How do you all keep stress from messing up your BS #s. For about the past 5 or 6 weeks this source of stress was not around. Found out today that it's back tomorrow. I feel like a selfish little (ok not so little) bitch! I've been crying on and off since I found out this afternoon.
So when anyone here finds themselves with a lot of stress what do you do to keep it from affecting your BS.

I sit quietly physically. Then I focus on a small thing I like or anything I notice in front of me, controlled breathing. Be patient try it more than once for more than a minute at a time. I lowered my blood pressure using this technique without meds. Everyone gets stressed, don't feed it, let go of it when you can. If you focus on your negative feelings no matter how justified it will hurt you physically and mentally.

I am glad you brought this up, because I could use some pointers as well. I have had some success lately I believe due to the fact the kids and I are in Family counseling and my faith. I agree that how you look at the challenging situations in your day to day life, makes a big difference in the amount of stress you feel. The biggest help I have gotten out of counseling is, give your self a break when you need it. It is absolutely ok to say I need a moment, which I usually use to pray and breathe and ask God for guidance. My counselor also reminded me to be aware of my self talk at these moments, not to allow myself to add to my stress by beating myself up for being a human and needing a moment, keep it positive. Is there any way to eliminate the source of the stress you mentioned completely, or would that be adding a different kind of stress? I don't know if my comments help, but my prayers and positive thoughts are with you.

Hi Cookie,

This is a really interesting question that you ask. You are probably familiar with the standard ways to relieve stress, including relaxation techniques, meditaiton, talking to a friend, enjoying a favorite activity, praying, and others.

Stress can also be the result of the way that you view the daily challenges that come your way. Human beings want to have control, but some things in life are more controllable than others. Learning how to let go of the need to control can result in less stress.

I posted a discusson on this topic awhile back. Here is the link:

Getting enough support is really important, Having someone to vent to, who can listen withoug judging you, can be a great way to relieve stress. A few sessions with a counselor can also go a long way.

I hope this helps. Stay in touch with us!

You can not do anything to keep stress from affecting your BS #'s, what you can do is try and relieve the stress you have, I do many different things. Reading in a quite place no one else around, walking, yoga but the biggest is just talking to gad and laying everything out, he will always be there fore you and he will help you in times of need, faith in GOD is a big thing in my life.

I too meditate or more me accurately for me, pray. Like Teresa Rose, my faith keeps me strong. I also volunteer in our church's food pantry. Working with my clients is a joy beyond compare and also reminds me that there are some things that are worse than diabetes. Take a break each day and do something that centers you and remember to play too.

Sweetie, trust in yourself too, and take things one day at a time. Oh, and a little bit of dark chocolate doesn't hurt :)
Stress does raise your BS levels, sometimes alot. I know, mine are high and I am stressed most of the time lately.
Teresa is right, prayer is good, meditating is good, anything that calms you is helpful. Maybe even sitting quietly in your favorite chair and listening to some music could help, and let your mind drift away to a peaceful place, either somewhere you have happy memories of, or somewhere you would like to go sometime.
Most of all, take care of yourself first and the rest will eventually fall into place.

I have been going through alot of different things in my life that are causing me alot of stress. The only thing that has ever helped me is my faith in God. I have no choice but to trust him. I have come to the realization that life happens and the only thing that we can do is deal with it every day and trust God to bring us through it. If I were to tell you the things that have happened to me in my life you would be amazed at the things that God has brought me through. I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes on May 13,2011 so I don't know how stress affects BG levels. Friends & family can be a great help during those time when stress is high. Don't be afraid to talk to someone about your feelings, its a great stress reducer. - Bless you Dear Friend!!! - Teresa Rose
