Controlling BGL on the Go

I was recently diagnosed as pre-diabetic so I am new at knowing what to do to help me control my condition.

I seem to run from place to place everyday. This last Thursday I ate breakfast at 5:45 am, went to work, had a snack (Greek Yogurt) at 10:30 am, had a chef's salad for lunch at 2:00. Then I went directly from work to my daughter's recital. It started at 6:30 pm and I had to work late so I didn't get to stop and eat prior to the show. It ended at 10:00 pm.By this time I was feeling light headed, tired and weak.

Does anyone have suggestions of what to do when this type of situation happens? What snacks can I carry in my purse that would prevent me from dropping too low?

I'm pre-diabetic also…I check my BG after breakfast and dinner; so far I'm doing good. Exercising and eating healthier.. Checking my BG enables me to know which foods cause my sugarto spike… If you can eat 4-5 small meals a day… Too much time lapsed between meals, that's why you were light-headed.

From my learning in college I remember reading about What do to prevent BS dropping when your on the run. They implied that you have to eat protein to keep your BS up. Suggested packaged crackers/peanut butter or crackers/cheese. They are easy to keep in your purse. Of course, if you do have a hypoglycemia episode you have to eat a hard piece of candy it will raise your BS but you HAVE TO follow up with protein like the crackers/peanut butter, etc. Mainly because the candy raises it big time but if bot followed with some protein sugar will drop real fast and you'll be worse off than when you started. In your CVS drug store they have diabetic energy bars for sale. I love idea of Of the seeds because they are protein and will sustain your BS. Don't wait for your BS to drop to eat for you can ward it off by eating as close the same times you usual do. Your snacks are so important. Stay away from snack bars that are loaded in sugar. Glucerna bars are great idea. I guess I have a personal vendetta for my older sister and only sibling died 12 years ago at age 54 from diabetes complications. I miss her dearly. So sorry for your loss. I am 51. My mom had diabetes and so far all of my siblings are either diabetic or pre-diabetic so no surprise I have it too. I just want to control it. Thanks for the information. I will find a CVS drug store and see if I can get some. I left (ran away) an abusive husband after 32 years last year and he is still holding my meter hostage so I need to get a new one.

When I don’t have time to eat a regular meal I will drink a low carb protein shake like Atkins or EAS. Both are low carb just 1-2 net carbs per serving and I found I can even drink them warn. I also carry 2-4 little plastic bottles that hold 1 serving of sunflower seeds or peanuts. If I get hungry I just eat one or two bottles of the seeds or peanuts. I use the small plastic bottles that they sell for keeping liquids when flying. They hold just one serving.

Thanks. Those are great ideas. I love sunflower seeds and the little bottles sound perfect for tucking into my purse.

Thanks for the suggestion. Does it matter what flavor of Luna bar you select or are most or with diabetes?

Most don't seem to raise my BG. My favorite is the caramel nut brownie. It has 27 grams carbs and 12 grams protein. The chocolate cherry almond has 21 grams carbs and 12 grams protein, it is more like a candy nougat. The mint chocolate is good also. I don't have one on hand now but I think it has about the same carbs and protein as the others.
I have tried the Target brand bars. Not sure if I like them as my sense of taste is still off from the sinus/cold/allergy thingy I'm still dealing with.
