I test first thing in the AM and after every meal. This allows me to control how much meds I have to take. I am prescribed metformine , 5 tablets 3 times a day, after meals as needed. My doctor said not to take it if my BS was already low, only if it spiked too high.
For about a week now my levels are doing good enough that I only have to take 1 tablet after each meal ( breakfast, dinner, and supper), And of course the only way to know what your levels are is to test.
I test twice a day. The strips are to expensive to test anymore than that.
I think the right answer is…it depends. If I am home and on my diet/routine and wake up with a good first test, then a couple more times during the day is plenty (always one before bed so I don't go low overnight). If I am out traveling than maybe one or two more times to check and correct.
You are missing out on opportunities to correct high bg readings, determine/eliminate diabetes is the reason you are feeling bad or different, and help to keep A1c scores in line. Personally I want to know what that food I ate at lunch did to me because I gave into my cravings this time. Or, just to have better control.
my doctor to me i didn't need to cause my numbers were to much the same.after breakfast and before supper. my ac1has been at 5.6 sept2009 to april 2011 1yr 8 months.it was checked in between there of course. and my ac1 checked in april 2011 and is now ac1 5.4. i was take 2 tablets of metforin from june 2009 to 2010 june. i do take 1 tablet of metforin a day.for the last year.
I am still testing 5 to 7 times a day
Better to keep my #'s right on
Best wishes
Harlen
I test at least once a day to give me an idea of how to handle my menu for the day. On the weekends I test twice because my routine changes and I eat more. It works and I know when I am bad- I do not need a strip to tell that when I shovel a cup of rice or a cookie. :D
Are you sure you're a type 1?!!
I was initially testing twice a day, then when I decided about a year ago I didn't want to be a diabetic anymore - I stopped. Now I'm on Novolog and I go through test strips like candy.
I am testing as much as 6 times a day right now because of a change in insulin and the doc is trying to figure it out. fasting BS in morning, optional 10AM test, lunch, optional, but usually necessary 2PM test, dinner test, then bedtime. Glad I use my arm instead of my fingers! As long as your BS isn't all over the board, twice a day seems reasonable.
I test 3 x a day, more if I am tired, stressed, sick, or if I just feel a little off when I try a different food. I like to stay in tight control of #'s so if anything is up or down I can get it corrected pretty quickly.
I;ve tested my BS 4-6 times day. Had diabetes over 38 yrs. now. You do get
use to it and it doesn't bother me. Someday I can't get any blood out of my
fingers then get very frustrated about that. Take one day at a time.

RK, try testing your blood just below your elbow. I do maintenance work and due to chemicals and the like cannot use my fingers. Jim
Thank you for the tip but my meter doesn't have dadget to test on arm, I have
what Medtronic Insulin Pump give me… I'll have to ask my new Doctor next wk.
Nice to meet you Jim
Thanks,
RainbowKathy
I use the One Touch Ultra (and a few others) and I can test anywhere with them. The one you use, does it have something to fit over the finfer? My "stabber" is about 3" long by about 3/4". The needle comes out where the pen point would be. You pull back on the trigger, then press the release. I may be heading toward the insulin pump. We will see. Stay healthy
I know I do better when I test. Mine has been really good lately compared to what it had been. This website has done wonders for me… Thanks for the information.
You're more welcome. I'm a new kid on the block. LOL. Nice to meet you.

Before every meal, for me, and every morning before I eat, and every evening before bed. So, that's about 4-5 times a day.
I only test 2 times a day.
It all depends on your personal situation. I try to test as close to 10 times a day as possible but I am a terrible eater so I have to double check that my carb and bolus calculations are correct. Some people have set food they eat, and set hours they do things and so their routine is so fixed that 2 times a day works for them. www.thediabeticcamper.blogspot.com
sounds like me set food and set hours i eat.my mother thinks i'm kinda weird the way i do .things ha ha.it does make sense what your saying i never thought of that way.
