Hey All you folks out there in D/C land~~ Gotta question for you all: Even though I've been a diabetic for 16yrs. I've never been able to tell when my b/s is extremely low. What are the symptoms, (other than taking my b/s reading) should I be looking out for? Can anyone out there in D/C land tell me? Thanx.

I am "borderline" diabetic…Dr says it's not bad enough for insulin or anything but i get tested regularly?!?!? But I have had really low bs and I get real shaky and have "cold" sweats, my stomach feels like it's rumbling and I feel like I'm going to be sick…I have gotten so bad that I passed out and had seizures…I think my Dr is crazy…but by the time i got to the hospital My mother had my sugar back up to normal so maybe I should go in with the low bs so my Dr will know what is going on?!?!? I just don't think he believes me cause I don't have a low reading when I go in!!!

That would be really tricky to pull off Ash. Has Dr Dx'd you with the borderline or pre diabetic diagnosis? If so I would think he believes you. Take care of YOU. don't "try to prove" anything to Doc.

BTW, how old are you?

I'm 21 but I had the seizures when i was 14-20 haven't had one this year praise GOD!! But he just acts like he don't want to diagnose me with diabetes even though the hospital told me that I am/ should be. I just don't know…Right now I am in the process of finding a new Dr. but it's hard to find one around here that will take my insurance.

Just PLEASE take care of YOU! Pre diabetes is a terrible thing to have. I don't know which is worse. I think the uncertainty of pre diabetes would have me all in knots.

I know it is real bad when I cannot continue to work on a task. When I begin to have trouble taking the action that my brain is telling me to take, I know I will go fast. first thing I do is look for somebody around me and let them know I am in trouble, or may be heading that way. Today a counselor here at camp provided me with a cold bottle of water and 2 peanut butter and cheese cracker packs. In 15 minutes I began to stabilize.

How interesting! I get low sugars while sleeping more than I'd like. I knew the night sweats were from my sugar dropping to low, but had no idea nightmares could be from that as well. Good to know.

My sugars sometimes go up when I sleep, even when I have had nothing to eat since 6PM! I think I must dream about chocolate and absorb the sugar through osmosis!

I get the shakes so bad I can't test, but reverse by popping a small hard candy. I find if my concentration is drifting and I don't feel tired, that is also a sign. Light headedness is usually related to my BP being low rather than my BS!

MrsCDogg 2011-07-13 05:30:07 -0500 Report

Personaly I get light headed, my vision gets "furry", I get shaky, start to sweat, and I get shall we say not so nice if it gets too low. The lowest mine has been so far is 38 which was kind of scary.

I get a headache, I start to shake a little, and I get to be very argumentative that is what happens to me

I just found out a few days ago,(when mine got low, & B4 the paramedics arrived) that you & I are in the same boat. I tend to get argumentative, as well.

when I wake up in the morning if I have a tremor in my knee when I stand up I know that my BS has gone below 4.0 mmol/L UK (68 mg/dl US) when I have tremors in my arm and hand it has gone to around 3.2 mmol/L UK (57.5 mg/dl US) and when it is in my shoulder its about 2.2 mmol/L UK (39.6 mg/dl US) but the tremors always occur on my right side. I used to panic thinking if I did not wake up I could go into a coma in my sleep and die. But my doctor said that would not happen as your body always gives you warning signs. You just have to listen to what it is saying and take action quick like glucose tabs (5) or some OJ. By tremors I mean the inside of my body at those points feels as if it is shaking. Some people have said they have felt light headed and dizzy as if they were about to pass out but I have never felt like that. Although I have often wondered what feeling would come next after my shoulders and I guess it must be that one as it starts from the bottom and works its way up and the higher it is the lower your BS. hope this helps.

My sympotoms vary, depending on how fast it's dropping. Below 70 I start to vibrate. When I feel like I'm going to be sick and my insides feel like hot coals, it's below 50. When I go blind, it's below 30. (The first time THAT happened it had fallen to 13.) I can usually tell that it's on its way down when I feel like - have you ever been on a plane when it hit an air pocket and plummeted? Like that.

Never experienced any of that but geezo 13 is a bit low my niece has diabetes 1 and is on insulin and she several years ago on Christmas day had 3 bacardi breezers and was found unconscious on the bathroom floor in the early hours of boxing day. Now she knows very welll she should not have been drinking as it lowers your BS but they gave her the hypogel from the fridge which did not bring her round and phoned the paramedics they came and gave her stuff and still no response so they put the sirens on and rushed her to hospital where they had to give her something different and just pulled her back from the brink of death. and her BS was 6

Does hunger set in? Even if you're not hungry? Excessive perspiration? Tiredness? Fatigue? Sorry to sound so stupid folks, but in the 16 yrs that Ive had T2, and have been in a low b/s state, I've never had any of the symptoms of low b/s.

MrsCDogg 2011-07-13 05:33:07 -0500 Report

There are some folks who just do not feel any symptoms of low blood sugar. There is a word for it but right now it escapes me.

My symptoms vary. Often I will feel cold and trembly inside. Sometimes I will suddenly get depressed, maybe really hungry, tired, like I might faint. There can be 1 or more of the symptoms. Sometimes there is no indication at all, then I feel surprised by the BG reading.
