Sadly, yes. My cat, Cocoa, was diagnosed diabetic in 1999, when she was twelve years old. The vet said injections would not work in her case, so we fed her special food. She lived for two more years, but developed kidney problems. Her kidneys began to shut down and of course, we had to put her to sleep. It was heart-breaking, and I still miss her and cry for her. She was our "baby".

Thank you, berrykins…my heart goes out to all of the people who responded who have lost beloved pets, whether to diabetes or not. I'm sure you love your hampster very much. I don't know if they get diabetes…I hope not!

I had a female bull dog named Sammy Jo and she was 10 yrs. old. She started going blind and we took her to the vet and discovered that she had diabetes. We had to start giving her shots. It was really too late though. She passed away a few days later. I was heart broken, she was a wonderful friend, I had her since she was 6 wks. old. She was very smart and spoiled rotten.

Yes, my sisters cat has diabetes, and she has to give him insulin everyday, and he is on special diabetic food from the vets. I can't imagine giving my cat insulin. I can do it to myself, but I would find it hard. They ended up testing him because she noticed he was drinking a lot of water, and urinating a lot.
