I just happened upon this article, it was very interesting as I always thought of syrup as being a no-no for diabetics.

Here is the article : http://www.naturalnews.com/031957_maple_syrup...

I have heard this about natural honey, the type you get from a good hive and a reputable beekeeper. I do enjoy honey on toast occasionally, and don't see any adverse reaction to it. I use a good natural maple syrup with Splenda in it and really enjoy the flavor, much more then any other syrup on the market even the real stuff makes my teeth ache to taste it, let alone the so called maple-like or maple flavored junk. Too much sugar in the look a likes. I much prefer the real deal. Just like real butter in moderation in comparison to the flavored oils. Go with the real stuff! our bodies were designed to digest the real thing not the fake wannabes.

a good natural maple syrup won't NEED a sweetener of any kind. It will be sweet enough on its own. Kinda like taking that natural honey and adding a sweetener to that.

The sugar free syrup will have to do for me. I'm thinking of how high my glucose would go with real syrup and I'm not taking a chance. I love waffles, french toast and pancakes with sugar free syrup. m-m-m-m-m-m-m- is right.

As has been stated here before, it is better to do your own research than to believe all that you read. Here is what the Science Codex has to say. Although the benefits seem to be there, more research needs to be done. They are looking into ways to extract the beneficial compounds to help those with diseases like cancer and diabetes. They are not recommending the use of pure maple syrup as a way to aid diabetics. Also, the research was done on a small amount of northern Canadian maple syrup and the tests on more need to be done to see if it is prevalent in all species of the sap.

What a bunch of junk. Just because something contains things that may be good for you it doesn't mean that the substance as a whole is good for you. Maybe maple syrup does contain things that help diabetics but that doesn't change the fact that the sugar in it will potentially cause more damage than the good stuff will help.

I absolutely do not believe this…and I'm a 1st generation American born with 100% French Canadian heritage. Whenever my BS drops low (60 or less) I eat one Eggo waffle with a small amount of pure maple syrup on it…within 3 hours, I'm over 160. Sounds like it was written by the Quebecois marketing department…:>)

NH here :) Love the real stuff! Also will use no salad dressing except Maple Grove Balsamic Vinegarette. It is relatively ok for me and so damn delicious!

Has anyone thought of trying a spoon of it along with regular non-dairy creamer in their coffee? It tastes like Souther pecan flavored creamer.

I find that Maple Grove Farms in Vermont makes a Fantastical Sugar Free Maple Syrup that looks ,.tastes and smells like the real Syrup and it also has a nice thick texture that doesn't run all over the place like the fake syrups do ,.,.

Thanks for giving us a suggestion for alternatives. But, I'll stick with the real thing as I can't have the sugar-free things.

Just when I thought I would have to give up on everything good here is this article. Thanks re1ndeer. Does anyone have a healthy recipe for pancakes?

re1ndeer 2011-07-16 14:06:29 -0500 Report

You don't just have to have it with pancakes, you can have it with frozen vanilla yogurt, or vanilla ice cream, or soy ice cream. Thanks for replying.

50Jewels 2011-07-16 14:33:00 -0500 Report

Really, I can have frozen yogurt!!!!

2011-07-16 18:44:40 -0500 Report

If you can have frozen yogurt, as long as you stay w/in your carb count, what about the sugar? It raises mine considerably.

2011-07-16 13:21:44 -0500 Report

If it's true, then I guess I'll go w/out. Cause it's only goes w/pancakes, and I don't eat pancakes anymore. Way to many carbs. I won't even eat s/f syrup any more. So whatever the article says, then I'll take it as a bogus read. Cause I've always have said this: "once a diabetic, will always be a diabetic". There's no magical remedy to "cure" this disease. It use to be like luggage. U kept it for life. Now U don't even keep that for life.

grandmaducky 2011-07-19 12:46:31 -0500 Report

carbolite makes good pancakes and biscuits and other things its kind oh high priced but worth it but just like all things u can't have five just one or two small ones but it works for me

re1ndeer 2011-07-16 14:05:14 -0500 Report

Sorry , you don't eat maple syrup anymore. But, it is good on frozen yogurt or ice cream, not just pancakes and waffles. Thanks for replying.

I was raised in Upper Pa and Maple syrup is made everywhere. But guess what I dont like real maple syrup.Yes I know I'm nuts lol.Was using the store stuff but not now.Just go with out .

Gemm 2011-07-16 11:24:35 -0500 Report

wow - I absolutely LOVE real maple syrup. One of my older sisters and her husband used to make it every Spring and sometimes Mother and Daddy would take me over and we would help. I may just have to try some again and see how it works for me. I miss using it and also honey - been told honey is okay too but kind of afraid to try it too.

re1ndeer 2011-07-16 11:34:56 -0500 Report

Real Maple syrup is so much better than the bottle stuff you get in the stores. I use honey in my tea, I don't use alot as it will raise my sugars, but, once in awhile it doesn't hurt. Thanks for responding.

Marytea 2011-07-16 09:24:44 -0500 Report

I love maple syrup. Glad to hear it could be part of my diet. I don't suppose its benefits extend to maple sugar candy though. Oh, well, I can dream.
