the pharmacy last week. The exp. dates on the vials are good and my insulin is not cloudy, so I would not think it would be spoiled.

Was just at doctor last week my original doctor who seen me after the bite was recieved put me on an antibiotic and said if bs was not down by the begining of the week to come back in and then the office was closed because the doctor took a job at another office. I was finally able to get in with a new doctor last week. She checked everything, complete blood work up and everything came back fine. She has me adjusting my doses every two days as needed. And I go back on the 23rd of this month.

I'm no expert that's for sure. However, I took one year of nurses training and worked in the lab for years in my early twenties. 432 is nothing to play around with. I am so sorry you are having to deal with this, but especially considering the holiday weekend, please don't wait until you are in crisis. Please get help NOW before crisis occurs. I know you don't know me and I am new to the community, but I have seen things turn bad quickly with patients and I don't want to see anything happen to you. Please listen to all your friends who have gently encouraged you to GO NOW! Blessings and Prayers!

As a "retired" nurse…I refrain from giving medical advice…but you need to get to your Doctor NOW. If not the Doctor, the ER At least call , but don't wait. Sometimes fasting is the wrong thing to do. Seek medical attention if your numbers are still up sweetheart, and let us know how you are doing.

the er will give you insulin and fluid. you need to hydrate to pee out that sugar. exercise can also help. maybe 2 units a day isn't enough. how much are you on? are you drawing up and injecting correctly? Alternating injection sites? Glucerna has too much glucose. Food is a better option.
