At my doctor's appt the other day he asked if I was still having the sugar free bread. He suggested I try Rye bread because 1 slice is the lowest in carbs he has found. Has anyone tried it. I had a morning blood sugar of 150 and then took meds and insulin. For breakfast I had 2 eggs and 1 piece of rye toast and 2 hours later my b/s was 126. That is great for me. I usually am alot higher than that after eating. So I just wondered if someone has tried this.

I have heard that pumpernickel, rye and sourdough are all good for low carb diets.

Rye because of the amount of fiber, sourdough because the acids used in the dough have the effect of lowering blood sugar, and I'm not sure why the pumpernickel is good, the articles I've read didn't seem to pinpoint a specific reason for it.

It's all good to me because all three are my favorite kinds of bread!

I've watched my blood sugars carefully after eating rye bread and sourdough and I did notice there wasn't much of a spike, if any at all. Keep in mind, I limited myself to one slice each time. I suppose like anything, if you eat gobs of it, your sugar levels will rise!

It's that dang "gob" of things that get us all in trouble. LOL

Protion is one of the overlooked keys, that is so true. That is why somethings are easier for me to just not eat, because once I start...stop me!! LOL It is a bother, and I hope I will get a handle on it soon. Some things I am okay with, but pasta is my nemisis.

I have heard this also. Does pumpernickle do the same thing? I like the richer breads, but most of the family doesn't, so I just don't eat it and they get what they like. I do the low carb wraps, they are friendly to me.

There is also Ezikiel bread that is made without flour and that is what my mom eats a lot. She likes it, I don't. But I have only tried one kind, it comes in a lot of different varities.

If i eat bread, rye is the only kind I eat. I don't have it to often. I really don't see much spike in my BG with it. I usually keep my carbs low throughout the day though…Debe
