Absolutely…I have tested it and enjoy eating it especially considering I maintain a low carb diet. It marginally affects my BG which I monitor very closely.

Taken from dlife.com 25 lowest carb fruits..

Watermelon is #2. In 1/2 cup diced watermelon it contains 5.5 grams of carbs. It contains vitamin a &c, beta-carotene and lycopene which has been shown to reduce the risk of several forms of cancer. It also contains citrulline, which our bodies need to create arginine, an amino acid that has been shown to increase insulin sensitivity.

I also tried watermelon for the first time since becoming diabetic yesterday with my lunch.. I had about 5 cubes and it didn't do anything to my blood sugars. I probably wouldn't eat more than that.. a few pieces satisfies me.

The only way you can know FOR SURE if watermelon is a good choice for YOUR body is to test a serving of watermelon.

You do that by taking a blood glucose ("BG") reading before you eat the watermelon (your "baseline" reading. Then you eat 1Cup of watermelon (see Teresa Rose's post below) and then 2 hrs after you took your 1st bite of watermelon, you do another BG test. If that BG reading is more than 50 points above your baseline reading then you may want to do the same test later with only a half cup of melon. If it is many points over 50 points it would be best to avoid it altogether.

I sympathize, I'm in the same heat. I usually don't have more than a bite of watermelon, it doesn't really satisfy me for as many carbs as it uses up, and I can't really eat it by itself. I'm more likely to have pear slices with goat cheese, or tomato and cucumbers with feta cheese and fresh basil, and a bit of olive oil; or maybe blueberries and/or strawberries with a spoonful of vanilla yogurt for something light and refreshing. Oh yeah, and lots of water.

I find if I have a couple of strawberries, about 5 Blackberries, and a couple of very small balls of watermelon I am ok. I eat theme with my fingers because for some reason it just feels like it is a treat and more satisfying. Silly I know. lol

I can't have it by itself, it does the same thing to me, but if I'm at a church pot luck or somewhere having a whole meal, I can add just a couple of pieces okay. There always seems to be someone who brings a watermelon to the summer potlucks. Do you take your walks very early or very late? Or do you have a nice, shaded route to walk?

Well I really wish I had known that yesterday before I fixed that fruit salad we had for supper, oh well, I'll just have to watch out and not eat much of it. Thanks Ms. Rose, and everyone else.

1 cup of watermelon is 11-16 Carbs. In my food plan from my dietician watermelon, cantaloupe, & honeydew melon are not a free carb. Cantaloupe & honeydew melon are the same in carbs as watermelon. You can have it, just not to much of it.

true. I thought when I was diagnosed that I had to give up cantaloupe and watermelon two of my favorites, but realized later I didn't. that is about what I eat, one cup I just make sure I have something with fiber too with it
