On this one I am going out on a limb for most of you. Sometimes we get so caught up in what our doctors are saying. They must be right…right? Not always. There are so many parts of medicine that they cannot know them all. So if your treatment is not working for you and you feel you have tried everything, why not try something out of the box?

Nutrition, supplements, and raw or vegetarian lifestyles have their advantages. I do not believe they are cures, but I do believe they hold a key to balanced health without additional pharmaceuticals in our bodies. There are many members here who can attest to that.

I found a webinar on this subject. It is touted as a cure, but just ignore that and see what they have to offer. It is just $18 and you can listen on your computer at home. Don't have to go anywhere. http://www.naturalhealth365.com/connealylive....

Chinese medicines. Have you ever considered acupuncture for your aches and pains or even internal issues? The body is an amazing thing and holds much more power than we often give it credit for. Or the natural healing of chroma therapy? There is a lot out there to look at and if you are not happy with where you are in your treatment plans, perhaps a look into something a bit out there might be in order.

Remember, there was a time when the medicine we use today was considered the "snake oil" of the times. I do believe we need a balance of both. Why not give it a try?

I have looked at some of the alternatives, too. Some of them I keep in the back of my mind and use them when it seems to "fit". One thing I have been doing is taking flax-seed oil in addition to the medication for high cholesterol . I can't take statins and the other meds didn't work good enough but when the Dr. suggested the flax seed oil, I figured why not. My cholesterol is now under the limits and I'm very happy. We just have to keep an open mind and research.

GabbyPA 2011-08-31 12:45:42 -0500 Report

How do you use the flax see oil? I can't take the statins either, and I take niacin, but would like some more help in that area.

Caliafiosgram62 2011-08-31 13:48:05 -0500 Report

I buy it in 500 mg capsules. I don't like the plain oil. I take two a day - one in the morning with breakfast and one with dinner. I get my cholesterol checked with the next bloodwork in November and I'm looking to see what one year does for me. When I first started, I had the test after three months and I was in the acceptable range - I'll be curious to see if it's gone down any more or if I'm evened off.

GabbyPA 2011-09-01 09:59:46 -0500 Report

I would like to know how that turns out to see if it is worth the addition of it. I have used flax seeds in my pilaf, but I know you really have to have the hulls removed to get the best benefit of the flax.

Caliafiosgram62 2011-09-01 17:37:04 -0500 Report

I'll let you know. My next Dr app't isn't until the middle of November - I'll have the bloodwork done before so I can get the results when I go.

hi gabby! what is chroma therapy??? Never heard of that. I have had accupuncture and massages from massage therapy. Also, another type of massage as well forget the name. They dont touch your body but use hands over the body. They all do something as well. Your so right when you said there are other things we can do.

GabbyPA 2011-08-26 11:15:37 -0500 Report

Chroma therapy is when they use crystals and lights to help. I have never done anything like that, but I have heard of it. Even jacuzzi tubs come with it in the lights now.

I too think we should have a combination of eastern and western medicine. I have hasd accupuncture and it has really helped. I tore the rotator cuff and they couldn't
repair it as the muscles had retracted. the pain was getting worse and my oncologist wanted me to see this Dr. for my neuropathy. He is Chineese and combines both east ans west. I can truthfully say it has helped. I will go back aws soon as this next trip is over. The pain is starting to come back so I know it will help. I also believe in chiropractic medicine. If your body is in alignment you have less aches and pains.

Hi everyone I meant to add a few things last night but I was to tired to go on.
Not just the eastern and western ways of medicine but what happened to the good old NATIVE AMERICAN ways,or our SOUTHERN WAYS come on my daughter just had a baby they wanted to give her something to stop her from producing milk because she was very sick at the time and didnt want to take the chance of passing it to her child.I told them do not give her anything I will take care of that myself. How ?they asked .By putting cabbage leaves around her breasts when she got home of course. They have a natural enzyme that stops the production of the milk. You cut it in half pop it in the freezer and take the leaves and tuck ,tuck, tuck, bing bang boom your done.

This works AWESOME. When I had both my kids 20 and 18 yrs., ago my mother had me use cabbage leaves, when I finally stopped nursing. I was not about to get a shot that could cause cancer !

many moons ago if you did not want to breastfeed you cut back on fluids and bound your chest with an ace or back then some type of bandage. and it worked.

