A label is something we affix to the outside of a product which lists the contents. It helps us to know the calories, fat, carbs and so on.
A label is also something that we call another person. Kind of a way to know how to deal with them. A lot of people like to place harsh labels on folks so that they can keep them in their place. After all "everyone knows" that all fat people are stupid, right? "Everyone knows" that all type 2 diabetics caused their own disease, right? "Everyone knows" that all men are alike, isn't that so? "Everyone knows" that all gay people are child molesters, right? "Everyone knows" that all women are gold diggers, right? "Everyone knows" …really? Seriously? I try to avoid putting a label on another human being and let them reveal themselves to me. Most of the time I have pretty good success with this method. However, it does mean that there is very little balck and white in my little world. Mostly there are shades of gray. I find that if I just get to know a person they will most likely reveal themselves to me all I have to do is just watch them…:o)

I do not like lables on people. And I don't care if someone tells me something about someone and tells me you don't want anything to do with them, I make my own mind up, I will go to them introduce myself get to know them and see what happens. What's that old saying God gave. Do unto others as you would want others to do unto you.

That's the way I feel too! I love not being like everyone else. As my mom used to say..I don't run on the same track as everyone else does. That was always a compliment. I like to think that is the reason my sweet husband and I are together now too. Neither one of us runs on the same track as everyone else…:o)

First of all, labeling people is demeaning and hurtful. However I often smile when I think of my son's comment that there would be no stereotypes if people didn't do stereotypical things. i am glad for the diversity of people in our world.

It is truly demeaning and hurtful. How boring would it be if we were all just alike? I love diversity!

Great points! I believe many people base their "labels" of others on stereotypes rather than taking the time to recognize the uniqueness of a person. Each age, race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, etc has its own labels that are simply not true for everyone. I think of my friendships as the flowers in a garden with their own colors, sizes and quirks. What a beautiful garden it is!

I love your analogy of the flowers in the garden. A garden would be pretty dull if it had only one kind of flower.
I am forever reading bumper stickers and my favorite one is…God bless everyone, no exceptions! I also like…A mind is like a parachute, it only functions when open.
