I have been struggling with my numbers for the past two weeks. I have learned sooo much since I joined diabetic connection. My numbers are still higher than I want them and I have to whole wheat everything, reading all my labels, etc. My question is: SHOULD I UP MY METFORMIN until my numbers come down even more? I take 500 mg twice a day, I wonder if I should take 1000 twice a day? Still confused but learning more and more. I was told also that diabetics should not use "Splenda" but use Trivia? To me Trivia does not sweeten my "tea" as well as Splenda. What are your thoughts on this??

Hi I personally could NOT take the pills. I ran 300 to 400 on them. All they did for me was give me an extreme headache! I now take insulin and run perfectly for the most part with out any side effects! Some people just can't take the pills. I couldn't. So if you continue to run high it might be time to consider other options. Insulin does NOT hurt and it is very easy to administer it has been a God send for me! I've never felt better than after I got on my insulin. I realize everyone is different but this is MY expirence. Insulin has been wonderful and has given me more energy than ever! The pills just did not work for me. They don't work for everyone. So if you continue to run high maybe consider your other options. You will be amazed on how much better you will feel once you get the correct medicine. I wish you the best!

Sometime it takes a while for one's BG numbers to come down. Please do not panic.

The question whether to up your Met is not something you ought to do on your own. You need to talk this over with your Dr. Doubling your dose seems like a bad idea anyway. You need to discuss it with Dr. Perhaps Doc will split the difference between doubling the dose and where it is currently, but that is something you and Doc should do TOGETHER. Don't change your dosages of any medicine unless Dr gives you permission. My Jem's dr trusted her to change doses when she felt she needed, but Dr knew Jem and that she would't change dosages radically. But that was after multiple years of working together on her "medical challenges".

Another variable in your numbers troubles may be either in the kinds of things you are eating/drinking or the amounts you are eating/drinking. Myself, I didn't really start to get good control of my BG numbers until I took breads out of my eating plan entirely. I just don't use bread at all any more.

I now eat a low carb high protein meal plan and I am managing my numbers in the normal range without the use of diabetes meds of any kind. My May A1c is 5.5. I have lost 50 lbs on that plan.

Regarding sweeteners I only drink water and almond milk now. And I don't drink coffee or tea, due to my trying to conserve as much kidney function as possible.

When I did use sweeteners, I found out I personally cannot handle much consumption of Splenda. It gave a "laxitive effect" if I consumed more than just trace amounts. I was a SweetNLow man in those days.

I had tried Truvia and it was OK but it didn't grab me. I bought a box to try on my Jem, but she couldn't stomach any alternative sweetener except WheyLow.

Prayers that you get your diabetes numbers controlled sooner rather than later

James, thanks sooo much!! I definitely get your drift about changing the meds! Will not do until I talk to my Dr. I am still working on the breads and carbs and meal portions. Thank you for sharing!!