Gabby…I would love to see our country combine the eastern and western medecines. I think it would help so much and don't believe our bodies need so many manufactured meds. Unfortunately, we also need to get our insurance companies to approve of using at least some of the alternative ways since it's difficulot to pay out of pocket for what would probably help as well as or better than our western ways. Thank you for your information. I'll look into the site you gave. Be good yourselves…lady

The more options the better. Our healthcare system is a mess. It took me 40 years to find a doctor to even listen and actually work with me. For years I have had to pretty much self diagnose. My previous doctor even told me not to use vitamin supplements. Not only does my current doctor prescribe meds and vitamins but he prescribed coffee for a condition that other doctors said not to because current studies showed that it helps. Keeping an open mind is usually a good idea. I had a friend that had a badly infected cut that doctors were unable to cure and an old lady put a poultice on it and it healed in two weeks.

ldraco 2011-08-23 17:54:02 -0500 Report

My dad discovered the benefits of vitamins & alternative practices when an aunt & uncle from California started actively encouraging him to try them. The meds his doctor put him on were causing numerous side effects; he would go to VA hospital & docs there would discontinue some of the meds. Return visits to his family doctor would result in being put back on all the usual pills - diabetes, gout & high blood pressure even though some of these problems were caused or made worse by the pills themselves.

It's true, there is very little emphasis on any sort of natural healing in our culture ( US). A balance would be a nice thing to strive for, though I feel there is far too little information out there about natural cures.

And yes, though medical science has advanced far the past few decades, doctors don't know everything. My dad still tells me stories of when doctors were on cigarette commercials talking about how smoking was healthy for you, and we all know how that turned out…

gabby, thank you for this link and your balanced way of thinking! i have studied "eastern" medicine very extensively and loved acupuncture (NOTHING works better for my asthma!) use homeopathic remedies, essential oils (they are not just for smelling), use cell-ready, liquid vitamins and minerals and try to eat and live holistically. unfortunately, i also have a very extensive history with "western" medicine…the electric stimulator for my gastroparesis was my 18 major surgery since 1995. i take so many meds that my pharmacy has to fill my medisets for me. but what it comes down to is that our bodies are wired, connected so that when one part of us is out of balance it affects the rest of us in one way or another. over the years i have slowly cut down on the number of medications and try to get to the root of a problem instead of just putting a bandaid on it. it's very frustrating to me that i am not able, primarily due to finances, to go the natural route all around. i so appreciate the link you gave and hope to use it next month. thanks again!

You are so right. Most people I talk to are not happy with their physicans. What a shame in this age of technology. I think like most things in this world its about the money. Alternative treatment is certainly giving many patients the oiption of controlling many diseases without harsh drugs that sometimes cause more harm than good. I liked what you have to say. I follow the advise of a Registered Pharm. who wrote a very good book. Her name is Susie Cohen. When it comes to foods and supliments, well what do we have to lose???? Nothing but numbers. Thanks again for a great spin on alternative

AuntieM234 2011-08-22 19:53:28 -0500 Report

Whether or not one believes in alternative medicine or witch doctors, I'm surprised that you were allowed out on this particular limb. Are you not employed by, and therefore a representative of Alliance Health? IMO you are treading dangerous waters when you suggest, even advocate a PWD turn away from convential medicine in favor of embracing the "sometimes … out there" world of alternative medicne.

GabbyPA 2011-08-24 10:50:33 -0500 Report

While I do work for the site, I am not employed in the traditional sense. That is one of the first things I asked them when I started "representing" them. How much do I have to change? They said I didn't, and just to be mindful. They chose to feature this discussion, so I guess they are not opposed to the suggestion.

Those who run the site are very open minded and really just want the best for us all around. It is not run by money here, at least as far as I can see. John and Amy are wonderful and the other advocates such as Sloan and Jeanette are often making suggestions that might be out of the comfort range of some. I think the goal here is to offer ideas and paths for people to chose. Kudos to all of them for that, it is what makes the site diverse and great.

AuntieM234 2011-08-25 06:58:32 -0500 Report

G: I never suggested this site is anything but a great place to be or that the other advocates are anything but great. I did question your suggestion of turning away from traditional medicine in favor of some "out there" solution, when we all know how important proper care is in fighting for our health/life. The fact that you decided to make it seem like an attack on this site further distresses me, as it so obviously was not. Since the very first day I came on this site, I've praised its worth to all those new members whom I've welcomed. Never once have I suggusted this site is about money. YOU are the one who brought that into the mix.

AuntieM234 2011-08-25 19:50:32 -0500 Report

G: Please read what I wrote again. I didn't say I feel you were attacking me. What I said was clearly not that. What I said was, "…you decided to make it seem like an attack on this site."

suziesgirl 2011-08-22 20:56:12 -0500 Report

A limb is sometimes what we need to be on sometimes. I never took the drugs and managed quite well. Doctors tend to fall way short these days on really helping patients with diabetes. I was never even offered a diet plan. I was given a script for Metformin and sent on my way. So very sad. A big bandaid I am glad I turned away from the traditional. When a doctor tells you, you have to take a Cholestrol medication and you get it way down with diet and exercise, Whos the witch doctor?. Do you have any idea what these drugs do to some patients. I do, I speak to patients all the time, aches, pains, headaches, and the list goes on. Now when they give you these drugs do they tell you what they rob from your natural body and how to combat that??? NO, NO, NO. They will given you some other drug to combat the effects of the previous. A new approach to traditional medicine. You bet, but the drug companies won't hand out a free cruise or TV to anyone who suggests you try an alternative method.

