Hi, I have been on metformin for some years now. In intensive care, they took me off of it due to problem with my kidney. Now instead of 1000, I take 500. I take it in the morning after eating something. Now I only get it by the month, due to the fact I have to give blood every month and my doctor had to check it before I am giving the ok to take it for the next month. I like taking it more than the other ones. That just me!

I take it 3 times a day, those 3 times are all after a meal. This is what my doctor told me to do, and it is on my script label. My Dr has changed my script to match my needs. So I just suggest staying in touch with your Dr in case he needs to adjust your script or your testing times.

As DIABETEIC148 says it has to be taken with food as it irritates the lining of your stomach. I take 3x850. One right after breakfast, one mid afternoon and one in the evening but that was what was prescribed by my doctor. Have read discussions before where people have stopped their meds because the thought they no longer needed them, but I would not recommend that until you speak with your doctor first, so it really depends on your dosage and how many you take daily. Even a few mouthfuls of food are enough before you take it.

You only take it with food IF you have nausea by taking it on an empty stomach. But it works better taken on an empty stomach. I work at the UAB School of Nursing and the Nurse Practitioners here agree.

Thank you for that information. I have always taken one after breakfast and one after dinner. I will try taking the later one before bed, instead of right after dinner and see if that helps. My fasting blood sugar has been in the 170's lately and have been trying to get it down. I do pretty well for most of the day, but the late night hungers pangs are the hardest to deal with. Tonight had a little bowl of raspberries with a little dollop of whipped cream, that was good and figured better than low sugar ice cream..

Good choice! I take a mid-afternoon appetite suppressant because I have the same problem. At night, I've been told to eat an apple or some kind of fruit instead of carbs.
Tell your doctor about how high your fasting blood sugar is. Mine is now down to 102-104 and that's because the doctor now has me on Glipizide with the Metformin. I did not know such a cheap drug as Glipizide ($4 at WalMart) would do the trick. One morning it was at 88!! I was shocked because never before had I seen it that low.

wow, that is great! Don't think I've been below 144 in a long time. This morning it did drop down to 158 (from 174 yesterday), probably partly due to exercising for over an hour yesterday at gym, but need to get it lower. The type of Metformin I am on is called GLYB/Metformin 5/500. Is that the same thing as Glipizide? Or is it a separate med that you take in addition to Metformin? If it is not the same as what I am taking, I will definately ask him about it on my next visit, which is soon. My med is $29.30 at Target, for 120 tablets, so I wonder if they are different meds? Also, good idea about taking the mid-afternoon appetite suppressant, I still have a bottle of them from when I used to be on Medi a few years ago, will try it. I am really curious if your med and mine are the same or not, that may make a real difference for me, too.

trishw 2011-06-23 08:24:31 -0500 Report

I am on Metformin 500 as well twice a day (morning and evening), so the Glipizide is an additional med that works well together with Metformin, and it's only in the mornings. Ask your doctor about it. Also, the meds are MUCH cheaper at WalMart instead of Target. 120 tablets at WalMart is only $12.00.

Hi Trish, i to am on 1,000 mg of Metformin and also glipizide. I have been taking my meds at night right before bedtime for about 2 to 3 years now. I see were you stated it is to be taken in the morning. Is this what your Doctor said or did you research and find this out ? I ask cause with me taking them at bedtime, it could be why my numbers are a bit to high. So would you recommend i continue doing what i have been doing, or start taking them in the morning? I really appreciate your feedback, thank you so much :)

trishw 2011-07-01 09:13:49 -0500 Report

I don't know the answer to this question. I also am on 1,000 mg of Metformin, but they are in 500 mg ea tablets that the doctor told me to take twice a day, once in the morning with glipizide and once at night. The Glipizide is only once a day.
If your numbers are too high, then I would talk to your doctor about something different. Avandaryl worked really well for me too.
Since you've been on this regimen for 2-3 years, I would recommend changing your meds to something more potent, and/or getting a new doctor if he/she is not trying to bring your numbers down.
My blood sugar numbers hover at 100 most of the time. This is where we all should be, or even lower. (but not below 80)

Wow, that is a big price difference! Thanks so much for the info on Glipizide, I have written it down so I don't forget the name of it when I go for my next appt. Is there a certain dosage you take or does it only come in one dosage? I hope to try it soon and see if it can help make my b/s levels a little lower. Thanks again, you've been very helpful and informative.

trishw 2011-06-23 08:46:31 -0500 Report

Glipizide comes in multiple dosages. I am on a lower dose and it WORKS great! The first day, my numbers came down to NORMAL!! I was so shocked. I am on 6.25 mg.

cottoncandybaby 2011-06-23 17:01:12 -0500 Report

Thanks, Trish, at least I can go to my dr. armed with a little information on it and see what he says about trying it. So glad it has worked well for you! At this point, I'd be happy to have my numbers below 150! Also, will try Wal-Mart for my b/s meds, and my Synthroid, too. Thanks again…Amy

Yes, I can attest that I have taken it at any time of day and reap good results. However, the BEST times are early morning and before bed on an empty stomach.

Mollydolittle 2011-06-21 19:45:51 -0500 Report

I take 500m metformin with a 10m glipizide at bedtime. This works for me most of the tme. Originally I was taking the metformin twice a day , but when I am working this dosage is too much and I have low blood sugar ( sometimes down to 50). So, the amount of energy you expend affects the amount of medication you take. However, when there is a big family occasion coming up and I know I will overeatk , then I take the metformin with a meal.

When I was taking two it was 1 with breaand 1 at supper. Now I am only taking 1, the Dr. told me if I had a higher carb meal than normal could take a 2nd one with it.

neisey 2011-06-21 08:08:32 -0500 Report

I also take Metformin but i don't take it with food as i take mine before bed every night. I have been taking it this way for about 2 to 3 years and have had no problems. I never knew you were suposed to take it with food so thank you for letting me know. I was suposed to take 1 in the a.m. and 1 in the p.m. however i kept forgetting my morning meds and i was just taking my nightly meds before bed. Well they checked my A1C level and it came back great, so the doctor told me to continue taking them however i was cause it seemed to be working. So now i take a 1.000 mg pill each night before bed.
