I am going through menapause and am having a horrible time with hot flashes and weight gain. Is anyone here going through the same and are you on HRT or how are you dealing with it?

Thanks for any help!!!!

I am having the same problems and my doctor told me to take Black Cohosh. I get it at Walmart for $4 and it seems to help. Good luck and HUGS

Hi I've been going thru it for over 8 yrs. I had to have an emergency hysterectomy, everythingremoved, went straight into menapause. I take wild yam root, it's a life saver, no more hot flashes I get mine fom puritans pride good quality inexpensive. I take 5 a day.

Thanks everyone for the advice (and sympathy!). I did call the dr. and have an appointment on 9/16. I haven't had a period for several years but she just did the bloodwork in May and said that I was in full blown menapause. I thought I could just tough it through, but I am still gaining weight even though I am living on carrots. And with 115 deg weather in Oklahoma this summer, it is killing me! I just laugh at the air conditioner when it comes on. Oh well, this too shall pass (I hope!).

I hope you get the advice you need. It certainly is no fun going threw menopause. You have gotten good advice here also. It is always nice to ask other women who have gone down the same road. I hope you feel better soon.

Almost 6 years ago I had to have a hysterectomy (my uterus was falling out). I started gaining weight during my recovery time. I thought as soon as I was back preparing my own meals and exercising I'd lose it. But alas! I couldn't be more wrong. I continued to gain for over a year. I was diagnosed with diabetes 2 years ago and dispite a good diet and daily exercise I have yet to lose any weight.
I do have lots of hot flashes and night sweats but because of a blood issue I can't use HRT. So between menopause and diabetes I am having more fun than I can stand!!! B

I am 46, going to be 47 in Dec., and I have not experienced that yet. I hope your condition improves soon. I have heard so many good things and done much research on Bio-identical hormones. That is probably what I will go on later. I am still having periods, every month, they used to be 28 days like clock work years ago, but starting in my late 30s it was 27, 26, 25, and sometimes now 24 or 23 days. The first two days I have noticed the last few yrs are much heavier. I know I should get that checked out. I can't wait until they stop completely. no sign of that yet. I have had the horrible mood swings. I have also had trouble falling asleep and other times staying asleep long enough. I plan to get my hormones checked as soon as I can. Let us know what works as this is a subject of much interest to me, since it is right around the corner for me I'm sure. I am interested in natural things, not drugs.

Welcome to the land of "Boy this really sucks!" I went through it a while ago and lived to talk about it, and no, wasn't the most fun I ever had! Mostly it was wet :) I couldn't take HRT due to breast cancer running in my family big time, so I toughed it out and learned to take changes of clothes with me to work! My staff used to recognize a hot flash before I had it, by my beet red face and someone would say "Sonya go walk", so there I was, trudging around the outside of the hotel, round and round dripping sweat until the hot flash passed! Exercise does help with the hot flashes, I found, but not with the embarrassment! And you get used to night sweats, I could change my nightie without even opening my eyes!
I tried really hard to maintain my sense of humor, and found that helped too-ya know, if men had to go through this, they would throw in the wet clammy towel in a day or two! We just march on. Just think-you can carry a smaller purse now-no Kotex!!
There are many natural things out there you can take if you don't want HRT yet, like Evening Primrose, and Black Cohash, and the side effects of these are minimal, if at all, and they do help. Ask your doctor what she thinks.
And remember, the worst will pass and you'll have some minor hot flashes and night sweats will lessen, although they do remain as Brenda says, long enough to bug you when you least expect it!

Yes, I have talked to my dr. She told me to just give her a call when I couldn't stand it anymore. She said that she has no problem giving me hrt. Thankfully I don't have any history of breast cancer in my family, so maybe I can try something. Thanks for your answer. Good to know I'm not alone!! =-)
