Snacking is not right for everyone who has diabetes but some people, especially those that go more than 4-5 hrs between meals, snacks have a place on the menu. The trick is to choose healthy munchies.
Head back to the produce dept for pre-sliced, pre-washed carrot sticks. With all their fiber they can fill you up quick with very few calories.
Look for low-fat mozzarella sticks…this is low in carbs/moderate in fats.
Buy single serving boxes of raisins..makes sure you stick to small portion.
Go to nuts in moderation-almonds are good source of Vitamin E that may protect against kidney damage/eye and nerve complications.
Choose low-fat, whole grain crackers. Make sure they do not contain trans fats.
Buy granola bars, but choose carefully- easy to carry for emergency food.
Buy 100 calorie snack packs - these are portioned just right.
Skip fat free cookies -usually more sugar is added.
Skip sugar free ice cream, instead choose frozen yogart.

Why skip sugar free ice cream?

Many diabetics are also lactose intolerant. If you are one of the lucky ones who aren't, you are still getting a lot of saturated fat in ice cream.

Sugar free products frequently contain chemicals in place of sugar and some have a higher carbohydrate count than the regular versions. So if you do, be sure to read labels and don't chose a sugar free product that actually is worse for you than the regular one.

You have to read the whole label. I use to look at the carb count but now I look at everything.

Do you have any good smootie recipes that you know are tasty? I thought MewElla's ideas for snacks sound really good. I am always looking for good snacks that will not effect my sores up or down. Sometimes I just have a piece of fruit but that effects my scores.

Thanks for the tips on picking out the right snacks..New to this & I find it hard to find the correct snack foods. This will be very helpful in my next trip to the grocery store..

You are soooo right about "fat free" foods! Every one I've checked ALWAYS has extra sugar added to make up for the lost of flavor that comes from taking the fat out.

As always Mewella you rock with your wondrous advice but you can also make your own 100 calorie snack bags by following serving sizes on packages or measuring. The only thing I buy 100 calorie snack are nuts. But we need all the advice we can on saving money.

The problem I have with making my own sometimes, is the portion control issue. It so easy to cheat in making your own! Just being honest! But it does cost less to buy in bulk!

Great ideas Mary! But instead of carrots I prefer celery sticks much more. Carrots do have a higher glycemic signature than celery does. That's why I prefer celery. ( you can even use the stings to floss your teeth! J/K) Of course carrots are still far better than potato chips, to be sure.
