How long will it take to get sugar levels to acceptable range?

I am sitting in for my friend that was diagnosed only a week ago with Type 2. She had a level of over 500, spent the night in the hospital, was given medication to take and the whole 9 yards. She still can't get enough energy up to exercise long enough to knock the extra sugars out of her system. We go on walks at least once a day (if she can muster up the "git-up-n-go"). She is wanting to know how long it is supposed to take to get her blood sugar levels down to an acceptable range. She has started changing her diet, checking levels several times a day, taking medication, getting up and around when she can. So far the levels have went from the over 500 down to roughly 338 in the morning fasting, to 388 about 2 hours after meals, to about 360 or so before bed and meds. Any help is so greatly appreciated. Thank you all for all the feedback. Its been great help. My friend just told me this morning that after changing diet (carbs, sodium, and such) that with her meds along with it she is now down to 151 and up to 165 on the high. Her energy level is still a little bit down but she keeps working hard everyday. Thanks so much

What everyone has posted is correct. For me, and I am very insulin resistant, it has been nearly eliminating carbs, but that is me. Change to 100% whole wheat, brown rice, wheat pasta. and then in very small portions. 40-60 carbs for each meal, I've had best results at 10-20, but again that's me. Increase protein amounts and if one eats meat ( I don't), eat mostly fish & chicken. Also high fiber in diet. Due to back injury I can't exercise, but just walking a block and building from there helps. And take your meds at the same time as possible, I had better results. Good luck!

I have been type 1 for over thirty years. I know it is hard because with bs readings like that you don't have energy, but she needs to push herself to go exercise. The exercise along with good diet not to many carbs and medications will work. It takes a while for the medications to start getting in your system and building up and your body to realize there is something there to help it. And because it is pills she is taking they take longer and then the docotor has to check how everything is and if he thinks they are not the right medications for her to be on change them or up the doseage. It will take a while. Tell her to be strong hold on and help herself by forcing the exercise, she will find she is really tired after the first few times but the exercise will help the meds in herr body do their jobs and help her fill better.

It depends on what readings you are talking about. The HbA1c test gives you a reading of your average blood sugar over the past 3 months. You get more immediate results with individual meter readings. Medication alone will generally not do it. It must be combined by a change in eating habits and exercise for your friend. Although she's seen some progress, unless she's seriously looking at how many carbs she's ingesting and cutting back on them, she's not helping herself. 300+ is still way too high. Ask her how many carbs she is eating and when. Every individual with diabetes has to find the right balance…there is no one right answer. I try to limit my carbs to 30 grams at breakfast and no more than 45 grams each for lunch and for dinner. It's not an easy diet but it works for me. I test with my meter from 4 to 6 times a day. A friend and I have started walking 4 times a week doing 2 to 3 miles in 40 to 50 minutes. I've noticed a significant drop in BG levels after the walks. Keep encouraging your friend. She's lucky to have such a supportive ally in her struggle to deal with this disease.

After I was diagnosed and started taking my meds I think it took 2 to 3 weeks for them to start going down, some people might take less time and others might take more time. I guess it depends on how your system reacts to the meds. Exercise is good to help get the numbers down as well. Your friend being in the 500 range might take longer for them to get down into an acceptable range.

A lot does depend on the determination of the patient to be sure. I dropped about 125 points pretty consistently but it took me a long time, as I was doing it with just diet and exercise. I was proud of that drop, but it was not enough and I was put on meds. Those help more, but I still can struggle with my numbers at times.

I will say, exercise is her best friend and even a little will help a lot. So keep that up and keep it going. As she starts to have more energy, she will want to exercise more and it is a good cycle to be in.

Have patience. It will come down. Some people is it almost immediate, some it is much longer. Everyone is different, but as long as the trend is to go down, then rejoice in that.
