This morning before my walk my fasting bs was 187. I drank a homemade protein shake with soy milk, melon, pnut butter, protein powder and about 3 squirts of honey. I took a 2 mile walk, then took a shower. my bs after that was 285!! My question is, isn't my bs supposed to drop during exercise? And what can I do differently?

I ride a stationery bike in the morning before work. Sometimes that raises my blood sugars, but in the middle of the morning I will all of a sudden drop more than usual. Maybe it just takes a while for you to feel the benefits.

I agree with realsis. Also, if I don't actually challenge myself on my walks (walk fast/ruin + walk) it has no impact on my blood sugars. Can depend on how many carbs were in that shake too! I would eat a small snack before walking/workouts. See what works for you but I need a serving of protein (usually nuts or cheese & a carb that is no more than 20 carbs-motts berry or peach applesauce or piece of fruit).

Hi. Yes my bs does drop after exercise. But I think the shake had some things in it that raise blood sugar such as honey and peanut butter and even certain melons! I think that's probably what happened. Everyone is different but I know if I drank that shake id go through the roof with my blood sugar. I think the shake just might have been what caused the spike. Good luck and God bless!

I wouldn't have had the shake. Everyone's body is different. After I walk, I wait an hour before testing.

Gwen, I know it sounds kind of funny but most people when their BS are over 170 spill ketones in thier urine, most doctors say that if you are spilling keytones not to exercise until your BS is normal and there is no sign of keytones spilling. Keytones is sugar in your urine and exercise can make you spill more with an out of norrmal range BS. The honey and melon probably did not help as melon is and honey are natural sugars or as some may say high carbs. I would talk to my doctor and ask them if there are any rules they want you to follow when BS ae high and you want to exercise.

actually, ketones are not sugar. Here is what Joslin diabetes center has to say about Ketones:

"Ketones are produced when the body burns fat for energy or fuel. They are also produced when you lose weight or if there is not enough insulin to help your body use sugar for energy. Without enough insulin, glucose builds up in the blood. Since the body is unable to use glucose for energy, it breaks down fat instead. When this occurs, ketones form in the blood and spill into the urine. These ketones can make you very sick. "

Here's the rest of the article: http://www.joslin.org/info/ketone_testing_wha...

yes that is correct but they are sugars that break down into fat. If you are running keytones and it show that is why it makes you so sick, because they are in actuality sugars. I am going to print this article and read it. I have not done anthing with keytones in years other than test for them when sick or not feeling well for long periods of time. When I was diagnosised over 30 years ago and took my one week class that was from 8-5 mon-Fri. that is how the doctors back then explained the keytones, so I am very intrested in reading this article. Thanks for the link.

You should read the labels of your PB too. Can have lots of added sugars! Usually depends on brand & natural vs regular.

hi.. i was just thinking that your number would prolly (probably) be higher than that if u didnt exercise… as for me, when my number is higher before a meal, i would try to skip carb and eat just protein.. for example scrambled eggs with cheese since cheese has very little carb.. it works for me..
