Hi. I'm new here and have been looking for info but haven't found anything yet. My hubby is type 2, has been for about 6 years. He looses weight without trying which would be fine if he needed to loose. He's 5'8" and weighs 151. He weighed 153 a month ago. He sees the doc every 6 months, doc says loss is not significant, but I think it is because I know what he eats and he shouldn't be loosing based on that. He has lost 12 lbs. in the last 18 months. He takes metformin (2 500mg once daily) and pravachol (20 mg once daliy) for cholesterol. Sugar is between 90 and 140 most of the time depending on before and after eating, has gone up to 180 range occasionally but was explainable because of something he ate. Does anyone have any ideas what the problem could be? I wonder about the metformin dosage. Is 2 pills at one time a normal dosage? Can too many carbs cause a weight loss? Would appreciate any ideas. Thanks.

You might want to check (or have him check) his urine for ketones. Ketones are produced by the body when it uses muscle and fat to supply you with energy rather than properly metabolizing the sugar you eat. This will lead to weight loss no matter how much you eat. Usually, though, this would occur when BG levels are elevated for a good deal of the time…You can get ketone test strips at your pharmacy without a prescription. If he is producing ketones, notify your doctor immediately.

My type 2 is controlled with diet and exercise, but over a year ago, i went through a scary period of time, where I was losing weight and not trying. People would say, you are STILL losing weight? that was after only 2 or 3 lbs. lost and I did not notice it, they noticed before I did. I lost about 6 lbs. in two months. Not significant, but I was under a lot of stress! When the stress got better, I grdually gained most of it back. The doctor said if I had lost that much in one month, or more than that, she would be concerned. I remember I lessened my exercising, and tried to increase my calories, before going to the doctor and it was working. I hope it is something not serious at all.

Thanks for the input. You have all given me some ideas about what to talk to the Dr. about. When hubby was first diagnosed he was 185 lbs., lost 20 and maintained for about 5 years. Then the loss started. It's slow but still worrisome. I appreciate the comments.

Hi, I was doing the same. They found out diabetes was making me look like a skeleton. That's when I started taking insulin. Hope you have good luck.

outrigger1945 2011-08-12 09:03:53 -0500 Report

not realy. What I wanted to know what test they did on you. With me they did blood test T3 and T4 but I know there are other test and my Dr. refuses to do them telling me they are to expensive. I pay for them not him. What gives him the right to say no. It was ok that for the last 2 years they ordered e-rays and test that were in the thousend because they came up with it it was ok just don't challeng them.

sorry about the miss understanding of your question you asked earlier on here .this is the test they ran on me .they did upscan takes pictures of thyriod i had this done in junethat determinedi have graves diease on one side of of my thyriod.then just yesterday i had a ultrasound done everything looked good. nothing was wrong.ultrasound is for to see if you have enlarged thyriod and if you nodules which are like cancer but are benign which means it's not cancer.they aren't going to destroy my thyriod cause it isn't over active alot. unless it gets worse graves diesase and that means the tsh is will become alot lower than it shouldbe. mine right now is 0.30. normal is 0.35 to 4.50 my t3 t4 are in normal range.2.8 t3 1.1t4.

Not on subject berry, but I had graves and my thyroid was removed because of it. The best place I found on the internet for support and information is at thyroid.about.com … if you haven't been there yet, check it out. Gal that runs it is a thyroid person herself

Usually unexplained weight loss is a symptom of diabetes that is not controlled. So I am not sure what is happening.

Never let the doctor tell you what is insignificant. The doctor told my mom that my dad (who was also loosing weight unexplained, but had been in control of his diabetes) that he had a cold. It turned out to be much worse, and that is not to say that your husband is suffering the same thing, but I would suggest some additional screening. For my dad, it ended up being cancer.

So if you are concerned, get a second opinion. You know your body better than anyone.