Dixiemom 2011-08-23 19:01:57 -0500 Report

I tend to nagree with you. After all, most Dr.'s are pushing way too many drugs. I njust had blood work done. My glucose was OK and don't need meds. My cholesterol was high and he did say if it was he would put me on Lipitor. Well, I'm not taking it and I dont plan on it. At least my dr. listens to what I say aand will go along with me . He doest push meds on me, but we were up front the first visit. Told him we take very little meds and he works with us.

suziesgirl 2011-08-23 19:41:39 -0500 Report

Sounds like a good idea. The Cholesterol Hype is getting a bit much. Did you know these kinds of drugs actually can increase insulin levels?? There are so many ways to lower Cholesterol with no drugs. Glad to hear your doctor is working with you. I fired the last doctor and found another who was not drug oriented. I have just heard about a doctor my friend at work is seeing that told her that the particals are more important than the numbers. Small particals vs large are the ones to watch out for. I was amazed that there is finally some heads changing. After all people are begining to be more educated and they are questioning their doctors. This is a good thing. Sometimes we read and research medical issues and new technology that our doctors don't have time to. Did you know walnuts will lower Cholesterol?? . Mine went from 284 to 176 in three months with no drugs. Read the book by Suzie Cohen. We need to be informed especially in this day and age.
Have a great day

AuntieM234 2011-08-22 21:17:30 -0500 Report

Well suziegirl, lumping all medical professionals in the same group isn't realistic. Unless and until you've seen them all, you can't know how many of them fall short. And, if you read what I said and understood it, you would know that I didn't advocate drugs. Neither did MoeGig, with whom I agreed. Its unfortunate that your experience with your Dr wasn't a good one, and I applaud your efforts to live healthy. I hope you are monitoring your BG regularly and continue to live healthy.

MoeGig 2011-08-22 18:55:14 -0500 Report

Thank you for your post…and appreciate the limb that you crawled out on; but, it doesn't apply to me, and I don't think it would apply to people who can maintain control utilizing conventional methods. It seems to me that this is a fairly simple disease…after 46 years as a Type 1, you only have to control one thing: your A1C. If you can keep it in the 6's, your odds of avoiding complications are pretty good…(it has been for me). If you don't, you are going to have a lot of painful, debilitating, costly issues. The treatment to accomplish this objective is to test often and maintain a low carb diet combined with moderate exercise. My impression is that relegating your success in this objective to Chinese Medicines, herbs and other natural medicines, is a manner of providing an excuse to do the "heavy lifting" needed to achieve the main objective…controlled A1C…:>) IMHO which may be all wrong.

GabbyPA 2011-08-24 10:55:19 -0500 Report

I do have to agree that this may apply more to type 2 than type 1. But any modifications in our lifestyles toward a healthy living should be commended by most. I know that is what I am working toward. I am not always so good at getting there. I am keeping my A1c in the 6 range, but I would like to improve more than that and be healthy in all aspects. I guess I let myself go for so long, that this sounds so good. Diabetes was a wake up call for me.

MoeGig 2011-08-24 16:37:12 -0500 Report

Gabby, I certainly agree that if you are following the basic plan to maintain your A1C in the 6's, then whatever else you do is a potential plus as you clearly describe. My comment related to people who get distracted from the basic objective, make excuses for their lack of control, and jump to other programs in the hope of fixing everything. It's like spending the night losing money in Vegas, and putting everything on "red" hoping to make it all back in one bet. We all know the results of that last hand…:>) But as you say, our goal should be beyond the basics, and try achieve a healthy living plan beyond. My problem is, I can't get beyond my immediate day to day goals.

GabbyPA 2011-08-24 20:03:02 -0500 Report

Well, the premise of it all was to think outside the box if traditional things are not working. If you have a plan that works, then stick with it. I have a plan that is working, but I want it to be better. I want to be better and I feel my doctor is limited in what he can offer. My health is my responsibility and I have to do what I can to make it better.

Hi yes my mother in law is an herbalist and she also balances peoples energey. Don't laugh it works! She uses different herbal drops taken under the tongue and "runs" energey through your body from hers. Balance of charaka. Don't laugh I was skeptical at first but I honestly felt better after it was done! Maybe its all in my mind I don't know but I tell you those herbs made me feel great! She can tell where you are unbalanced and she balances it. Its really amazing.like I said it could just be in my mind but what ever it was I felt wonderful after!

GabbyPA 2011-08-22 05:58:22 -0500 Report

I have used the charaka and rieki and they both have helped in different times of need. Those things are so often overlooked. No wonder our bodies are such a mess. We have forgotten how to listen to them. Maybe it is in our mind, but our minds are very powerful over our bodies. That too always has a negative connotation, that we should see as a positive.
