My mother smoked almost 50 years and had a second brain aneurysm years ago , then the doctor said she had to quit and she did. My father (who died now 23 years ago from lung cancer) quit about 12 years before he developed lung cancer, as a child I was so proud of him, he had just stopped cold turkey. He had emphysema by that time. My mother in law quit cold turkey many years ago and never went back either. I know so many who have done it, some with help, some not. I know it is very very hard.

Congrats!! I know you can do it! I wish my 20 year old son would try. he doesn't want to at all, isn't interested. I just keep watching him smoke many cigarettes (not around me, I can't stand the smoke and don't allow it in the house) and i just can't help knowing what he is doing to himself.

SOOOO glad you are still doing well!!!!!!!!!! KEEP IT UP!!!!

I quit a bunch of times and a few years ago I woke up one day and tried to smoke a cigarette and threw up. I tried to smoke (cause I'm hard headed) the next couple days and the same thing kept happening. I just all the sudden couldn't stand it. It was the craziest thing!!!!!!!! BEST thing you can do for yourself!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wonderful for you!!! My husband and I quit smoking together 12 yrs ago and we know it isn't easy, but so glad we did. Keep up the good work because it's worth it. You're doing one of the best things for yourself and your family. Many blessings to you.

Wow. What determination and perseverance. I am guessing you quit cold turkey. I am only at the point of knowing I have to quit, but I can't find the motivation and strength to go for it. I wish I had your strength

Man, pat yourself on the back! Been down with some pain issues but decided to get on here and see how you were doing. Have you come to the point when you want to apologise to the world for contributing to the stink? LOL. You do not realise how rank it smelled until you quit. Hang in and don't give into the just one puff temptation.

Harlen 2011-06-18 19:13:59 -0500 Report

No I am not .lol
I never smoked in my house and car so the smell wasnt so bad lol .I would pat myself on the back if I was able to reach it lol

Harlen way to go! I quit in 1975 cold turkey and haven't puffed since. I did it in my third year in the military when all my buddies still smoked. You've climbed the summit, now it's down hill. Hang in there and go for 30 days.

Soooo Sooooo Proud of you. I have been on Chantix for 6 Days now. It has helped me quit in the past. Reading your story has helped me realize I am not the only one. I also believe now: I CAN'T be a social smoker. Everytime I have quit in the past is because I thought I could have just one or just one puff. A little time passes my and wammo back at it! I also realized your mind tricks you and the lack of nicotine does some really weird things to make you think you need/want a cigarette. Become an Ex has really helped me too! Let's keep this discussion going and help support all!!!!!!! We are on our way!

Way to go Harlen! I never smoked but my Mom was a smoker. She smoked for 55 yrs, from the time she was 15 til she was 60. then she quit. I know how hard it was for her, so I know it's been hard for you. Keep fighting the good fight.

scribbles 2011-06-16 17:02:39 -0500 Report

I've made it over 2 years now without a smoke and if I can - you can. The first few weeks I carried a small baggie of carrot sticks, just one or two sticks. Never used them. The main thing is that YOU CAN DO THIS!

It seems to me that people who are ultimately successful at it are those who decide that they really don't have a choice, that they have to quit and that they have to decide to be a non-smoker for life. I really admire your determination. I watch many go through this process, and I know it iis one of the hardest things to do. I am sure that you are inspiring a lot of other people. Gary

Hey, Harlen
Good for you, my friend! That's great! I couldn't be happer for you!
Take it from someone who used to smoke nearly 3 packs a day. You definitely do not need them and you will get through this. Promise!
The way I stopped was this. I went to see a friend who had been operated on for cancer of the throat from smoking. He had a hole in his throat and was hooked up to this horrible machine. After seeing that, I came out with resolve to quit and did and was free and have been free from that nasty habit for about 30 years now. I just made up my mind then and there that I wasn't going to wind up like poor Tom did. Do you know that when Tom came home from the hospital, he tried smoking through the hole in his throat. He was dead in 2-3 weeks. It was so sad.
Hang in there, my friend. You'll make it! I know you will.

Bravo, Buddy!!! It is a very difficult habit to break so I commend you for doing it. It truly is a life-changing event and I had never felt so "free" as when I didn't have to lug my cigarettes, lighter and ashtray around with me. There are people who go years without smoking but that still crave them, knowing that just one puff is all it takes to get back into it. Don't try to prove to yourself that your addiction is over (like I have unsuccessfully) because it's not even that one cigarette but rather that one puff that's all is takes. I figured that after weeks without a cigarette that I wanted to show I was over it and took a puff of a cigarette, thinking I would choke and gag. That wasn't the case. It brought me right back to having a whole cigarette, then another, then another. Like with alcoholics fighting cigarettes is a lifelong battle. It is a battle you can win. Stay away from smokers (not to be a nag to them though … ex smokers are irritating) but hang out in places that don't allow smoking like library, grocery stores, etc. At least you get free air conditioning. :) The reality of cigarette addictions is, like alcohol, that it's one day at a time!!! You're doing great!!!

Harlen 2011-06-15 21:10:48 -0500 Report

Thank you
I know i will never have a puff I am a no-smoker and I will stay that way for the rest of my life no-matter how short that my be lol
It is hard I have done it before but never this long so I know how hard it is and I dont wish to go thru this again
Best wishes

You can do it. It is so difficult, but I am three years smoke free. It is really great Replace smoking with reading or a craft or walking is a great exercise. Reward yourself with something you want. If you make it a week, go out to eat. That would be treat for me or buy that pair of slacks that you have wanted. When you reward yourself with food, you have to be careful. Yoga and meditation are just wonderful and got me through the worst of my quitting.
