I have a question regarding my use of Novalog. According to the instructions it says not to take it unless you're going to eat within the next ten minutes. I can handle that just fine. My question is this: for the past week I've been very sick with some kind of stomach flu and I've not been able to keep any food down at all. In fact most days I don't eat anything at all. Yesterday I had a cup of chicken broth and two small glasses of diet Sprite and I did good to keep that down. So, on the days like this when I can't eat should I still take my novalog at the scheduled times? Even though I'm not eating my sugar levels are still running high like around 160 to 190 and I'm wondering if it because I've not been taking the novalog.

When I get sick I sliding scale it based on what my sugars do for me when I get sick. That way I always take it, but take less to adjust for the lack of incoming carbs/food. I have horrible trouble with nausea and throwing up easily, so I discovered quickly that jello water (not the sugar free), a little juice and sprite, etc. helps a lot. And sugar tabs on hand in case I overshoot.. I can usually keep those down even when I feel really gross..

Of late I've been eating one meal a day and I asked the doc what do I do when my BG goes high. I was told to inject half of what I would for a meal, this has helped me a great deal. But before you try this, talk to your doc!

Crazylady58; By all means you never miss your novalog injection. That is whats making your sugar levels keep running so high. They tell me to try to eat crackers or some dry toast anything, just so you can take your meds!!!!!!!! Your Friend, "Shoulders" Cynthia

I didn't realize this and had a bug. By day 3 I ended up in ER severely dehydrated and received numerous lectures on how important it is to notify soca when diabetic. Be careful.

When my body is fighting an infection (like a bad cold or flu) I find I need to take more insulin. Do you test before each Novolog shot? If I am not eating, and my sugars are above 120, I would take 1 unit for each 50 over 120. You may want to consult with your doctor to find out what is right for you and start out with a low dose, then test one and two hours later to see how that works. It's tricky when you're not eating or can't keep food down. This is a good question you've posed.

thank you for your advice, I have an appointment with my doc. next Tuesday, I'll be sure to "try" to remember to ask her about it.

may I make a suggestion re remembering to ask? Type up your list of what you want to ask in the word processor of choice and on the day of appointment print out 2 copies, 1 for you, then 1 for Dr. I do that and hand the Dr copy to the nurse or aide who does your BP to include in your medical folder so Dr can look at it before s/he comes in. That way Dr can do research if needed.

I have found it helpful to me, and it gives the Dr the impression you are organized.

great suggestion! I will have to start doing that. First I have to get my printer up and running. Just moved into a new apartment and haven't found the cords for my printer yet. Have a bad feeling I left them behind and will have to try to find new ones. But that is beside the point. I love your suggestion and will be sure to use it. I forget way to easy these days.
