Hi all, I am suppose to go for jury duty tomorrow. I was wondering if I will be able to take my insulin and syringes with me. Here in cook county (chicago,IL)
they tend to confiscate anything that can be used as a weapon. I would hate to take my supplies with me and then have them taken from me. Please let me know if this ever happens to anyone before..

I just served a few months ago and there were no issues. It is up to us initially and then as the selection process takes place, it then becomes up to the lawyers as to whether they can deal with possible interruptions, but you don't have to tell them that you are diabetic. It is a lot based on your comfort. Many people went forward with notes or explanations about being diabetic and the judge let them choose mostly.

I strongly believe that it is our duty to do our job as a juror, and I did not ask to be excused, but then, I also don't tend to go low nor am I on insulin. So those issues are not there for me.

I recently served on a jury here in Houston and had no problems what-so-ever! I went to the summons, let them know my statis, and in the end I was seclected to be on the jury! Having water and snacks available to me were not a problem and for lunch (since trial lasted 3 days) they provided us with choices and so the whole experience was a great one for me! Instead of eliminating myself from this duty I took it to the judge and made her make the choice because too many people just want to "duck out" of jury duty for any reason and I for one feel that if they are willing and able to accomodate you, you should at least give it a go!?!?

Hello! Ive been called for jury duty 3 times and each time I called the number on the summons and explained my insulin dependency and meal schedule; they always said it was up to me if I wanted to serve and if not, to fax a note from my Dr. explaining why I should be excused.

Hi Rhonda,

Did you have a form to fill out aout eligibility? I know here in MO, my friend was allowed off of the jury because of her diabetes. She told them that she was on insulin, and she had to eat every four hours, etc. She was excused. You might call the judge's office, or the number on the information sheet they sent you, and ask them about your insulin, etc. It couldn't hurt. Good luck. Take care of you.
Lots of hugs and prayers,

I've never had to serve jury duty yet. As soon as they see that I'm diabetic and insulin dependent I always get excused. Guess they don't want to have to stop a trial so I can take care of myself!

When you filled out your form for jury duty did you put on there that you were diabetic and insulin dependant? I had to do it three years ago and I put on the form were it asked if it would be an inconvience for you that it was not, but I was and insulin dependant diabetic and had shots and snacks that had to be done and that I had to have water with me at all times they accepted me and I had to do it for 4 days. The Courts up here have never taken my supplies away from me. When we went to the courthouse 5 times in the laast three months for my daughters school permit and learners permitt the have you checked and check through purses and I had my diabetic id in my purse and they were fine with that.

On your summons to jury duty there should be a number to check in. You might call that number and ask that question, or ask if there is a number you can call to find that info out.

Seems to me that if they insisted on taking your meds and supplies away from you that it would be grounds for excusing you from jury duty. So, if they want you to serve, they'll let you keep your stuff. I was called for jury duty 18 months ago but all of the cases were either postponed or dismissed so we never actually got to serve. Had to show up though to find out it was a no-go. Good luck!
