First I want to thank everyone for making this "newbie" feel so welcome…and for your wonderful advise, especially the advise about my very high fasting BG#'s in the morning. Right before I got to bed at night I check my BG which is fairly low around 99…so I eat some graham crackers with peanut butter on it before I got to bed and my BG numbers have been great all week…ranging from 99 - 105! I guess my levels must drop really hard at night and I get that dump of sugar…Thank you..Thank you!! Starting out the day with fairly normal BG #'s helps me keep it in check for the entire day…

Now for another question…Just curious because I can't seem to find it anywhere…as a rule, what would be the amount of carbs that one should consume in one day…or is it dependant on age, sex and weight?

Helene

I'm glad you got your fasting levels where you want them — congratulations!
The amount of carbs does depend on your activity level and your weight or weight goal. If you know how many calories you should consume each day, for example lets say 1200 calories a day, 50% of your calories should from carbs. Since there are 4 calories per carb you would need 150 grams per day to make 600 calories. Then, you spread those carbs out evenly in your meals and snacks, maybe 30 breakfast, 15 morning snack, 45 lunch, 15 afternoon snack, 30 dinner, 15 bedtime snack. This is just a starting point. If your numbers are too high, you may need to reduce carbs or increase exercise. If they are too low, you may need to increase carbs. And it's a moving target as things change in your life. Make sense? Good luck!

Right helene0763 on the left of this page you will see a list of categories click on VIDEOS, then on the top right of the next page just below "add a video" you will see an oblong box type in 'carb counting' and click the green X. A list of videos will appear in the middle of the screen under the heading RELEVANCY choose the video entitled MY LIFE AS A PIN CUSHION-CARB COUNTING

As a general rule it is usually between 45 and 60 carbs per meal. I was told by my dr 45gr of carbs per meal, but i cant eat that much i have to stay in the 30gr range. For breakfast i find i can have only 10gr of carbs so I eat eggs 1carb per and bacon 0 carbs no toast or im through the roof. I find this way of eating pretty easy yes there are those days when I want and have tried a cheeseburger but that didnt work well for me I was at 175 two hours after. Its not very hard to count carbs just look on the back of the box or get a carb counter. Hope this helps

175 really is not that bad. My Dr is happy if I can keep it under 200. Try 15 grain bread. It helped me and I like it. I'm not one for white bread. I'm 50 and not very active do to my Legs.