One of my Dr. did thyroid test T3 and T4 told me everything is ok. Went to I diabetis specialist was told he want do an other thyroid test because they are to expensive and a waist of time. He wanted to know where I got info on other test. I told him other Dr. didn't care. I send him a letter telling I pay for this test and I pay for healthinsurance what give him the right to say no. See if he will call me back. I am changing from Presbyterian to Lovelace and hope to get better Dr. They are opening a brand new hospital in my town would like to find out about it but can't see waiting for 100 more ex-rays that show nothing and Dr. that don't listen. I am going true this since 2009 and 4 different Dr. and no answer last would put me over the edge. Thanks for your response.

I would not rule out oncology. Better to be safe than sorry in that regard.

outrigger1945 2011-08-13 09:08:18 -0500 Report

Thank you. I was going for a 2nd opinion to an other diabetid Dr. I am not from here. What does oncology mean and what do they test?

GabbyPA 2011-08-15 08:17:51 -0500 Report

The reason I brought that us is because that is what was wrong with my dad. The doctors kept telling my parents to not worry and that he had a cold. Until he was admitted to the hospital. Then we found out the truth, but it was too late.

outrigger1945 2011-08-15 08:25:47 -0500 Report

I am so sorry to hear about your da. That is what scares me with my Dr. They order 100 of terst can't find nothing but when I asked for a bloodtest this dr. had the nerve to tell me they were to expensive like he paud for them. He checked my thyroid with his hands and said the test we did were good enough and I am ok.

GabbyPA 2011-08-15 08:34:04 -0500 Report

It is time to change doctors. If they are doing tests and not finding things, then there is more to do. That is going to be a growing issue that we all will be facing once the Health Care law is taking place. These are the kinds of things that happen. You doctor may end up paying for it because it won't be covered by the insurance. Unless you are a self pay patient, the doctor chooses to do many things based on the insurance being willing to reimburse. It is a shame.

This is the first time I saw this Dr. Diabetis specialist. I just send him a letter telling him he is not paying for my test and this was no reason not to do the tests I askd for. My gastronalogist send me to UNM after a year of testing because she didn't know what else to do with me. UNm dr. same specialy found more test to take but his first response was get regular and I had no problem there. After 4 more test his answer IBS. Now he called back and has 2 more tests. I am done. First Dr. did bloodtest I askd for liver enzymes high askd for MRI can't do so we did ultrasound for liver and bile. Like I said when they order it get's done and cheap. Changing from Presbyterian to Lovelace next year. There answer after that was go to the Mayo clinic. I am in NM and can't go to AZ my husband can't be left alone. Dr. at UNM said Mayo clinic want find anything he has not found. I am sick of this Dr. and no answers. Have a new Dr. Internist maybe she will help cross my fingers.

Have you considered a holistic doctor? Perhaps they can find something that the general medical field doesn't bother to look for?

outrigger1945 2011-08-18 05:59:25 -0500 Report

Yes I have. I just don't know if my healthinsurance with Presbyterian wouldcover one and I can't afford one on my own. Living on SocialSecurity

GabbyPA 2011-08-18 08:27:27 -0500 Report

I know, that is the hardest part of it. Affording it at all. I want to see an Acupuncture doctor as well, but just cannot afford it. I know she will be worth the visit, because she spends time with you to try to get some resolution, no matter how long that takes. That is what is so different from our traditional medical system now. 15 minutes, a few questions and off you go.

outrigger1945 2011-08-18 12:46:09 -0500 Report

You right ist coast me $50.00 for Acupunture but I want to go back. I was on a web side the other day they where talking about alienment of your back which this Dr, says would take care of a lot of problems with your body so I don't know which way to turn

GabbyPA 2011-08-22 06:21:14 -0500 Report

I find a mix of both is a good plan. One will tend to discredit the other, but I think there is a place for both in our lives. Too bad insurance companies don't think so. But again, it is the lack of insurance that allows the alternative medicines to spend time with you and talk to you like a real person instead of a dollar amount.

alanbossman 2011-08-10 21:18:09 -0500 Report

iI don't any problem with the meds i take 2x a day 1000mg of metformin. Also to many carbs does not cause a weight loss. Lower carbs will cause a weight lost. And 12 lbs weight lost in 18 months should not be a concern. In 6 months time I lost 40 lbs from eating the right foods and portion size meals. He should check with his doctor to make sure everything is okay.
